There are safehouses scattered around the Island, connected by tunnels. We’re moved about, until it’s safe for small groups of us to be ferried here. Cyras managed to make some deal with that Admiral, and things got a lot faster, more streamlined, and after many years it was finally my turn.

S:...why are you being hunted? Cyras said it’s for...your memories?

P: (smiles) something has the Director worried. She’s starting to see the cracks, and she’s wanting to patch ‘em...

. I assumed you both had been also, and honestly, the Murder life is hard, but you were safer in one. As I’d been searching, I’d learned of the slow disappearance of the old Crows. There are many friends i never saw again, gone in the night. I was alone, vulnerable. I knew no Murder in their right mind would take me in. I remembered that one Murder had offered to, years ago. I went to Cyras. Instead of offering me a new name, he offered me an escape. I took it.

We managed to hold onto one thing, at least. All the Murders, the Tidings, the Clatterings, the Bands, the Chatterings – they were named after old-world Corvid factions. an act of defiance, the last remnant of our ancestors we were able to hold on to. Not many of us know that, though. Just more history, lost. But i try to save as much of it as i can.

S: ...why only the old Crows?

C: they’re the most vulnerable.

S: surely all corvids are in danger?

C: ah,...

mostly the older crows, who had known no other life. The young were forced to leave and assimilate into the slums the government had corralled the losers of the war into. The ones who were already living on the island, at least. The ones who had actually fought were killed. Our culture and history beaten out of us. Until the new generations, our generations, know nothing of the life before. Only the darkness we were hatched into.
