The Red Detective 5

The fumes haunted Dawn's brain like noxious ghosts. She dropped to the floor, barely noticing the shocking pain as her stocking clad knees slammed into the pavement, tiny bits of gravel, grit, and grime punishing the smooth delicate pink skin of her palms. Her mind was frantically trying to fight for cohesion just as it tried to grapple with the blame of her oblivious mistakes. It was a losing conflict.

"Dawn? Dawn!? DAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWNNN!!!" Danny's voice echoed with tinny urgency thro...

What would you like to see next?

Well now, July has been a busy month. We checked in on Emily's misadventures with a tribute series to "Emily Lockwood in New Beginnings." And even now we await the outcome of Dawn Meadows in The Red Detective.

But that doesn't mean it's not the perfect time to ask that age old question: What do you all want to see next? August heat means hot renders! So get to it and vote for what you're excited to see.

"Dawn? Dawn!? Are you there? Dawn!?"

"Shhh-shhh-shhh... easy there, Blondie. Nice and easy. That's it. Thaaaaaaat's it."

Dawn knew that she had stumbled upon something serious, something dangerous. The smell of gun powder fresh in the stale warehouse air, she called the only person she could think of. Danny Breslin.

"Danny? Danny? It's Dawn. Oh, God, Danny. It's awful! It's!---"

"Slow down, Dawn! What happened? Where are you?"

"Oh, Danny! I was following a lead, I was chasing a scoop... and... Danny..."

"Take a deep breath, Meadows. What the heck happened?"

"I stumbled upon a busin...

Oh, Dawn! What have you walked into!? A murder suicide??? What would drive this man to murder another, and then take his own life? And whose money is all this? Was this truly a business deal gone wrong? You've stumbled upon a real mystery here...

We join Dawn Meadows in the middle of a case investigation. A warehouse in New York City, a not so great part of town. A misunderstanding? A deal gone wrong? A double-cross? Dawn carefully tries to get her scoop.

Emily Lockwood - You Chose Wrong... Again?

Surely you didn't choose wrong again just to see more of this... right? Well, I guess that's why for every correct path on Emily's journey, there is a blunder waiting to happen!

This concludes my homage to Emily Lockwood in New Beginnings. I hope you all enjoyed it. Thank you!

Emily Lockwood - You Chose Wrong!

One of my favorite things about an Emily Lockwood CYOA is simply how dangerous they are. Even though we know that Emily eventually solves the case, we are treated to the 30+ ways she fails, and the consequences of that. It's the magic of the CYOA genre. Sure we all want to read the happy ending. But there is something intrinsic to the CYOA fabric where you secretly can't help the curiosity of all the bad endings too. It allows us to safely poke fun of the heroine for "being so foolish" or "wh...

Emily Lockwood - Drinking on the Job

Oh, Emily. Even though you are allowed to drink doesn't mean you should drink! When will you ever learn?

Emily's adventures can come to a premature end if she fails to conduct herself in a professional manner.

Emily Lockwood - Gambling Debts 2

Look on the bright side, Emily. It's not like this is the first time you've gone and gotten yourself sold. Remember that time in Istanbul when you let yourself get distracted during the shell game? Well, technically that was because you bet more than you had. What about that time when you tried rescuing your mother from the Auction in Shokinata City? Ah, right... that resulted in you both getting sold. Hmmmm... ah, but clearly you managed to get out of those situations, otherwise you wouldn't...

You might want to try a poker face next time, Emily. Being honest is not exactly always the best policy. Especially when it comes to you!

Good news? He's paying off those gambling debts you read about online before coming here. The bad news? He's using you as payment!

Emily Lockwood - Searching for Cassie Reynolds

No sooner does Emily Lockwood mysteriously return to her hometown of Greenfield, but so too investigates a mystery. Police give up searching for a missing girl? No sooner does Emily read the headline, then she is on the case. Here we see Emily beginning her inquiries, but be careful! Emily's adventures can come to an end even in the early pages of her story!

Emily Lockwood - Lake Chen

Everybody knows that when reading a Choose Your Own Adventure book, you have to keep your thumb on the previous page when making a selection. Oh well, looks like Emily got to the bottom of this mystery. No surprise, she's a dive right in sort of girl, after all!

Next time, Emily, beware crossing the likes of a crime boss like Ling Chen! Going up against a pro like her, amateur detectives have a way of sinking under the pressure...

Emily Lockwood - Defying Ling Chen

Emily Lockwood goes toe to (reinforced?) toe with the local organized crime that has set up shop in her quaint little hometown of Greenfield. It turns out that it takes more than a good pair of pantyhose to survive the encounter. Make sure Emily chooses carefully!

Emily Lockwood - Return to Greenfield 2

As a long time fan of the series, you can imagine how excited I was to have the story open with the long awaited return of Emily Lockwood to her hometown. To the place where it all began. And like any good mystery writer, MarkusJo makes sure to fuel that anticipation. Where has Emily been? Who is the culprit? And will we be able to put the clues together?

But all of that will need to wait. Night travel can be a drag. Emily needs a good night's sleep in a real bed, a warm meal, and a coo...

Emily Lockwood - Return to Greenfield

Emily Lockwood returns to Greenfield to investigate a mystery!

And thus begins my tribute series to "Emily Lockwood in New Beginnings" a CYOA written by MarkusJo. The renders will all be inspired by that story. I was a really big fan of it, and felt it got close to re-capturing the magic of "Deadly Horizons" and "A Detective Never Dies" from Season 2 of Emily's adventures. A good old fashioned missing persons detective story. And a bittersweet reminder that it's difficult to ...

Girl Detective Blues - Epilogue

When I created the Girl Detective Blues series, the box was only shown in the beginning (though ironically, the renders showing the box were actually the last ones I completed. I often create my stuff out of sequence). I never intended to reveal what was in the box, as I liked the idea of mystery and imagination. But so many people were curious, and it seemed only right that I return to the creative well. And thus, I created this add-on set of renders this week. I included a supersize variety...

What would you like to see next?

Well now, those River City Girls brawled their way through, a guest artist visited us, and Hanna Hoxley got stuck on her very first investigation. And even though there's a few more tag along renders before the end of the month, I figured, let's ask the fun question: What does everybody want to see next???

I tried to think of all the mistakes I might have made that led to this point. Left my purse by the door? Running in stocking feet? Snooping where I shouldn't belong? Not checking my surroundings first? Not changing into fresh tights? Spending more time making sure I had a cute outfit than studying the details of the case? It was all so overwhelming... I felt my head spinning and the inevitable tidal wave of sleep washing over me.

Dropping to my stocking clad knees I was distantly aware that they were going to bruise. Gotta be more careful when I'm running! This case is eluding me. I had it figured out a minute ago. I think I had it figured out? I remember finding... I found...??? I feel so heavy. All this investigating... Maybe I just need to... I think I left my purse by the door... I should probably... before...

Okay, Hannah. Think. Think, think, think. When you are caught sleuthing, the bad guy isn't very talkative, and he has a gun in your face... what's a girl detective to do?

RUN!!!

Okay, not very courageous. It was difficult to feel very brave running away in my stocking feet. But then again, it's difficult to feel brave doing anything in my stocking feet. Where the heck did I leave my shoes!?

And before you ask, Dawn Meadows is NO be...

"I have a very good explanation for all of this... if you wouldn't mind just maybe not pointing that gun in my face? It's really all just a simple misunderstanding. You see I go to school near here, and um, I got lost? And then I saw this place, and um, you know, I... gosh... curiosity has always gotten the better of me, so... I'll, um... just be, uhhh, going? If you would be so kind as to um, maybe just um, give me my purse, I'll ahhh, see my own way out? Or um, you can keep the purse! Yeah!...

Yep. It was the first time I had a gun pointed in my face. I'm a girl detective, not a mercenary! Yeah, tripped over my own feet. Can you blame me for being startled? I should have known better. I can't believe I left my purse by the door! Stupid, Hannah!

Just gotta figure out how to talk myself out of this one.

Hello, my name is Hannah Hoxley. I'm a student at the Ivy Ridge Academy for Girls. What's that? Yes, Dawn Meadows goes there as well. She's no big deal. Ahem... as I was saying, I'm Hannah Hoxley. Did I mention I was a girl detective?

Anyways, so there I was, on the case. Just another dusty mansion, home to yet another antique trunk. But what was inside was anything but routine. This mystery was about to turn out unlike any other in my short career! View Post

Trash Reporting!

Oh, Dawn! Just because those legs of yours can open doors, doesn't mean that you should go walking through them. What was your plan after you exposed corruption within City Hall? When you make enemies of the rich and powerful it takes more than the "sheer elegance" of a pair of L'Eggs pantyhose. You may have cracked this case like one of those nostalgic plastic eggs... but just like the cheap flimsy pairs, your story ended up in the trash. And you with it!

I Smell a Rat

Before we get to Hannah Hoxley's "Girl Detective Blues" our Guest Artist decided to drop by and inform us how Dawn Meadow's investigation is going. It turns out the phrase "I smell a rat" is not just a saying in the movies. Maybe she should agonized a little less over the denier of her pantyhose and a little more over her cover story. Then again, the rats don't seem to mind... Oh, Dawn... when are you ever going to learn?

River City Girls - Misako & Kyoko 2

Anybody who has ever played a brawler knows what it's like when you accidentally catch your partner with a stray elbow. That leads to a not so accidental punch, kick, and a throw. Next thing you know, you've completely forgotten about the bad guys, and the only thing louder than your yelling match on the couch is the blinking chime of the fallen character sprite for whichever one of you lost the sudden grudge match.

Plus, this is Riko we're talking about. Did you really think t...

River City Girls - Misako & Kyoko

Uh oh, did someone hit "start" on controller two? It looks like Emily Lockwood will be putting the "plural" in River City Girls. The best part of every beat-em-up game is the co-op element and RCG is no different. Kyoko (as cosplayed by the ever helpful Emily) is the sweet naive alternative to Misako's more aggressive can-do grrrl.

Playing as these two girls trying to rescue their kidnapped boyfriends is a hilarious romp well worth the couch co-op with a buddy.
