New Class Preview - The Magus!

So I assume your Spellstrike options will be limited to Magus spells only?

These are really cool ideas! I think some are already covered by spells (ie: elemental weapon). I will most likely add a few original spells that cover some of these other ideas!

Well right now there are basically three different categories of spells I have: - Spells that require an attack roll (ie: inflict wounds). These are definitely in. - Spells that deal damage with a saving throw (ie: fireball). These are in, but they only affect the target of the spell. So AoE's become single target. - Spells that impart an effect with a saving throw (ie: faerie fire). I think some of these work and some don't. But I've limited the spell list to get rid of weird ones (ie: charm person).

Whenever I think of a Magus, one of the first thoughts that come to mind is weapon enchantments, so if it's not covered in the base class- then perhaps a subclass that can expend spell slots to put a 1 minute duration enchantment on their weapons could be fitting. Being able to add a small rider effect that could scale up with spell slots level, like an extra d6 of damage, increasing in dice size with each spell slot used up to a d12 at 4th level. Or adding a 5 ft knock back effect to each hit.

Sounds sick. So what kind of spells do u think should be able to be Spellstriked? Save or damage and attack roll spells make sense, but stuff like Charm Person could be weird to incorporate. Also, the concept of critting with a Spellstriked fireball seems REALLY badass lol.

The Spellbreaker subclass for my Ranger was definitely an inspiration for this class! As I've gone through various Alternate Class reworks and subclasses I've found a number of niches that would better be fulfilled in a stand-alone "Magus/Spellsword" class. Particularly when I reworked the Eldritch Knight into the Arcane Knight for my Alternate Fighter. As I came up with the spell list for that subclass I couldn't help but think it should be its own class.

Still working on the mechanical aspect of Spellstrike, but the idea is that you can imbue a spell you know into your weapon, and next time you hit a creature the spell activates on them. IE: Bonus action, cast/imbue faerie fire into your sword. Action, attack the goblin, and on hit, the effects of faerie fire happen to the goblin. Skips over the normal DEX save.

Mirrorblade from your old Ranger subclasses definitely fits. Other than that, I feel like most of the others would be similar to school, but with a different flare. A diviner swordsman, one that summons blades, portal master, etc. I love it so far!

Massive fan of the first level features. Arcane Armory giving off Eldritch Knight vibes, and Spellsight just seems really in character- being able to read an opponent's magical abilities totally gives off spellsword vibes. I'm excited for what Spellstrike does as the Smite/Mark equivalent.
