I've mentioned many times that all nighters are one of the important things that gets us going. This was a recent one a week ago. There is a video also in the making from that night.

Another one of the nude portraits of Shasta that will be posted occasionally one by one.
This one was shot around the middle of the day in backlight, with me and camera in Shasta's shadow. That's how I usually shoot backlight by getting into the shadow of the model and working around the edge of that shadow where the sun starts coming through and providing flare. It's a delicate line that one, a centimetre too far and the whole image is blown (which may not be a bad thing). Difficult th...

For 5 years I’ve chronicled the life of an international travelling model. These images are archived for a prospective book project and to my knowledge there is no archive quite like this. I honestly don't think there are many people who know what really exists behind the scenes. I mean, I was photographing and associating with travelling models for a decade before I met Aurora and I thought I had a reasonable idea of the life of a travelling model, but little did I know! 2023-10-24 12:28:58 +0000 UTC View Post
Shot in a grand old Polish palace we stayed in. We were the only guests as it was winter. Pretty spooky actually out in the corridors at night but a truly memorable stay for sure.

Dunno 'bout you, but stockings do it for me 🥵
Nikon Z6
35mm f2.8 manual focus, 50mm f1.8.
I have a number of different series of portraits of Shasta coming to Patreon, most of which haven't been edited before. These particular images have been shown before. They were shot on the Pentax 67 on Kodak Portra 160 and Tri-X.
What I loved about shooting Shasta was the way her skin glowed and shone on film. I knew this would be the case before hand so I planned the shoot for the middle of the day in summer.

I shot a heap of images of Jan-Karel Kok (@jankarelkok) shooting Aurora at Emma's (@riel.life) place in Lopik, Netherlands. This is one of my favourite forms of photography - shooting the interactions between two people, it could be a photoshoot like this, it could be an erotic/sensual dynamic, it could be a simple conversation... The shot...

I guess most creatives don’t reach the stage of development that we have. I’m not trying to say, “wow look how fucking great we are” by the way, I’m saying we’re at that stage where we are desperately trying for something new. This can be painful, for both of us. It means Aurora is looking for ways to escape her ‘model zone’ and I’m looking for ways to break certain shooting habits and at the same time, trying to still produce good images. That’s hard because breaking moul...

This tour is nearly done. We’re currently in the Utrecht area and heading to Hannover tonight then via Berlin to Poznan.
First stop was Antwerp where Aurora had a number of shoots. We shot some stuff in the AIRBNB we were staying in, film and digital.
Next stop was Lopik in the Netherlands where we stayed for a few days with Emma (@riel.life), had some parties and did a lot of drivi...

A little video before we shot a set in the grasses behind the dunes at Scheveningen, Netherlands. Scheveningen is one of our fave places to hang, we’ve been there many times, the first time was 2018 with Zoi model. I’ve posted the shots of Zoi before but included here for today’s context. Can’t wait to process the film from the shoot we did today in the grasses.
Set 2, the first set is here. The last shot is one of a fashion set we shot in Madrid, which I'll upload soon.

One of a series of images made with Aurora and Ana in Lisbon, April 2023. Most of these will be posted as single images until the whole series has been edited.
Z6, 50mm, ISO 6400, f6.3, 1/40s, manual focus. Aperture can't be what I normally use when shooting at the minimum focusing distance with two subjects. No skin retouching, just didn't make sense to do that here.

Lake George is a huge salt lake which intermittently fills with water although the last time it full was 1971. It's said to be over a million years old. I've always loved places like this where there is an unobstructed view to the horizon, no trees, nothing. I spent a lot of time around the Lake Eyre region in central Australia, photographing it and absorbing the place at a spiritual level....

This video was made at a time when I was searching for ways to push my portrait work toward something more meaningful, something that would make my work something more than "model photography". I talked about this is many previous articles, namely the following recent ones...

This set was shot here just after sunset. The light was something else, the long twilight glow making for great skin tones.

Here is set 1 of the promised set of Lucy on film...
They were shot with one of my Pentax 67's (both broken now) on TRI-X.
Processing was using the same formula I've used all my life, Ilford ID-11 mixed 1:1 for working strength solution. Processing times were usually standard as mentioned in the documentation from Kodak and 2023-09-30 07:42:53 +0000 UTC View Post

The shots in the water went for about an hour leading up to almost darkness. These were really challenging because the best compositions and poses only existed for a few seconds due to the strong current. Aurora really had to work in order to try and stay in the position long enough f...

We need somewhere to start, a trigger. That’s my left brain talking – see – I need a formula. A formula for being an artist! A little contradictory.
Anyway, here goes…

If you can put any of these emotions into the image that you see in the viewfinder and THEN transfer the image to the viewer then you have possibility of creating a “GREAT” photograph.
You may be high
You may be low
You may be rich, child
You may be poor
But when the Lord get ready
You gotta move

This post and much of its content (aside from some small recent updates) was originally presented to a local camera club in Sydney, the North Sydney Camera Club. It was 2012 I think. I'd been approached to give a talk/presentation and at the time I happened to be thinking about all this stuff anyway...
Many years ago when I was preoccupied with landscape photography I arrived at a standstill. I had done it all as far as landscapes goes, and I couldn't see a way...
