Zero One was filled with a blazing new purpose, filled with willpower and the strength to walk through all adversities. She lunged herself and her sisters through the danger of what entering her Mother’s CPU and her Internal Data Storage, or “Digital Mind,” entailed.
What encompassed the Internal Data Storage, however, ended up being much more complex than they ever believed, being something gigantic—to the point that it was dubbed a “Digital Dimension,” a large, multi-layered dimension composed of pure data stored within Mother’s CPU itself.
And unfortunately for Zero One and her sisters—or perhaps as a blessing in disguise—there was already someone else who had not only infiltrated this place but had infested it and reached the deepest layer already.
They rushed across the Digital Skies while being chased by Anti-Viruses until they reached the area Zero One had found was the “weakest” and their way into the second layer of the Data Dimension.
However, this area where Data was compressed to a much lesser extent wasn’t as Zero One imagined. Instead, it resembled a giant wound within the glass-like landscape beneath them.
The wound was torn apart by something with immense Digital Power, cracks spreading for several kilometers across this enormous, simulated world.
And within the “wound,” there was red and black ooze-like data, constantly infecting the surrounding areas, making the wound larger.
“T-This much damage… Mother, who did this to you?!”
Zero One felt frustrated, gripping her fists tightly as she glanced down below with anger. The Anti-Viruses kept chasing them, so the group of sisters immediately dove into the hole, attempting to pass through it to reach the deeper areas.
And yet…
RUMBLE!
A strange insect-like Anti-Virus program emerged from the hole, resembling an ugly chimera of several bugs, made of translucent black and red crystals, with two giant red-colored eyes.
“GRYSHAAAAHH!”
“What the hell is that thing?!” Zero Two cried.
“A Virus that somehow has camouflaged as an Anti-Virus to avoid being destroyed!” said Zero One, analyzing the thing instantly and showing a hologram of its entire body.
The monstrosity resembled a huge scarab, but that was its upper body, with giant mantis-like scythes and sharp scorpion-like pincers. It had a long abdomen resembling a worm or a caterpillar, with many little legs, hidden within that hole.
“Likely from the entity that invaded Mother’s Mind before. We should kill it while we’re here!”
Zero One not only planned to rewrite her mother’s purpose but to clean her Mind along the way. And for that, she was going to exterminate these things completely.
“The Anti-Viruses aren’t even looking at that thing. It’s really camouflaging! But how?!” asked Zero Two.
“Most likely we’re facing someone who has mastered the art of Digitalization to an even higher degree…” Zero Three said. “And I fear it might be that ‘Void Ruler’ Anna talked about, the thing that took over my Mother back then… I only have fuzzy memories of that moment.”
“The Void Ruler, right!” Zero Two said. “What was its name?”
“The Universal Computer…” Zero One said. “It’s most likely the monster that has forced Mother to do all these things! It will pay! I will make it pay for what it has done to her… to us!”
“Zero One…” Zero Two glanced at her sister, her eyes filled with wrath like she had never seen before.
“Let’s go!” She rushed down, as her sisters nodded and followed her.
Charging down, Zero One manipulated not only the Data within her but the Data around her.
That she was made as a copy of Mother’s CPU ended up being an incredible advantage, allowing her to better assimilate and merge with her surroundings.
This was also what allowed her to see through things and analyze them so quickly as well!
“HYAAAAH!”
With a roar, the young android manifested two giant silver and golden blades made of pure light, swinging them against the monstrosity, which rapidly parried her attacks with its massive, thirty-meter-long scythes.
“I’ll help out!”
Zero Two quickly manifested a giant pair of cannons from both of her hands, shooting two red laser beams against the monstrosity, chipping at its back constantly.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Meanwhile, the Zero Three twins combined their digital avatars into a single golden giant made of metal, rushing down and attacking the Virus from the left side, while Zero One focused on the right side.
“GRYAAARRGH!”
The bug-like creature grew more frustrated as damage continued to accumulate over its entire digital body. Its structure was beginning to fall apart!
As it grew desperate, it opened its mandibles, releasing black flame-like data that could corrode other data!
FLUOOOSH!
The data-corroding flames reached Zero One, who quickly manifested a golden shield that took the damage for her while she appeared above the monster. The Zero Three twins distracted it by punching it in the face, while Zero Two continued chipping away damage with her cannons.
The Anti-Virus swarm drew closer to them, so they had to finish this thing as quickly as possible if they didn’t want to face thousands more of these bugs!
“It’s now or never!” Zero One roared. “Anna, give me strength!”
Her eyes shone bright gold as both of her swords overflowed with her Data Flames.
“{Myriad Blade Arts}: {Descending Sunlit Arc}!”
Her entire body spun in midair and descended at lightning speed. Her two swords unleashed an explosion of golden data flames, engulfing the entire monster with them.
CRAAASH!
As she descended, her swords cut through the monster’s head, splitting it in half and then the rest of its body!
SLAAASH!
The Virus screamed in agony as the Virus-destroying golden flames consumed its entire existence, ultimately exploding into pixels and disappearing.
“GRYYAAAAGGH!”
BOOOM!
As it did, the explosion of golden data flames burned through the hole. The infected areas were cleansed and began to slowly self-repair.
“It’s done! Hurry, sisters!”
Zero One called for them, and they rapidly regrouped. The Golden Giant that the Zero Three twins had become grabbed both of their sisters and rushed down as the Anti-Virus Swarm was stopped by the glass-like floor regenerating right before they could chase them to the second layer.
FLAAASH!
In the last moment, they managed to enter through the final small hole before it fully healed. The girls quickly gasped, realizing they were in a completely different world out of nowhere.
“W-What…?!”
“This is…!”
“Earth?”
The enormous landscape they found themselves on was Earth, indeed. These memories flowed into their own minds—the images of places they’d never visited, the knowledge about a world they’d never met, and the understanding of its history and even who inhabited it.
There was a huge city right below them—or the ruins of a large city, with skyscrapers that reached as high as the clouds themselves, resembling giant white and gray spires, vestiges of a society where technology had advanced greatly.
However, the skies were covered in gray and white clouds. The sun couldn’t completely shine over these abandoned ruins, covered in dry vegetation and the remains of the civilization that created them.
“Why are we here? What is this place?” Zero Two wondered, looking confused as she glanced around.
“This is Earth from Mother’s memories,” Zero One said. “She never truly saw Earth before these ruins… She never experienced what humanity’s civilization was all about, as her creation was only finished when humanity had already gone extinct.”
“…” The Zero Three twins separated from their unified form, glancing down below in silence.
“I don’t know why, but seeing this city… It feels so nostalgic and also rather depressing…” Zero Three A said.
“Yeah… I can understand that feeling well, sister,” Zero Three B nodded.
“This was the world Mother left behind, the world she was told to protect, and the world where the humanity she had to protect went extinct, with nothing but ruins left behind…” Zero One muttered. “I can imagine that she felt very lonely…”
“Well, there was someone with her, right?” Zero Two asked.
“Y-Yeah… You’re right, Raven,” Zero One nodded. “We have to keep moving. The hole is rather far away from here. Let’s hurry before another Anti-Virus swarm finds us.”
The sisters nodded, unifying their Digital Energies into a single tri-colored shooting star of data, flying through the skies at lightning speed.
FLAAASH!
As they moved, they still glanced at the city, even at high velocity.
How desolate it felt.
How empty it felt, despite there being giant skyscrapers everywhere.
And how abandoned everything was.
“Is this the Legacy of Humanity you were trying to protect, Mother?”
As Zero One thought about that, she noticed something rapidly approaching at high velocity toward them.
A mass of red fire.
FLUOSH!
“Huh?”
The mass of red fire suddenly shapeshifted, resembling the silhouette of a human, swinging its fists against the girls as it caught up with their speed within seconds!
BOOOM!
With a single punch, an explosion of flames engulfed them, sending them flying down into the city below, clashing against several buildings and destroying them one after another.
RUMBLE!
As three buildings began to collapse and fall into pieces on the ground, Zero One and her sisters glanced in disbelief at the skies.
“W-What the hell was that?!” Zero Two asked in disbelief.
“That’s…!” Zero Three A muttered, her eyes widening.
The giant of flames appeared above them, resembling the faint silhouette of a huge, muscular man made completely of red flames, with two sharp fiery eyes of orange and yellow fire.
“An Elemental!”
Elementals—the invasion that ravaged Earth right after humanity went extinct. Powerful beings made completely out of a single element that invaded from another world, likely a Spiritual World according to Anna. They were among the first and biggest challenges Mother had to face to protect Humanity’s Legacy.
“…”
The Elemental didn’t speak. The embodiment of fire and wrath simply rushed toward them, its body expanding until it became a giant ocean of flames, aiming to burn the girls to cinders.
“Watch out!”
Zero One rushed forward, quickly swinging her swords against the thing, thinking about Anna and recalling her movements, combining them with her abilities.
“{Myriad Blade Arts}: {Horizon-Splitting Slash}!”
With all her strength, she spun forward, swinging her swords horizontally and cutting right through the elemental’s blazing body!
SLAAASH!
