Good Morning, Vietnam
Added 2023-12-26 00:11:46 +0000 UTCAs some of you know, I’ve been a little quiet lately due to my holiday travels.
I've been all over Southeast Asia but my trip this time around finally brought me to the much-fetishized Vietnam for the very first time. My escape from the harsh winter back home to the country’s instagrammable beaches in the south was less productive than I’d hoped for my writing, but full of inspiration for possible future works. It's a beautiful and fascinating place.
Vietnam is a dynamism of a rapidly developing economy with people clamoring to catch up. Unlike the Thais, the Vietnamese have a difficult and contentious past with Westerners — first, the French colonizers, whose influence still extends to food and architecture, to the complex relationship with America and the GIs during the war. Though so many were welcoming, resentment still lurked in the local smiling veneer, simmering low from the desperation to make money off of dumb foreign tourists.
The women, timid, yet sensual, submissive, but passionate. Most are fit with pleasingly lithe bodies; some very pretty. Rice hats are still a thing in the sun-baked rural coastal areas I visited. To me, anyway, Vietnamese sounds very similar to Thai, a jungly language that alternates between shrill pitches and guttural tones; surely the most pleasing when moaned and grunted out while being pounded raw during sex.
Not that I’d know from personal experience or anything.
I'm eager to go home and pick up my writing in earnest. Still, as I stare at the ocean horizon one last time, I feel like a part of me will be left behind in Vietnam after I’m gone, one way or another.
Happy Holidays to you all!
