SD: From Porto, we flew to Berlin because it was cheaper to get a Ryan Air flight than a couple hotel rooms along the way. I remember wondering if we were getting kicked from the flight because our boarding passes didn't have seats, and every agent we talked to delayed the process up until we were actually on the plane. Essentially we just awkwardly waited along the aisles until everyone else was seated then we filled in the four empty seats left scattered inside the plane.

Once we were...

SD: From Barcelona we went back up north to Nimes, France to play the This Is Not A Love Song festival. It took place in this large venue complex with multiple rooms kinda like a movie theater. We loaded in our gear then played some ping pong before our early show. I remember watching Kamasi Washington's band warm up when we were setting up. We checked out the city a bit before turning in for the night. The Roman coliseum was especially cool lit up at night.

We set course for Switzerlan...

SD: So straight from the East Coast, we flew to Amsterdam with a layover in Dublin. We must have been worried about losing money on another Europe tour, cause we opted for the heavily discounted flight with a 10 hour layover in Dublin's airport. Needless to say it was kinda miserable. I remember for the first few hours we scoped the airport for the best place to lay down, but the best available option were these circular padded cubby holes that we all deemed way less comfortable than they loo...

SD: At the end of May 2016, We played a run of shows on the east coast on our way to Europe for a longer tour. Our first show was at Grimey's record store in Nashville to promote the release of TOD. We crashed at Andrew's friend Mikey's house where we all played Super Smash Brothers and chatted before we turned-in for the night. We played a few songs between the rows of records at Grimey's, and I got the chance to catch up with some family that lived nearby.

It took us a day or two to d...

November Newsletter: Brotherhood of Common Life

“The person who truly knows himself seems common in his own eyes, and the good things that others may say about him do not change the way he thinks about himself,” wrote Thomas Á Kempis in the 1400s. It’s easy to see the word “common” and read behind it “vulgar - distasteful - contemptuous - unworthy,” and maybe that’s the whole problem. This month I’ve been living a common life, days full of irritating little stops and starts, different cycles to be dealt with, emails and ...

SD: I won't be able to add too much this episode, for these were a couple of somewhat last-minute shows added after I already booked a minivan to move from Brooklyn to Seattle. Luckily Ethan could quickly transition back to bass for a bit, and the boys put on a killer three-piece show. I made it to the West Coast in three brutal days of driving a rented minivan filled to the brim with everything I owned. The lush green landscape of the Pacific Northwest was a such welcome sight after the long...

SD: In late March we made our way down south to play several shows on the west coast. I think the first day was a straight travel day to Redding CA. I remember we all played 20 questions in the van on the way down to curb the boredom. About 10 hours in things got heated when the guys got mad that I picked something outside the traditional three states of matter, but thankfully we were almost there. We found a pretty sweet mexican spot on the side of a gas station for dinner, then settled in t...

You Heard It Here First: Live Album This Winter!

Hi all,

We are pleased to announce...an announcement! Tomorrow we'll be officially announcing the upcoming release of the live album "Faces From The Masquerade", capturing performances from our 2022 tour. We'll also be dropping a track from the album. Since track rollouts can sometimes result in an awkward gap in communication, we figured we'd unwrap the Christmas present a day early for you. These tracks capture some of our best-ever shows, and we're excited for you to experience them,...

SD: Shortly after SXSW, we set off around the Pacific Northwest to play a few shows with Thao & the Get Down Stay Down. Thao had also started their musical journey in Virginia and even went to the same college as me and Will several years before. Their band migrated to the West coast and made name for themselves touring the states. I think our booking agent noticed the similarities and got them to agree to have us on a few shows.

Our first show was in Portland Oregon at the Wonder B...

Saturday Morning Qs

https://open.spotify.com/episode/1nrL4gduoOmjD6TE8rj03C?si=d2d81c9a82904e12 I listened to a podcast this morning with Susan Rogers, a producer who has recently been writing about the psychology of music. Here, she talks about visualizing while you're listening to music, and how different people intuitively go different places: imagining the band playing, going into your own memo...

Death Cab For Cutie cover: We Looked Like Giants

Hyped to finally share this! Death Cab was gracious enough to contact us for a cover in honor of the 20th anniversary of Transatlanticism. We took it as an opportunity to get back in the studio for the first time in...3 years? Everything went very well and we're all extremely pleased with the result. I used the bassline from "The Twist" as inspiration for boogieing up our interpretation of it.

It will also be on a 7", alongisde an excellent cover from the Beths! Check the full package o...

October Newsletter: Everything's Fine

The other day a friend of mine with long COVID wrote me telling me his frustration with where he was at, with his expectations for his body versus what it was able to do, with realizing it was Sunday and he’d spent another week in a haze. “Objectively I’m doing fine, it’s just disappointing where ‘fine’ is,” he said.

I did something dangerous last month, which was to fall into a flow. Get up, jog, breakfast, meditate, kitchen work, drive to studio, five hours of work, driv...

AK: SXSW, baby! Things were getting wild and we were set to play 10 shows in 5 days. 2 a day! The sets were short but the heat was strong and the chaotic nature of SXSW really takes it out of you. Musicians (at least at our level at the time and below) were treated like prize ponies; moved from one venue to another in tight shifts where curious onlookers would wait. The green rooms were small, the backline gear was minimal and shoddy at best. I remember seeing one drummer miss a hailed cab on...

Studio archive: Sept 29, Jam #3

Hello all, Archive Sundays and our newsletter will launch a bit later this month, as I return to sentient life after a month in the studio. In the interim, here's the last thing we did in the studio, a mellow jam with some neat nooks and crannies along the way.

Andrew: drums

Seth: bass

Ethan: guitar

Will: Moog

John McRae: Theravox

P.S. October should see a few special projects from us get unveiled to the public, so stay tuned!

The Car Seat Boys head to Amsterdam!

AK: Amsterdam has always been a blast to perform in. For whatever reason we typically have had multiple days in the city which includes a days off to explore. The days off really add to the enjoyment. Most nights Seth and I would venture off to buy some weed brownies or some joints at a coffee shop (what they call weed shops there). Seth had a friend who would show us around and we'd end up smoking a joint by the canal on some dark street....
