2024 Reader Questions Week 11

1. The reason why there are two Nemean Lions on the Elder Council is because Dr. Hobbes represents the Nemean Council, while Nuala is the official Nemean Elder. Hobbes answers to Nuala.

2. Everyone thinks you're irresponsible, Jon, because you're irresponsible.

3. I had never heard of Bahkauvs before, but I like them! They apparently live in the German Rhineland and they pester drunk guys. I like that in a mythical creature.

4. Common gryphons are considered adults when thei...

2024 Reader Questions Qeek 9 and 10!

I'm going to Emerald City Comic Con on Wednesday, so I did TWO weeks worth of Reader Questions today so I wouldn't miss any as I recover from convention!

Week 9

1. I had never heard of this creature before! I have a rule that if something is described in ancient Greek or Roman mythology, it most likely exists in Skin Deep, so theows are definitely canon in Skin Deep!

2. Peryton Question 1: Adelle! A piebald peryton.

3. Peryton Question 2: A peryton buc...

2024 Reader Questions Week 8

For this week's reader questions I turned to the Skin Deep Discord!

1. Gabe is fine, probably. They are trying really hard to ignore any call to action they see.

2. Merial and Greg went to High School together, so their parents know each other.

3. Removable horse shoes are also an option for hoofed individuals that don't particularly want to have metal nailed into their feet.

4. I made Mary and Roald's parents up on the fly, so I reserve the right to change this at any...

2024 Reader Questions Week 7

1. One of my weaknesses: drawing pokemon. I love drawing them. Making gryphons out of them? Heck yeah okay.

2. Do you remember Zech?? He hasn't been in the comic for quite a spell. But he's still hanging around, being surly. He likes Freakazoid, like every good red-blooded American millennial.

3. Despite all the wild gryphons I draw for these reader questions, the amount of unusual gryphon combinations actually in the comic is very small, so a deer-based uncommon gryphon would be ...

2024 Reader Questions Week 6

For some reason this week's questions took a LOT out of me. Why was it so hard to draw these? Some days are just bad drawing days, I guess.

1. Oh Anthony, never stop being a surly 16 year old

2. Finally I get to show off my knowledge of drop hammer coin presses.

3. Fun fact about Jim's little round glasses: i used to draw him wearing those dumb things all the time circa 2003.

4. Honk Dragon gets No Respect.

5. VARIOUS MOTHMEN. I want to hug them all. I...

2024 Reader Questions Week 5

1. Lucky for y'all, I have recently been doing a re-listen of TAZ Balance so I have these boys on the brain again. I normally keep totem animal species to those native to North America, but there are a few populations of feral peacocks in the US nowadays, so it counts.

2. It's actually quite hard to draw a female Opinicus without the signature mane and make it still look like Michelle. Luckily, not a lot of her actually changes.

3. Baba Yaga is bad news, not even a bugbear will me...

2024 Reader Questions Week 4

Next Arc Writing Update: I have the FIRST SCENE written and an outline for the rest of it. It's happening, I'm writing it!

Reader Questions!

1. Bloodcarver is the oldest dragon that's not Dis Pater. It must've been very hard for him to see all his younger siblings turn on him like they did.

2. Lily will tell you everything you want to know about talismans! Unfortunately she does not know that much about talismans.

3. I drew this little bird and realized he looked like ...

2024 Reader Questions Week 4

1. This gryphon is just a little creature. This gryphon lives in gardens and goes on little adventures in Middle Earth.

2. Most Avalons are small, like the Springfield Avalon, and aquatic Avalons are usually even smaller. There are a few to be found in very deep waters like abandoned quarries. Saltwater Avalons are even more of a mystery, since deep sea creatures are able to keep to themselves and avoid humans a lot easier than terrestrial species.

3. I started drawing everybody a...

2024 Reader Questions Week 2

1. Don't worry Greg, everything is fine! I'm sure.

2. For bird people born as bird people, it is not difficult to use your feet as your primary hands. Marshall and David certainly don't have any issues. Anthony, on the other hand. Well he doesn't like it, no sir.

3. Despite having SO MANY BOOKS, I usually always start at Wikipedia list of folkloric creatures or list of mythical creatures/etc when I'm looking for a new critter for the comic. You gotta use wikipedia responsibly, tho...

2024 Reader Questions Week 1

Happy 2024! I am very glad to see 2023 in the back mirror. Y'all know I got covid not that long ago, but I also lost my father on Christmas after many months in the hospital. So it's been a rough season for me, and I haven't made a lot of headway on Skin Deep in the past couple months.

I appreciate everybody's endless patience with me for so long! I don't know how I ended up with such a great audience! Hopefully I'll make some progress on the next script soon.

Also regarding the B...

2023 Reader Questions Week 24

I still have covid but I had enough energy today to do some reader questions! Hooray!

1. I know the question asker wanted to see some proper australian possums but I took it as the chance to get very american about what we call possums up here, lol.

2. I would imagine that a lot of bird-eyed creatures can see in some form of UV, but I also think there's enough non-UV-seeing creatures that it's just assumed that most people can't see it. This makes David upset, though, he's beautif...

2023 Reader Question week 23

I wasn't going to do any reader questions this week because I am still recovering from Covid, but then I had an epiphany: old art I drew over a decade ago! Why not. I hope you enjoy this absolutely ancient art!

Old Art: Colin and Jim from 2005

I was looking through some of my ancient art and found this drawing of Colin and Jim that I posted to DeviantArt November 10, 2005. I used to draw SO MUCH in the 2000s, what happened to me.

2023 Reader Questions Week 22

There's only one gryphon this week!

1. A nixie biting someone would probably do...something. Would it do a full-on nixie transformation? Merial is willing to experiment, for science.

2. Stairs aren't impossible for snake-legged creatures, but they're not comfortable or very fun. If given the choice, they'll avoid them.

3. I don't...I don't like the kiwi podargian harpy. I don't like her.

4. You'd think a combo involving a honey badger would be something you'd want to a...

Fresno Nightcrawler sticker sheet

I was digging around in my sketchbook and I found this page of Fresno Nightcrawlers that I forgot I drew, and I liked the shapes a lot! So I made them into a sticker sheet. Will these be the stickers included with the next patreon pin club? I haven't decided yet!

2023 Reader Questions Week 21

Since I'm going to MFF this weekend, I needed to get another week of Reader Questions done before I left! I didn't mean for this week to be Owl Gryphon Week, but here we are. At least there are two non-gryphon questions!

1. Eleanor enjoying chaos, you say? Don't mind if she do.

2. A wolverine/great horned owl gryphon vs a goose/moose would end up with everything in a 5 mile radius completely destroyed

3. for a creature with no feline in it, a goat/owl gryphon would be awfull...

20 weeks? No way it's been 20 weeks. If I can just make it past the holidays I'll be golden and I can finally FINALLY make real progress on the next arc. Until then: MORE QUESTIONS

1. This is one of the reasons why Ravi's so frustrating, he knows just about everything but also he's just...he's very flighty.

2. I thought this question was going to be a slam dunk and then I tried to actually figure out what characters would be which x-men and after Vera=Nightcrawler I hit a wall. So...

2023 Reader Questions Week 19

I got enough gryphon questions that I decided to do a WHOLE WEEK OF WEIRD GRYPHONS. I thin my favorite of the bunch is the sand cat/kestrel. I feel like it would be one of those creatures that would poop and then zoom around yelling at 3am.

The Emu/dingo one...I don't know about that one. I wouldn't trust it.

2023 Reader Questions Week 18

Skin Deep turns 17 tomorrow (Saturday Nov 11)! Wow! Happy birthday, Skin Deep!

1) I think a prairie chicken/ground squirrel gryphon would make a lot of weird little noises.

2) Bloodcarver can wiggle his whiskers around, but they don't do much more than act as little feelers. He uses them primarily to check out unfamiliar things that are too small for his big fat fingers.

3) Wonderland might not have even been established by the time medallions were being made, so that begs t...

2023 Reader Questions Week 17

1. You know how Cassie from Animorphs was better at morphing than everyone else? It's kind of like that with medallions. Some people have better control over the magic than others, and can even slightly influence the look of their human illusion. To keep the magic user-friendly, the illusion is largely subconscious.

2. Don't worry, both Michelle and Bloodcarver got a nice long chance to just pass out for awhile after their ordeal. They were fully tuckered out.

3. It does seem like...

1. I've been enjoying people pointing me towards South American cryptids, I didn't know anything about them before these Reader Questions! There's a lot of great ones!

2. Most of the gryphon-mashups you're seeing here will most likely never be seen in the comic and are just fun little drawing exercises for me, and I can tell you right now that this jub-jub bird/bandersnatch gryphon is 100% not canon at all. 2023 Reader Questions Week 15

Week 15!

1. I think with creatures that live deep/far out in the ocean, there isn't really a need to hide from humans. So little is known about the animals humans DO know about, like blue whales, so any large, intelligent critter in the ocean probably doesn't have a lot of motivation to move to land and pretend to be human. They are worried about how humans keep encroaching, though.

2. This really kills me because I've made a conscious effort to keep the creatures in Skin Deep bas...
