This has been my distraction for the last 2 hours.

This day...I swear.

I'll explain more in a post after this.

Little bit of an update. Mostly housekeeping

Hi everyone!

Those of you who follow a few different authors might already know this, but Patreon changed the UI on the creator end and it's obnoxiously terrible.  If I make any mistakes with chapter postings, please let me know.  It'll 100% be because of these new changes.

Other than that, I'm cruising right along.  It's taken me a little longer than I thought it would to flesh out the plotting for book 2 of Past Life Hero, but I'm working on it now and I should ...

Past Life Hero, Start of book 2

Hi all!

Sorry for how late I'm telling you all, but I just looked at the chapter I was about to post and I'm not happy with it.

It gives me a lot more uninterrupted time if I wait to post chapters.  I'm going to have all 3 chapters for the week up by Friday, and maybe post 2 chapters on Wednesday to make up for today, but there won't be a chapter today/tonight.

Sorry for the wait!  But I've had to do this before, and I don't think ya'all mind as long as I get th...

Chapter 55

Max woke up on grainy asphalt.  He sat up to find himself in an alley. The air felt heavy, charged with anticipation.  For a moment, Max didn’t want to move.  It would have felt great to just take a nap.  A whiff of a nearby dumpster helped break the weight of the moment.  Sleeping on a street when there are monsters running around would mean I’d deserve to die, too.  He warily got to his feet.

It was nighttime.  He’d half-expected to se...

Chapter 54

Max stayed seated after The Morrigan left.  The room she’d created hadn’t changed, and it would continue to exist for about another half an hour.  She’d told him when the structure began to fall apart, Max would be transported to Earth.  Apparently, it was easier to move him from this place than if he went back to his own universe first.

Lavinia appeared and wordlessly took a seat across from Max.  She did not use the chair that The Morrigan had been sitting in...

Chapter 53

"I'm not promising to make a deal but I’m willing to hear you out, Lady Morrigan.”

“This is good.  How do you wish to proceed?”

Max was momentarily taken aback by the question, but decided to just roll with it.  “I want to ask one of my most pressing questions. Why do you want me to be your champion, especially if you're existing in another reality entirely?  Furthermore, why me?  I want to know if you have other Champions and what sort of deal I coul...

This chapter took me extra long to write, but it came out exactly how I wanted it to.

A kaleidoscope of images, impressions, histories, and facts assailed Max’s mind like a rapid fire stream of cannonballs covered in felt.  He was forced to gaze upon snap shots of a reality that he was currently too limited to truly see, but his spiritual eye felt like it was open for ages.  He shut his third eye as soon as he could, but the damage was done.

Sorry for the wait!

Plus side is these chapters are long!  I'm editing 52 now.  It'll come out in a few hours.

The inside of the temple dimly lit up as Max entered. The faint light was comforting at first, but when he glanced back, the illumination almost seemed to form a literal pool. It did not extend out of the entryway for more than about a foot.  Physics seemed to be more of a suggestion than a rule in this place.

Past Life Hero, Chapter 50

Max was able to keep track of time with his tablet, which was useful.  Otherwise he’d have no way of knowing how local time was passing in the dark.  He idly wondered if time would revert or change once he got back to the Quartet. Thinking about the different time flows and how they didn't match up honestly hurt his head, so after the first day, he stopped giving it any thought. His mission in the dungeon had become one of simple, methodical extermination.

At least time was ...

Max had to make a decision on which cave to explore. He had a hunch that the one decorated with fetishes would be a better choice.  Someone or something must have made them, which implied a certain level of intellect, opposable thumbs, and tool users. All sorts of nasty things could live in caves, but at Max's level of power, it would actually be easier for him to deal with creatures around his size or smaller with weapons versus certain types of beasts.

But just to be thorough, he...

Past Life Hero, Chapter 48

Max crouched in a half-cave he'd found, nothing deep enough for anything or anyone to live in.  It wasn’t even big enough to hide in very well, but at least it gave the illusion of temporary safety. The moment he'd realized something had gone wrong, he'd immediately tried to find some sort of shelter. He'd been listening intently for danger as he’d repositioned. Lavinia must have sensed it because she hadn't said anything.

But now that he was taking stock of the situation, Max ...

Past Life Hero, Chapter 47

For the next few days, Max focused on establishing a daily routine. He had decided to take Professor Grave Call up on the offer of not actually attending class very often for Basic Group Combat. This meant his days were mostly wide open.  So other than the times he set aside for training his five new students in Albion martial arts, he divided the rest of his time between either studying in the library or training.

His time in the library was much more fruitful and efficient now th...

Yay!

We're caught up now.  Taking a week off really threw me off my game!

Max was thankful for his martial arts teaching experience on Earth.  Beginning a class with new students in the Quartet felt very comfortable for him. It sort of felt like putting on an old shoe. He planned to meet everybody in the forest behind the Summoner Academy, somewhat near where he liked to train mana, but not quite the same place. It was away from prying eyes, and still had p...

Lance tapped his finger on the table. "I'll be real with you. I'm pretty frustrated."

"Okay," said Max, "so how about you talk first and I'll just listen while I eat."

Lance seemed to consider that and nodded his head.  "I had some time to think about everything that happened and given the situation, I think that you did everything you could for me during…I’ve been thinking of it as, ‘the incident.’

“Also, I've been feeling kinda guilty about the fact th...

Quick heads up on Past Life Hero

Hi everyone!

I'm tire of lagging behind on chapters, so instead of posting yesterday's chapter today--late--I'm just going to power through to get caught up and post a double chapter on Friday.

If figure that with the double, nobody will mind. :)

Max stood across the training field from Gantry, with Professor Grave Call to one side. The tall Man had pulled a simple chair over from somewhere and was just watching Max and Gantry watch each other. Max had noticed other students heading in their direction or watching from a distance for a while now. It definitely wasn't the entire class, but apparently a decent number of students had seen Gantry come back. Or maybe one of their spirits had alerted them of Max’s return like Gantry's had....

Max woke up and didn't know where he was at first. The room was far too large and opulent. It felt like his old life was overlapping the present, giving him a strange case of vertigo.  He stayed very still. After a few moments, the events leading to him acquiring this massive new dorm came back.

He got up and appreciated his new bedroom all over again.  It was ...

Max went to the front door, curious about who it could possibly be. He wasn’t even sure who would be aware that he had just purchased this dorm.  The uncertainty made him extra wary.  Golem guards outside were nice, but he still wasn’t sure exactly how powerful they were.

He opened the door and saw a man who looked very familiar, but it took him a second to jog his memory.  Finally, he r...

It was somewhat unsurprising to learn from the golems that all of the most expensive rooms were empty. In fact, for Max, it was more eyebrow-raising that the golem spoke with such a normal human-sounding voice. He'd been expecting them all to sound robotic, maybe echoey or mystical sounding, or perhaps even like the grinding of rocks together. Instead, the first golem that he talked to had introduced itself as Bob and very politely informed him of the room's cost and availability.

The b...

Max left the alley and headed straight for the portion of the central area where weapons and armor were sold.  He felt conspicuous as hell carrying his loot, especially the three long spears. Luckily, he didn't have to go far. Even though he hurried, he still attracted a few curious glances.

Once he was on the main street with the weapon shops, the...

The restaurant was called The Blue Ox. Max decided that it looked a lot like college hangouts on Earth.  One of the only differences was how instead of TV screens with sports games playing, there were large magic crystals in the corner with some sort of song and dance routines instead.  Max glanced around and was slightly disappointed that there didn't seem to be many people there. He was hoping to find a group of Mystic Spear Path students right away.

As he walked across the school grounds, Max noticed more stolen glances or even open staring, even among upperclassmen. Lavinia must have noticed as well because he heard her voice in his ear saying, "Wow! You're really becoming famous, huh? You know, I was famous in my time too, or maybe infamous. Then again, you might be infamous as well." The ghost girl chuckled.

Max said, "Quiet, you. This is only the first step of the plan."

"Well, it would be nice if you'd clue me in on the ...

Pat Life Hero, Chapter 37

Max woke up in what was becoming an increasingly familiar field. He sat up, looking around himself.  “Ugh,” he grunted.  He spotted his clothes, which he'd been wearing when he'd been killed, neatly folded in a pile next to him on the ground. The clothes he currently had on were the same basic starter rags he was always wearing when he came to life in the Quartet.  There were no blood stains on the clothes he was wearing or the ones on the ground. Wow, he thought, ...

Chapter 36

As Max left the restroom-turned-slaughter house, he briefly thought about using the kitchen to set a fire or blow something up. However, he decided against it for the same reason he hadn't seriously considered it before. Demerits were one thing, and he was resigned to stacking up demerits like crazy. But there was a big difference between killing someone who was going to respawn in a week, a month, or even a few months later, versus destroying property.

Max was not naive and knew that t...

Max peeked out the door into the hallway of the unfamiliar dorms.  He quickly realized that beyond just the size of the rooms, these buildings were built much differently, layout-wise, than the ones on the Summoner Academy grounds. Firstly, this room did not have a common area between two other rooms he was used to. Instead, the door opened directly into the hallway. Max was surprised at this because the buildings had looked like they were huge from the outside. But then he realized how ...

New tier question - need input

***This post is only for $10 and $20 tiers.***

Now that we're 15 chapters ahead of Royal Road, I need to ask a housekeeping question.

Some authors with big web serials have stretch goals, and they'll add more chapters to their highest tiers if they get more Patreon patrons.

It's also a pain in the ass juggling chapters on Patreon.  That's a tools problem and it is what it is.

My question is:

Would you all prefer I keep the tiers as-is (after I make the $1...

Sneaking into the Mystic Spear Academy grounds ended up being much easier than Max had feared. The Mystic Spear grounds were intimidating.  Unlike the front of the Summoner Academy grounds that were just one big pen forest with a road and a gate, the Mystic Spear Academy gate also had a fence that ran through the entire forest.

The fence was fifteen feet high and curved outward with razor points. Furthermore, on the other side of the fence were booby traps and all sorts of nasty su...

Max spent an entire day in the forest, testing his new capabilities.  He also worked out strategies and shortcut codes for them with Lavinia that he thought of while he'd been refining mana. It felt great to finally have a complete mana body again. Of course, the downside was that achieving a two-star mana body with the low amount of mana in this quartet would take much, much longer.

He'd been doing a good job ignoring his hunger, but at the end of his training session that night, ...

Max had some pep in his step.  He was still furious about what the Spear brothers had done, but now he had an opportunity to learn something new again.

He left his dorm and immediately headed for the edge of campus. Lavinia disappeared once he started moving, but he could sense that she was just a call away. Furthermore, now that he had a contract, he felt that his third eye had grown much stronger. He had...
