Making of "Deadlock BONUS"

My Brain #1: I’ve been falling behind with comics lately, but I can get ahead on this one by doing a real simple bonus panel with 2 piles of dust and “Wash your dust.”

My Brain #2: Oh! Oh!  I’ve got another idea!

Brain #1: Is it as easy as 2 piles of dust…?

Brain #2: Suuuuure!  It’ll be REAL quick -I promise!

Brain #1: Wait a minute… 😠

Brain #2: Too late! You love it now! 😃

COMIC: Deadlock (remastered)

The immovable object meets the errrr... OTHER immovable object?

Edit: BONUS Panel!

Really happy with this remaster!  One of my 1st rules of remastering is to try to make the characters as big as possible.  The change in angle really makes this one pop, plus I learned some coloring tricks from 2021-03-13 15:02:43 +0000 UTC View Post

Sorry, been falling a bit behind with comics at the mo!  Getting there with all my other commitments though! :)

Making of "Discharged"

Taking your 1st kid home from the hospital is weird.  We've always joked that the bar should be higher than just needing a car-seat.

I usually don't know what animal "extras" are going to be when I first sketch them out, so they start out as blank "people" shapes.  For this, I realized I could get a gag in about a stork "delivering a baby".  Birds are a bit of a pain because of their strange body shapes and big "hands", so I had to shuffle things around a little bit to ge...

Making of "World of Parentcraft"

For those unfamiliar with World of Warcraft terminology, it translates as:

Thanks for handling the kids for us tonight!  We already put the baby to bed, but you'll need to entertain the older one for a bit.  He learned some new tricks recently, so watch out he doesn't wear you down or get mad.  If he gets too much, just give him his iPad until he runs out of energy.  If the baby wakes up, keep giving him his pacifier until he goes back to sleep. *Dad joke...

Happy Birthday Link

I discovered today that I share my birthday with Legend of Zelda!  I'm 6 years older, so I was inspired to draw 6 year old Fran fangirling out.

This is the first time I've drawn her as a kid and I'm pretty smitten!  Tempted to do some comic strips from her youth, what do you think?

Happy 35th Birthday Link! 💕

Making of "Food Art"

Rolling backouts have ceased, so I can get back on my computer to post this!

My friend posts photos of the clever food arrangements she makes her kid and I'm always impressed how great they look and that he actually eats them.  I've seen it!  It happens!

My 6yo is a very fussy eater, but to be fair, he gets it from me, so I do sympathize! :)

I can't help but ...

Valenstime!

4yo:  Tomorrow, Mummy gonna give me Mickey Mowse cards and I’m gonna give them out to everyone for Valenstime!

J:  No, buddy. It’s not Valenstime yet.

4yo:  -But we’re in LOVE!

J:  Who’s in love?

4yo:  Me! And you and Mummy and Cap Cap* and 6yo!

6yo:  -We’re not in love. I don’t like you at all.

Making of "What's in a Name?"

Last year was the first time we had to sit down and write Valentines to the class.  He complained a lot and it was pretty dreadful, but I got a bunch of comic ideas for THIS year! 😅

Sadly there is no Hermione and Kylo in his class, but when I was looking at the names list, I thought how cool it would be if there was!

I tried to pack in another idea into this one, which is kids moaning about Valentines but then LOVING all the crap they get.  Squeezing 2 jokes in...

Eye for an Eye

*Me breaking up fight*

6yo: -But he hit me!

Me: Because YOU hit HIM!  Look, long ago it was an eye for an eye, but do you know what happens?  Everyone ends up blind!

6yo: No they don't.

Me: What?

6yo: The first person wins.  Other guy can't see, so he can't take the last eye.

Making of "Baby Pics"

These "relatable" ones are always a roll of the dice.  Either people will have the same experience and find it funny, OR they'll have no idea what you're on about and it will bomb.  Luckily for me, it seems to have landed and people aren't thinking I'm some sort of baby-hating-monster! 😅

The 1st draft was longer and had Fran in the photos too.  I removed her because a) she muddied the joke about newborns being weird looking and b) I'd never forget looking drea...

Update Update!

So last week had the additional wrinkle of 6yos teacher testing positive.  We got him tested and he's thankfully fine, but the kids both had to stay home to be extra sure.  This meant us all living on top of each other in an Air BnB while our house was torn apart to remove the mold.  Then back to our house with half of the downstairs sealed off and the stuff that was in that half, piled up in the other half.

Needless to say, I didn't get much done! :)

I have 2 comic...

Update

Our house is getting torn up next week (thanks mold!) so I'm busy moving stuff around in preparation.  I'm hoping I can get back to drawing next week, but I might hold off from posting publicly so I can build up a bit of a buffer again.  I will be posting here for the $5+ tiers though.  We'll see how it goes, just wanted to give you guys a heads up that I'm still here, just preoccupied :)

Making of "Little Taste"

I have developed quite a good "nag filter" which, among other things, is useful for catching nags that might backfire.  The 1st panel actually happed, but then the rest played out internally in my head.  I turned to J afterwards and laughed about how I'd almost scolded him for eating the Froot Loops I'd just had, to which he replied (as he often does!) "That's a strip right there!" :)

Drawing packaging is always an additional hurdle, but I love how it looks.  I wanted to ...

Making of "New Years Resolution"

I have this problem quite frequently, where I try to stay off my phone, but then something happens that I HAVE to post about.  If I can't figure out a good way to phrase a post, I write it down in a Google Doc to use for a comic or photo quote later.  I rooted through my photo quotes file and found these gems!  Both were from quite a while ago but I'd never been able to get a good photo because I'm not going in a restaurant or plane anytime soon!  As there's no pandemic in...

Making of "Countdown"

I saved it and messaged her this year asking if I could use it and she said YES! :)

VIDEO: Drawing the Christmas Picture

Taking process videos has proved difficult because comics usually take at least 4hrs (usually a lot more!) and aren't done all in one sitting.  This results in me having a bunch of clips I have to stuck together to make a VAST video I then need to compress, which I've had a really hard time doing.

I realized early into drawing the Christmas picture that it would be faster to draw than a regular comic and therefore a good candidate to film.  I'd already drawn out the 1st rough ...
