Awkward Rhymes, Pt. 1

Sometimes the best photos from a photo shoot are the out takes. Here's a whole set of out takes from a recent shoot with one of your favorite models.

Fretless!

I finally had the pleasure of meeting and working with the wonderful Jordan River , who, in just a couple years, has created a stunning library of content. We spent an afternoon experimenting with colored lights and having a grand time!

All in all, I think my shoot with Jordan River was more than successful. We continued to shoot other set-ups for another hour or so before she hit the road, but I'll share those at another time.

What do you think of Jordan? Are you sick of these color experiments yet? Please leave comments below, and thank you, as always, for making my work possible! Your sponsorship makes these images come to life!

Proud of her backside, I had her take a few last shots focusing on her asset.

This reminded me of all the crucifix art work I made as a college student when dealing with my Catholic roots.

I finally had her throw on a body suit to take a few last shots, simply so we could have at least a few "safe" shots to share on more public social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram. Unfortunately, as a creative person these days, you have to think in the manner.

How do you feel about changing your artwork in this way? Is it wrong? Is it selling out?

I teased her that this was for Fourth of July with the red-white-blue motif.

This is another favorite of mine, with her hair looking like sumi writing. What do you think about this shot? Too abstract?

I love how it feels like her skin is melting here in the light. It's like lava.

The process was a bit different for her, as well, and the popping of the light behind her wasn't something she was necessarily used to. But she was a trooper and didn't complain, she just wanted to get better, and she did.

Not wanting to get stuck with the same light in every photo, I changed things up and inserted a strobe into the mix of hot lights. The process was the same, but the results were very different. I've almost got this process figured out, which bothers me because I like figuring it out new every time.

I really like these. It's as if she's sitting in a frozen-over lake. I just think it's a cool effect. What are your thoughts?

Not bad at all. What do you think?

These finally started looking really cool. The only way I could describe them was "they look like playing cards."

I've still been uncomfortable getting the top/bottom reflections to look good, taking the advice of my friend and talented photographer Susan Nason. I definitely think these were the most successful to date.

This was a raw shot that I loved, but it was far too blurry to do anything with. I include it here only to show that the process is not exact. The lens I was shooting with is a 50mm f1.4, so with all her movement, I always had to keep refocusing, thus her hand here is in focus and nothing else is. But the shape and pose and light is too good not to share, no matter how soft the image is.

What are your thoughts on image focus? Is it an absolute rule to having things tack-sharp, or a...

I like this shot a lot, too. I love capturing a moment, which I suppose all photography is about, but especially when action is taking place. You can't stage or recreate an image like this 100%, and I love the fact that such moments are fleeting, like all the good times in life. Photography is meant to capture and preserve those times for later, and I think this is a decent example of that concept. What are your thoughts on the matter?

This is another favorite from that day. Most, if not all, of these images are uncropped, with only the most minor of touch-ups. None of the lighting or effects is done in post production, they're all in-camera here. What do you think of this technique? What would you like to see done differently?

Seriously, her hips and torso are just...damn. What do you think??

Fretless, Pt. 8

This is one of my favorites from the set-up. Not only is her pose and the reflection of herself intriguing elements, but the shine off her blue skin and the subtle pink of the reflection inside her arm. It's always the little things that catch my eye.

She had never seen anyone with the lighting set-up I had created, nor had she seen people use diffusers and reflectors in front of the lens before. She loved the effect more than I did, and I found amusement that something so simple could astonish her so greatly.

She looked like Lou Ferrigno's Incredible Hulk here, or so the comic nerd in me thought and liked.

Her torso was simply incredible, and she refused to admit that my praise of her fitness was genuine. She blushed repeatedly as I heaped praise on her muscle tone and hourglass shape.

Having never worked with her before, I made sure to ask what her boundaries were. Finally coming out of her creative shell with a little experience under her belt, she confessed that her boundaries were growing and expanding depending on who she worked with, and really didn't offer me any restrictions. Her only concern was her face, which she said had "an ability to ruin images." I told her she was crazy but assured her I'd try to work around that small, unimportant feature as I rolled my eyes t...

Jordan was on her drive back to Portland, OR, after having spent yet another successful and creative trip to down the West Coast to Los Angeles. I was to be her last shoot of the trip, with the rest of the return trip dedicated to visiting with family and friends. She was immediately sweet and humble, conveying the nervous, fun, eager insecurity of someone who is still having a lot of fun with the new experiences that this odd career has provided for her.

As I practiced with the exposures for ...
