The Car Seat Boys head to the rest of France!

France has always been fun to tour in because food is such a high priority for the French. Every venue we went to we were fed like kings. Instead of crappy plastic-packaged goods from a grocery store we were fed home-cooked meals and fresh breads and cheeses. One notable night in Lille the green room had a kitchen and the promoter's chef friend came over to cook us a meal. It was an amazing chicken curry (they made a vegetarian version for S...

BRUSSELS / LONDON / PARIS

SD: We drove west from Hamburg to get to Brussels, Belgium to play at this cool cultural center called the Botanique. The building was almost like an ornate greenhouse complete with a glass dome and a massive garden complex out front. It seemed a little to good to be true when we were pulling up to load in, but when they guided us underground to the cellar it started to make more sense. The downstairs venue was all brick with these massive arches supporting the...

Archive Sunday #14

We're back for another exciting episode of Archive Sunday. This Sunday the Boys head back to Europe. This time we start in the wonderful city of Berlin, which I would say is in my top 3 cities in Europe. I would definitely live there. It's a very hip culture with graffiti plastered all over the city, but not in an obnoxious way. It's also big on raving which we came to find out because our hotel was across the street from a club (not too far from the dildoking sign in the first picture). Seth...

September Newsletter: The Studio

I write to you from boarding group “C” of a flight from Seattle to LA. A week of vacation with the family, and then a solid month in the studio with the boys. Usually the days leading up to recording time are spent in restless planning, getting backing tracks bounced and practicing parts to a fine point; this happenstance scheduling will be an experiment in whether unplugging and relaxing beforehand will be a viable option for me.

I do not enjoy recording studios. They are sunless, ...

Notice for September

The following month we will spend largely in the studio (more on that in the newsletter!) and as such, I won't have much spare time to devote to internet dealings. Ethan will be doing the solo performance stream for September, and beyond Archive Sunday stream I probably won't be present much - though hopefully with a few peeks at our studio time to make up for it. We wanted to make this clear beforehand so if anyone wanted to suspend their subscription for the month until I'm back in a more a...

The Car Seat Boys head back west after a big east coast run! I was looking through these pictures and noticed how tired all of us were and then remembered that the routing for this tour was complete shit. We were booked to go Seattle, east 5 hours to Spokane, then BACK west to Bellingham, then BACK east to Boise....  Then we drove through Salt Lake City, Denver, Arizona, San Diego, to LA, San Francisco, then back up north to Portland and Eugene. It was so much damn driving. The west coas...

AK: So this post will wrap up the east coast tour with NE-HI. We stopped in Richmond, Atlanta, Nashville and Omaha though it was all a blur. I honestly can't remember a single show. Even the pictures don't bring up any memories for me. That's sort of how it goes sometimes when you're on the road. Things can really start to blend together because it's all such a routine: wake up, drive to the venue, set up, play show, go to bed. Rinse and repeat. Often times I've found myself waking up in a ho...

The infamous tiny drum set from our Tiny Desk concert! This is going to be a fun one.

So it looks like we blew through Toronto, Cambridge and NYC because I didn't get more than a few pictures between all three of those shows. But we've now made our way to the NPR building in Washington D.C. where we are set to play our Tiny Desk. From what I knew about Tiny Desk I thought it was just like a set or something, but you're actually just in a huge office building. Like the NPR news room is r...

Saturday Morning Qs

When I was a kid, it was a special treat to go to the used CD store. There were a couple in town, and I remember spending hours browsing through the shelves. Usually, I was only going by what the packaging could tell me: a CD that was several dollars cheaper than others by the same artist hinted that it wouldn't be quite as good, maybe an EP or bootleg instead of a major work. A full-length album with only 5 or 6 songs on it was a beckoning mystery: where did those long songs go? And of cours...

The boys are back from their first European tour and are headed to the midwest to start their tour of the states. Most east coast tour runs for us have started in the midwest. We are very familiar with this snowy drive. You can see our old van here. We nicknamed it "Bertha". It was an old 1994 Ford Club Wagon XLT, similar to an Econoline "Free Candy" van (but cooler). We drove her across the country more times than I can count. It had hilarious quirks like the steering wheel had to be almost ...

August Newsletter: The Chase

I woke up at 4 am this morning from a strange, vivid dream; the dream, plus the fevered interpretation my mind gave it in the following minutes, transformed alchemically into a Good Idea. How Good it was, I wasn’t sure - I didn’t want to follow all the paths it opened up, wanted to preserve the not-yet-activated chambers of my brain for a few more hours of sleep - but I did want to write it down. Where was my phone? It’s always by my bed, but this morning it wasn’t. I got up and walke...

The boys continue their European tour and move on to the Le Guess Who fest in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Utrecht is probably my favorite European city. It has all of the charm of Amsterdam (canals, colorful rows of homes, pedestrian/biker friendly) but without the insane amount of tourists. It's a quiet little college town with tons of art and things to do. I would live there in a heartbeat.

We played the Le Guess Who festival which is similar to SXSW where up and coming artists play c...

The boys head off to BBC and Rough Trade to showcase their talents in the Big Apple (Ben). I don't remember much about the radio show other than I think we played pretty well. The BBC studio is pretty nuts though. It's massive and gorgeous and most likely extremely expensive. It was definitely a milestone to play there.

The rough trade show I remember almost nothing about.

SD: Visiting the BBC Maida Vale studios was definitely a memorable experience! I remember seeing photos linin...

This week the boys head to London to start their first Euro Tour!

This trip was when things started to feel pretty “real” for me. Getting to travel abroad to play music was always a dream that I thought I’d never get to live out so this one felt really good.

Seth: It was a long flight to the U.K. but I think it only really hit us once we were pulled out of the custom's queue to what Andrew termed the "playpen." This roped-off area was where everyone with unu...
