It’s almost October again, which means it’s almost time for the return of Vivid Shadows! For any of you who don’t know, last year @JillTheSuccubus and I collaborated on a teratophilia-themed art book for the month of October. Now we’re bringing it back with new rules and new monsters!
We’re still nailing down how we want to do this, so I’m working on this as a test piece to start off. We’re going to be a bit more varied in our color selection, as you can see.

I’m working on some concepts for a new TF thing. I don’t have a name for it yet, so it’ll just be the Kaiju Project for now.
In the near future, earth is attacked by giant monsters called Kaiju. The UN assembles a division of mech pilots to combat them, but the Kaiju are too fast and vicious to fight effectively. In desperation, the pilots begin splicing themselves with animal DNA to improve their senses and reflexes.

This is definitely on the weirder side for me, hope at least some of you dig this. I wanted to lean into the horror side of things for this illustration, which I realize won’t be for everyone.

These are a handful of style studies I did on top of the lineart from my Hades-style Vara drawing. As an artist it’s important to break out of your comfort zone and experiment with your style now and then. One good way is to study artists you love, and steal bits and pieces from them until you come up with something new.

Gotta say, drawing multiple different characters on top of one another interacting and touching in a believable way is really hard. Especially when some of those characters feature the anatomy of a horse, nature’s hardest to draw animal. As usual Jill is saving my ass with artistic anatomy assistance.
