Brawler

Our quest to create the ultimate punch boy led us to this, the fisticuffs fighter subclass polished to perfection for Valda's Spire of Secrets.

College of Masks

The College of Masks is a direct callback to the 3.5 Complete Scoundrel prestige class, Master of Masks, which afforded a character the ability to create masks which offered minute benefits and the ability to swap them easily. The subclass presented below takes that mechanic and merges it with the spirit of the 3.5 Factotum class, which gave a character a limited use of some of the defining characteristics of the core classes – like a Class Feature sampler, if you will. As such, there’s a...

Blood on the Lens - Version 1.0

In a brief lull before the release of the revised Player’s Handbook, I designed an entire 270-page TTRPG. (Half-sized pages, but still!)

In Blood on the Lens, you play characters in an unfolding horror movie. And when you take damage, you tear parts off your character sheet. You must survive whatever supernatural threat is on the prowl, investigate it, and perhaps even defeat it. Not everyone will make it out alive; nobody will make it out unscathed.

College of Romance

A charming archetype for bard we wrote in 2016 and updated for Valda’s Spire of Secrets.

Enchantment Isn’t Love
Spellcasters of all stripes possess magic which can influence the heart, inspiring emotions which simply aren’t genuine. When this magic fades, so too do the  emotions they inspired. Even spellcasters which derive their powers fr...

College of the Mad God

Inspired by one of my favorite H.P. Lovecraft stories, "The Music of Erich Zann" (which you should read here), this Bard College blurs the line between warlock and bard, and has a strong focus on the power of insanity and the fear it brings with it. In my experience, there’s always one player in each D&D group (maybe it’s been you) who decides to play an “insane” character for a lark...

Circle of Stones

Magnificent stone henges are as perfect a match for druid lore as an area control subclass is a match for their mechanics. Raise safe haven for your allies and travel the ways between with this Druid subclass from Valda’s Spire of Secrets. Originally developed in 2020 with our friend Grand Moff Xela, this is the most up-to-date version.

College of Jesters

A little bit Clown Prince of Crime, a little bit Danny Kay – you knew we were going to make a Bard like this! This is the most up-to-date version of a subclass we released in 2020 and collected in Valda’s Spire of Secrets.

Circle of the Fist

Fight for the trees and channel natural magic into your unarmed strikes with this monk-flavored subclass for druid! It’s the definitive version of a Druid subclass we first developed in 2016 and updated for Valda’s Spire of Secrets. This is the most up-to-date version!

Do Owlbears Lay Eggs?

Ever wondered about the ecology of your favorite D&D monsters? During Origins Game Fair 2024, Mage Hand's resident ecology experts, Book of Extinction creator Lucas Zellers and 3D artist Rae Beldolor, hosted a sold-out panel exploring how classic monsters lived and interacted with their environment.

Enjoy this panel and stay tuned for more informative (and not-so-informative) drops in the future!

Valda’s Compatibility Packet

This digital-only packet contains Book of Extinction-themed subclasses for our base classes from Valda's Spire of Secrets. New subclasses include:

  • The Polymorphist. An alchemist subclass that brews potions to transform into animals, captures animals for use in combat.

  • The Treant Banner. A captain subclass and an archetypal fey leader focusing on terrain-based tactics.

  • The Liveoaks...

Insomnia 0.91

Quick update!

We’re trucking through Insomnia’s art backlog and approaching 1.0 at a rapid pace! There’s over 20 pieces of new art in this version of the book, with completed NPCs for Nowhere, USA and other big new pieces throughout. If you’re playing with Character Beats (my favorite addition in the book) there’s ten more, buffing that section out by another page!

The Dragonfall Colosseum

We’re always looking for ways to make game night more fulfilling and help your players discover the best of Mage Hand classes and settings. So we’re polishing up a few ideas from past projects into campaign seeds, full arcs or short campaigns you can run for your party with minimum prep and maximum freedom.
First up, a send up of classic sword-and-sandal tropes in a gladiatorial arena, based in a city we explored in 2024-07-19 16:00:00 +0000 UTC View Post

Circle of the Wyrm

Valda’s Spire of Secrets collected and updated the best classes and subclasses from Middle Finger of Vecna since we began writing the blog back in 2015. We wanted to make the best version of these subclasses available as freely as the original. We’re starting with one of our favorites, a druid circle infused with draconic essence for half-dragon Wild Shapes!

Gravity Spells

Only one spell in the 5E SRD affects gravity directly, the 7th level reverse gravity. As magic users begin to travel the stars in a sci-fi setting, manipulating gravity becomes even more useful and deadly. And we’d like you to be able to do it before level 12! So here are three spells that let you bend gravity to your will!

Custom Character Sheets | Core Classes 1

Just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in!

I said I was done with these slick, form-fillable custom character sheets. But damn it, we needed a set of character sheets to go in the Last Owlbear adventure bundle, and using core classes made the most sense. So obviously I started work on a massive pile of these things. Soon, you’ll be able to play LITERALLY every class and subclass in Valda’s Spire of Secrets on a custom character sheet.

Living Weapons

For our revision of Dark Matter, we’re not only revising the old list of magic items, but also expanding it with new categories!

Meet living weapons: weapons that scale with your level.

These have been so obvious an inclusion to the game that D&D 3.5 included them as “relics” in the Magic Item Compendium, so it’s a wonder that it took us this long to implement them!
