When I had arrived at her college apartment, there was a random guy sleeping on the sofa and liquor bottles everywhere. A typical college flop house. As we shot that morning, her three roommates walked around us hung over in their pajamas, commenting positive things as they passed. I found it rather amusing.

Usually for a test shoot, a first-time model picks something conservative to wear in order to test the waters. But not Jackie. She immediately looked at the bodysuit that I had, which has been used far too often, and said she'd like to squeeze it on. I knew right away she was going to be refreshingly openminded.

I had reluctantly put up a casting call on my Instagram account looking for fresh faces to work with. After a year of having some of my worst experiences with new models (essay coming soon about that), I was surprised to find Jackie, an eager college student. From her messages, she seemed as fun and sweet as she was lovely, and so I figured she was definitely worth a test shoot.

As we were getting ready to leave, she slipping her underwear back on for one last shot, knowing she would feel more comfortable sharing such a thing with her audience. I think this shoot was a great experience for both of us, and it felt like a turning point in both our styles and aesthetics.

As the last of the sun began to fade, I had her stand up and wave this transparent sheet in the wind. She was nervous about standing up naked and having me shoot her directly, but I assured her that what I had in mind wouldn't show anything. It wasn't until I showed her the image on the back of the camera that she relaxed and was able to allow herself to move freely, knowing that her vulva wouldn't appear on any of the shots.

Though she had never posed nude before, she seemed pretty confident. Several times I had to tell her to tuck in her nipples, which I knew she didn't want to be showing, and she laughed because she hadn't noticed, being comfortable with me and the situation.

Chase confessed that this was her first shoot topless in her life, and I was both surprised and honored that she would trust me so much, especially since we had only met moments before. I suppose I needed to finally get used to this odd new bit of fame I was gaining from my fast-growing Instagram account. She had seen my work on there and reached out to me to shoot. I guess she knew what she was signing up for, but it was still odd to me.

I've never been a fan of "boy-cut" women's underwear, or much lacey stuff, so when she joyfully offered to wear a pair she had brought, I reluctantly agreed. Still, she looked incredible, so I figured I'd shoot a few things for her desires, then have her shoot some for my style. It's always good to collaborate and compromise, since these photos are as much for the model as they are for the photographer.
Having known that Chase had been on many runways and shot many high-end fashion lines, I also didn't expect her to be so open to my style of working. She didn't even blink when I nervously asked if she'd wear that knitted coverup topless, and she said she'd even be open to trying some nude work as long as nothing was showing. Had I just won the lottery?

This was my first time meeting Chase, and she wasn't at all what I expected. She always looked so serious in her photos, so intense and intimidating. In reality, Chase was a surfer girl, a beach bum, speaking with a slow drawl that implied she was just chill. She likes to drink beer, watch and play sports, and just liked having a good time.
