Contrary to popular opinion, Abel Boddy was not set in New York. It's actually in a fictional city that's more like Portland or Austin or Midtown Atlanta. Dickey D's was the longstanding neighborhood gay bar, which was located on the gay strip on Bailey Avenue. It's pedestrian friendly. There's no subway, but there is a local trolley.

We Gotta Talk About Cornhole...

Before I could get back into my 12-Inch story, I need to solve the problem that is Mr. Cornhole. Farthest to the right is my last "good" design - which isn't really good enough. He's not really lining up with the others (imo) and his shapes are too simple to move him around.

I went back and watched some old footage of building Supers from old sitcoms for inspiration and then started retooling (the left one) - which is NOT there either but I'm working on it.

Another walk and talk between Howard and Bonnie. In retrospect, every major arc should've opened this way because I found it was a great way to set the tone for what was coming but also integrate Howard's best girlfriend into the story. "Friendly Fire" - Redux (a WIP)

I used to say 12-Inch Roommate was an "improvisational comic". This is because, when I started drawing these characters like, a decade and half ago, I would just sketch out the images on storyboard templates and then figure out the dialogue and story later. This eventually shifted to me doing the same in a 3-panel comic format.

Howard's outfit in this story - your standard suit vest with no shirt, sandals and bubble shorts (lol) - is the sort of ridiculousness I adore.

I really liked this 7 strip arc, so I'm posting the whole thing. Howard was single for the first five years of me drawing & writing this thing, and when I did choose to give him a boyfriend there was a lot of ramp up establishing the guy as this sort of patient but in demand, hot but unassuming, honest but aloof fantasy that countered Howard...

"Quick?" - LOL

In the morning with my coffee, I'll be like: "Just draw a quick thing." And then I'll spend 30 minutes trying to get the right angle on a character's six pack in a state of extension and each time I draw it, I'll be like "Better" and then I sit back and say "Ugh. No." and then rinse and repeat and never put down a final line.

Spring Cleaning, pt. 2

More sketches I want to keep for some reason.

#1 - This is me trying to loosen up some designs for Jockstrap Academy but also make the characters look like they are from the same world.

#2 - More JA but focusing on Cannen's torso, which has a really specific shape - probably overthinking it, as usual.

Jumping Off Points - Character Shit

These Matt poses were inspired some stuff in my reference folders - which I've been trying to clean out. The above drawings could be a little more dimensional but I'm just happy to be able to delete to some shit from my hard drive.

I also went through the extra effort to figure out a color palette for Matt. I wasn't trying to think too hard about it but essentially decided that Matt would be mostly cool neutrals and "off-colors". IDK, probably not important.

In my continued search for Howard's best outfits in my comic Abel Boddy, I found this look from 2009.

I enjoy a walk and talk, an establishing shot and when characters are doing a few things at once - so this set up was always a particular fave. I think I had established earlier that there was an A&F/Hollister-like clothing store called Elder, which was inspired by Mormons - so in this short arc Howard gets a gift card from Bonnie and reluctantly goes shopping at Elder even...

Hard Lessons - ruff layout

In my procrastination script there's this scene where a Short King is teaching his tall friend how to stand up for himself. I thought I would sketch it out a little. It's missing a some details - like SK is supposed to be wearing a cock-ring and tall guy should have on a funny little hat.

With my comic Abel Boddy I was dedicated to regularly changing the outfits of my protagonist Howard. This is a for better or for worse situation since I got to live my Carrie Bradshaw ridiculous outfit fantasy but also comic strip artists put their characters in the same costumes every time for a reason - speed.

Hanging in There

12-Inch Sketchbook - Mr. Cornhole

I'm working on the page where Mr. Cornhole, the building's superintendent, makes his first appearance and boy has it been a struggle. You never really know how a character design will perform until after you've started using it.

In the original 12-Inch comics, Cornhole's role was played by Mr. Fropley - a design I never liked or got to work (so I killed him off) and I didn't want to make the same mistake twice.
