62 - The Sushi Dat Would Have to Wait

<Gimme a minute - Understudy 12:07>

Well, shit. I looked around for Fursona, but the kangaroo was already hopping toward another building. We’d crammed an Episode between Superpower Ethics and Intro to Drama before, but…

<What’s going on? What time? - Understudy 12:08>

<Multiple burglaries. All across the University district - Honeycomb 12:08>

<Should be kicking off soon. No casting call yet, but any minute. - H...

61 - Cramming

“How can time move so fast and slow at the same time,” I muttered to myself, turning my phone screen off.

“What?” Su-Bin grabbed my math paper and shook her head. “No, bring the X across, not the Y. The Y’s got exponents, and it’ll go negative, but if you isolate it, you can start breaking it down.”

The late November weather was so much colder than Riverside had ever been. Outside the Student Union Building’s windows, a near-blizzard whipped snow up from...

I Need Your Help!

Hello, readers! I have a problem.

Backstory to the problem: I had 53 chapters of backlog when I launched MGU on RR and Patreon. I've managed to write through chapter 65 (66 today), but I'm going to need to start cutting down on my posting to keep ahead. I can pretty consistently write 8k to 10k words of this story a week, which right now adds up to 4 or 5 chapters.

So, would you prefer four-to-five-thousand-word posts (about 2 current chapters each) on Monday/Thursday? Or wo...

60 - Got a Hold of Me Again

I woke up in a room…somewhere—I didn’t know where, but there weren’t any windows, and a fluorescent light hummed on the ceiling. My arms weren’t tied to the chair or anything, but the door was locked when I checked it. I banged on it a little. “Hey! Hey, I’m in here!”

No one answered.

I wasn’t in my Lab Assistant Panic Costume anymore; Tails sat on the floor next to my chair, which I flopped back into. If the villains had won, I was their prisoner under the TUEAS...

59 - Dark Magical Girl

“Thanks for bringing my bot back,” the mysterious Dark Girl said. As she stepped over Tearjerker, I got a good look at her. Just like the goth villainess on the ground, she was dressed in fishnets, black, and a healthy dose of mascara. But instead of black, black, and more black, a reddish glow surrounded her like a halo around the sun.

I stepped back, away from the newcomer. Springlock did, too. Both bots were much worse for wear after their duel with each other. My bot’...

58 - An Inkling of a Plan

“Do you want the good news or the bad news first, Understudy?” Rocko asked.

“Good news, please.” I tore my eyes from the camera drone. Sara-N-Dipity was still up, too. According to Milo, she couldn’t fight her way out of a wet paper bag, but she kept predicting the pursuing bot’s every move. It was searching for her in a wind tunnel lab in the Applied Sciences wing.

“The System’s willing to let you swap out Rainy Day for Lab Assistant Panic. The bad news is you’r...

57 - What To Do?

At least three robots. Two minor-league villains—and not Theseus, but ones with experience. And possibly more villains and robots downstairs.

Versus…

My hero team, but down a front-liner and the Genius who might be able to counter the bots.

It reminded me of my second battle with LABRAT. I hadn’t had a good counter for the machine then, either. Hell, I hadn’t had a good counter for LABRAT until…after LABRAT wasn’t an issue anymore. The robot pushed and b...

56 - TUEAS Dogpile

[Casting Call]

[Episode: TUEAS Dogpile - PG-13]

[Role: Dog in the Fight! Do you accept the role? (Yes/No)]

[Role Focus: Badass > Flamboyance]

The tunnel curved ahead, and I slowed to read the [Casting Call]. Now that I’d thought about it, it’d be pretty stupid to run toward a fight when an Episode was going without accepting the...

55 - Behind Me

I breathed a sigh of relief as I sat down next to Fursona and Gourmet. It’d been close, but I didn’t think Flare and The Crumb saw me sneaking away from their conversation. I settled back into my armchair and looked at the team. “What’d I miss?”

“None of us hate dogpiling,” Theseus said.

Fursona nodded. “Yep. Fair tactic. The reason most heroes and villains don’t use it must be growth-related. If it takes Stell-Luna 6 attacks to knock someone out of the fight, sh...

FANFIC: The Jumper

Holy moley! I got fanfic. It's from one of my beta readers, and in the interest of not monetizing fanfic, I'm making it public, but I'm super-excited about it! Real chapter is still coming a bit later today. I'm also switching to a more morning-oriented chapter release schedule (at least my time).

Juni—The Jumper—Marteni loved her superpowers.

Were they powerful? No. Would she ever rise from the bottom tier of superhero shows–-the little league? Also, no....

54 - Potential Informants

“The rebuild process in Yorkton received a huge boost from Longshore Construction’s ongoing feud with Brightwing Industries. Both companies went into hiring frenzies for the Manhattan Proj—whoops, the Manhattan Island Restabilization Act’s Construction-Led Enterprise, or MIRACLE. At one point, almost a tenth of the megapolis’s population was hired by the two companies or their subcontractors…”

A yawn escaped my mouth before I could stop myself, but no one noticed. Avan was...

53 - [Investigative Casting Call]

“Investigative Episodes are usually how superheroes start Episodes. Most of the time, the villain is the one starting stuff.”

“Yeah, that makes sense.” Fursona sprawled across the chaise lounge, and I thanked Fang Swee’s power for giving me that particular piece of furniture in my secret base. “But not always.”

“Right, not always. Sometimes, villains need a solution before they start something. So heroes can start up Investigative Episodes. They’re usual...

52 - Tele-Portal

I felt like I was flying.

The monorail from TU to Mid-Town snaked between, around, and even throughbuildings packed in so tightly they made the canyon-like streets Mom had driven the station wagon through seem open and airy. The train cars seemed to ride on air; I’d hardly felt them accelerate, and buildings flashed by with barely a bump.

<Hey, Understudy. Idea. - Fursona 9:15>

<We’ve been trying to win Episodes. We should focus on our styl...

51 - Build Me Up

Bianca was hot.

After we went to bed, I’d spent too much time scooching away from her under the blankets. That girl was a furnace! But eventually, she’d cornered me. With nowhere to go, I’d fallen asleep perched precariously on the edge of the bed, her arm around me.

Which was also how I woke up, much more sober than the night before.

“Shit,” I whispered. We'd finished the bottle after the next Episode—a minor league one from the Second Power War because we both ...

50 - You're Sitting With Me Tonight, Right?

I got my first chance to play a lead character during my senior year at Riverside High—Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I practiced my lines for hours at home until Mom and Tails both begged me to stop. I’d go out on Episodes and run through the words silently. And on Opening Night, I couldn’t eat anything, even though I knew it’d mess with my energy. I paced the green room behind the auditorium’s stage, back and forth, back and forth. Then…I threw up. And after, I felt bett...

49 - Neutral Fields

“Today’s lesson is a little different. Traditionally, we’d save Neutral Fields for later in the semester—“

“Wait, this isn’t a year-long course?” Gourmet blurted, standing up from her La-Z Boy as Doctor Jackson stopped to stare at her.

“Just a semester. Normally, Neutral Fields would be later, but after the TUSSA/SSS incident at the job fair three weeks ago, the other professors and I agreed to move it up. Neutral Fields are critical for hero/villain dynamics to ...

48 - Up the Waterspout

“…went up the spout again!” I popped into my Rainy Day costume and nodded at the ceiling. “Ready!”

[Rejuvenation Activated: Hit Points 5/7]

In the few seconds before the try-out started, as the pillars and boxes started shimmering from holographic overlays and the room turned into a mock-up of Mission Control, I devised a plan. I had a massive advantage over other would-be interns; I’d seen ‘Missile Man and the Helmettes Take Over Missile Co...

47 - I Still Need an Internship

I’d never, ever, been so glad to see the police.

We found Tokyexico City Police Department cruiser parked at a parking lot entrance just outside Roth Arena. Flare had tried to run twice; Fursona had his arm in a death grip to prevent another escape attempt, but he wasn’t exactly cooperating. Lady Lockless wasn’t resisting, shockingly. Instead, she wouldn’t stop trying to make conversation, and I was not in the mood for casually chatting with a villainess about ...

46 - The [Escape Room]

First color first, then second last,

Fifth third, third fifth, fourth stands steadfast,

Seventh comes after its mother and before its father,

And sixth is second to last still, the first and fifth’s daughter.

“Red is first, then violet because blue and red make violet and violet’s their kid,” I said. We’d been puzzling for a while—I’d have killed for a paper and pen—but we almost had it. “Blue is next because fifth ...

45 - Lady Lockless

“Was this place designed by architecture students?” Fursona complained as we wandered the halls after Flare. I couldn’t help but agree with them. The halls weren’t even straight lines. Instead, they seemed to weave around office spaces, zig-zagging nonsensically around the building. Luckily, the place was signed well—otherwise, I could see the professors getting lost on the way to their offices.

We stopped outside Office Suite 765. Fursona fidgeted on their paws, hand inches f...

The camera drone’s lens stared me in the face. That’s the only reason I didn’t slam a hand into the shelf. “This was all a fake-out?”

“In fencing class, we call that a feint,” Fursona said. “But this one seems weird. Why would she tell us where she’s going?”

“Lady Lockless doesn’t care if you know,” one Rent-a-Hench said. “She’s miles ahead of you already.”

He started to stand up, but his friend pulled him back down. “J, if you figh...

The letters spun as I ran and Fursona hopped toward the door. The back of my neck prickled with [Inkling’s]aftereffects, even though we were between Acts. I was torn between staying and hunting internships and leaving, but the line for Tele-Portal was still brutal and we’d talked to everyone else I cared about. Besides, Lady Lockless was out t...

We dove into the maze of booths on the court. I could practically feel all the powers around us; it was like a tickle on my skin or the ozone smell of lightning in my nose. I could tell Fursona felt it too. They seemed twitchy inside their suit, and their head kept looking from one booth to another.

The excitement and energy in the air felt fantastic. It almost pushed the pain in my heart away. It almost made me forget about Peter for a bit.

Almost.

I awoke to a horrid buzzing and a slightly sour scent in my bedroom. My head pounded like it had after drinking with Bianca, and the buzzing wouldn’t stop. I reached for my phone. Had I set an alarm?

No. I had no new messages.

Which meant it was one of the intercoms. My phone said…9:43? I’d barely slept. Every time I shut my eyes, I saw the bur...

I stared at my laptop’s screen, at the black box where he was supposed to be. My throat was tight, and my stomach rolled. The little clock read 8:49, which meant he was twenty minutes late. 38 - Something to Drinky-Drink

I woke up the following day to bright, bright sunlight. The alarm clock read 10:30. Algebra started at 10:00. I must’ve really needed my sleep, because I slept clean through the alarm.

I groaned. Why couldn’t I have slept through Ilneat Relations? I actually needed algebra classes. Su-Bin could only help me so much; if I wasn’t in class, I’d miss something important. I’d have to email the professor and ask if he’d send me the slides for today’s lesson. View Post
