Making of "Gaming Marathon"

I came up with this one ages ago after watching the kids bouncing around gaming.  I knew it would be challenging visually and I didn't feel I had the chops for it at the time, so I left it on my ideas list.  There it sat until last month when our oldest celebrated his 9th birthday.  He asked for a gaming party at home and we delivered.  Our house filled to the brim with bouncy gaming boys, I realized quite how on point the joke was and resolved to draw it!

I started ...

Making of "Seasonal Scare"

Our youngest (6) and hubby are all about Halloween, (oldest and I like it too, but we're not AS obsessed!) so they both stalk the shops in August waiting for the Halloween merch to land.  Target is the avocado of Halloween shopping (it's not there, it's not there, it's THERE! It's all gone!) so they make multiple trips to try to catch it in time.  They went the other day and the result was this comic minus Vincent.  I loved 6yo's "Howibble" reaction, but wanted a bit more punch...

COMIC: Seasonal Scare

This was a bit spooky because it happened to J and our 6yo, which gave me the idea for the comic.  Then it happened AGAIN with the 9yo in tow and I got to show him the comic and he said the line! Talk about life imitating art! πŸ˜‚

Making of "Vaguebooking"

Realized I never did a write up of this one, sorry!

This was a very silly idea of mine!  Dogs apparently get a whole lot of information out of butt sniffing so I reasoned that if an anthro dog wanted to find something out, they might try sniffing  someone's butt!  The obvious (well to me!) set up was having Fran not wanting to share some gossip/feelings and Bunny havin...

Making of "Warpath BONUS"

I went though quite a few ideas for this bonus panel!  Something about the idea of a mug being the only thing standing in the way of total destruction was funny to me.  I had Joel and Vincent discussing it in the foreground with Cooper about to leap on Fran in the background, but I didn't like how dumb Joel was coming off, not realizing that Cooper can't read.  I changed it to Vincent being the one that didn't think of it, but had to move them off camera to make room for all th...

Making of "Warpath"

I often notice when my hormones are out of whack because my inner monologue gets unnecessarily bitchy, but sometimes J will notice before I do.  I'm usually relieved to have it pointed out because it means whatever is troubling me won't seem so bad in a few days.  One time recently though I was having a really crappy time of it and I was SURE it wasn't "that time" again yet.  He delicately asked, as he always does, but this time I bit his head off!  He apologized profusely...

COMIC: Seasonal Shopping (plus BONUS panel!)

Sorry I've been a bit absent of late.  Had a couple of trips away, plus 8yo is now 9yo!  Kids went back to school today, so I'll be able to get back at it with comics.  Literally just finished this one -based on something that happened to the boys the other day.  I'll come back and update this post once I have a bonus panel, but wanted to get it out to you asap.

EDIT: BONUS Panel!

Based on a (reoccurring!) true story! πŸ˜…Been away, so I'm running a bit behind, but managed to knock this one out in airports and planes!  I love my iPad!

Edit: BONUS PanelS!

Took ages to think up a bonus panel and then couldn't decide which line I liked better, so you get TWO!

Making of "Chicken Strip"

Good news everybody!  I figured out making time-lapse videos in Clip Studio!  I'd tried other methods of screen recording before, but they were always a pest because I stop and start comics a lot (#momlife!) and would have to knit the videos together afterwards with low levels of success.  The way Clip does it is masterful though!  Just toggle on recording and the finished movie looks like it was all done in one sitting!  Unfortunately I didn't think to turn it on unt...

Tier Confusion

To eliminate confusion with the subscription levels I've unpublished the $2 tier.

Those of you enrolled in that tier may stay there for as long as you like and I will continue to publish behind the scenes content for you all; it just prevents new people from pledging at that level.

The $5 tier is now the "get everything"  level to make it fair for everyone across subscription platforms.

Sorry for all this upheaval with the subscriptions and paywalls!  I abso...

Making of "Puppy Power"

This pup made her debut all the way back in Jun 2018! Turns out babies aren't made how you were told, they come about when a writer needs 2 moms to be at a baby group together to horrify the internet with hyena facts! :)

Poor little pup has been in a couple of strips since then, but always as more of a prop.  For her first proper comic, I wanted to make sure I established her main 2 characte...

Making of "Moral Of The Story"

FYI: it's been brought to my attention that Patreon aren't blurring out locked images very well so I'll be moving the main image down into the body of the post.  Not sure how that will affect reading them and I'm sorry if it's negatively.  I wrote to Patreon to ask them to up the blur and they advised me to do this instead which I thought was weird, but there you go! (:

Alright, on with this making of post and welcome to my new patrons!

Making of "Hatchlings (remastered)"

This is a remaster of a comic from 2019.  I often worry they're not going to change that much, but then I look at the side by side and can't believe how much difference a bunch of tiny tweaks makes!

As well as redrawing all the linework and adding shadows, I reworked the speech bubbles, moving "It has it's pros!" to the 1st panel to make the punchline punchier.  A bit more rearrangement allowed me to make the moms bigger -the croc mom even more so.  I changed Fran's expre...

COMIC: Moral of the Story

Still have to figure out a bonus panel, but wanted to get this early release comic to you guys!  This one actually happened, but replace "brothers" with "siblings" and the show was "Gravity Falls"!

For the bonus, I was going to have them both being friends when Fran leaves because that's how it feels like it happens, but J didn't get the joke.  All worried now because if people have to pay for bonus panels, I need them to be good!  Maybe all comics don't need bonus panels...

COMIC: Fran tries a Grimace Shake

There's a challenge on Twitter to draw your character drinking a Grimace Shake and dying.  If I was my character, this is exactly how it would go down.

Tried my best to speed draw this as it's a silly throwaway comic. Also of note, I cannot vouch for the shake being "yummy" yet, but Fran enjoys Peeps when I don't, so I figure she'd like whatever this nonsense is!

Few Changes Around Here

July marks the end of my deal with Webtoon to release comics there before anywhere else.  That means $5 and up subscribers will once again enjoy early release comics!  Woohoo!

I'm going to continue with the monthly Dog Comics because they've been fun!  Junes comic is running a bit late, but it is underway and is the first comic centered around the little puppy girl.

Going forward I'll be focusing on upping my subs to make up for the loss in Webtoon revenue (that was...

Making of "Need to Brush"

Getting my oldest to brush his teeth has always been a challenge.  His younger brother will happily comply (and according to his dentist, even do a pretty good job!) -but it's a nightly war of words to convince #1.  This comic wasn't actually something he said, but me anticipating his counter argument.

For those of you who say I should come back with "Tooth Fairies don't want dirty teeth!" -Yup! Tried that!  All the consequences are just too far away for his ADHD b...

Making of "Let it Out"

Bad news: this one was a nightmare.  Good news! it generated a bunch of behind the scenes content!

I was approached by Skybound to do a comic to help promote Mr. Lovenstein's new book Kickstarter.  I was truly honored to be asked because I always feel a little different from those "cool" webcomic folks.  I'm just a silly mum drawing cats and it feels a bit different than the pure crisp humor they do. ...

I'm not actually sure how this one came to me.  Something just clicked while watching the cats being crazy at night after sleeping all day (seriously, these cats are paying for themselves with ideas!)

I'd seen a similar comic before by Gemma Correll and worried it might be too close:
