This (and the trio's follow-up, The One After It, are albums that get stuck on repeat for me. Ones that I've listened to for hours on end and am always happy when they come up for the 1001st time.

If you want to experience a session at one of the world's premier locations for it, this album was the first to capture that feeling well, and of course all the tunes are played by world-class players.

It's good to listen to stuff other than flute and whistle to get an idea of how the other half lives, and to pick up some new ways of thinking about tunes. If you haven't crossed paths with him, John Carty is a brilliant banjo and fiddle player (among other things) and has written some lovely tunes that have found their way well into the session tradition. Great tunes, played fantastically.

This is a classic album of lovely tunes played brilliantly by one of the best to pick up the instrument. Many are played on alternate-keyed instruments (Eb and C, for example) so you might need to grab a different whistle to play along but it's worth the effort!

Carrying on the tradition of one of my big inspirations, fiddle player Bill Verdier, I'm starting a new series of album recommendations. These are albums to be deeply listened - tune choice, ornamentation, variation, arrangement - spend some time listening to specifics as well as the 10,000 foot view.
To start this series I'm going with one of those albums that my buddy Bill issued to all of us in the scene: Fourmilehouse by Alan and John Kelly. Great tunes played brilliantly on flute a...
