ALMOST FAMOUS - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to the Theatrical Release of Almost Famous, the winner of this month's spinning wheel! I had a lot of fun watching this one! It has such a great cast, and I didn't even put it together until after the movie that the actor who plays Russell (Billy Crudup) also played Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen! Enjoy!

When it comes to reactors for whom English is clearly not their first language, I much prefer Bissflix, MJoy4Fun, The Homies, and Duaffy (though she stopped doing reactions due to burnout; I'm still hoping she comes back eventually 🙏).

Happy New Year to you and your family Addie. 🎊

Excellent movie I hadn't seen in a long time, definitely worth the spin-win. 👍 An interesting aside is, while the movie is fiction, it's also quasi-autobiographical and based on experiences the writer/director Cameron Crowe had when he was a young writer for Rolling Stone and Stillwater is an amalgamation of bands he knew. Penny Lane is based on real-life Pennie Lane Trumbell, and William's mom was based on Crowe's real life mom.

...and speaking of Anna Paquin, I also suggest Fly Away Home (1996) (https://youtu.be/xPbaEEoO_DA?feature=shared) and The Piano (1993), in which she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at age 11 (https://youtu.be/I_kaUp8NDDU?feature=shared). #MoreAnnaPaquinForAddieCounts

If that's indeed the case, my recommendation for Addie would be to start by listening to "Tommy" by The Who. I'm fact, I'd suggest that everyone listen to "Tommy". I'm fact, I'm gonna end this comment so I could go and listen to "Tommy".

Luis Fernandez

Oh, I'm a sucker for a foreign accent, plus the weekly drama of her trying to express herself in a second language.

LaserLamb

Addie, it was good to watch this with you. I only wish you had access to or watched the Director's Cut, as the extra 40 mins greatly enhanced the movie, & that was the version I had access to. I am only using my phone screen to watch the movies AND your video as 'picture-in-picture', & there's only one movie app that let's me run both at the same time. At least, I couldn't get a 'p-in-p' to run with a Prime or Paramount movie simultaneously. If anybody knows a hack for making that work, I'd really like to know. Anyway, more of the character's personalities & emotions were fleshed out in the longer version. I had asked you in the monthly Q & A's if you would be interested in movies that are mostly music & you said no. Then you go & watch Almost Famous. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Are you going to try to edit it for YouTube or leave it as a Patreon exclusive? Happy, healthy, successful & strong New Year to you & your loved ones! 💖

LaserLamb

Yes, unfortunately, like Popcorn in Bed, I get the impression that Addie really isn't all that interested in music -- at least not more than a very passive sense. 😕

Byrd N. Hand

I'll also just add that, even though she only had a small role in this, I had a gut feeling that Zooey Deschanel would end up becoming a star after I first saw this movie. 🤭

Byrd N. Hand

I actually like OctoKrool's raw, insane energy... but not the fact that they watch a lot of rather stupid lowbrow comedies. 🤔 The other 3 I admittedly don't watch all that much (especially with Shanelle now slogging her way through the MCU like Addie did for a year and a half 🤮). I hate to say it, but Dasha's thick Russian accent kind of annoys me. 🤐 Nick (formerly Thor) Reacts has always been 'meh' for me. But, yes, Addie, TBR Schmitt, Popcorn in Bed, Jen Murray, CineBinge, Hold Down A, Maplenuts React, etc., reacting to those titles would be a dream come true.

Byrd N. Hand

One of my most favorite reactions was almost a year ago! "I didn't expect him to have little pets like this!" "Rocky" (1976).

Randolph Tirazona

“I wanna hug this movie” -Roger Ebert Best review ever. Whoever put this movie on the spinning wheel, well done. 🙂 Super fun rewatch

To quote Lester Bangs, music chooses you. Addie doesn't strike me as someone who would take a deep dive into many of the artists or music on this playlist. Please Addie, correct me if I'm wrong.

LaserLamb

In my humble estimation, James is a blithering idiot, Cam & Zay are annoying goofballs, OctoKrool are just insufferable & Shanelle hasn't outgrown her high school mentality. The ones I like are Addie, TBR Schmidt, Dasha, Jen Murray, Verowak, Clariss, Nick Reacts, Hold Down A, among others. I'd like to see any of them react to those movie. So, I guess I don't want just anybody to do the reactions. I guess I took a cue from Lester Bangs to be honest & merciless.

LaserLamb

Nice catch. The Rolling Stones' "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" live album was also late 1970. The others are earlier, but it makes me wonder if they were stuck in the 1973 mindset while working through these kinds of details.

Shawn Goforth

One gaffe that's always bothered me: one of William's sister's records that she leaves him in 1969 is Joni Mitchell's BLUE, which didn't come out until '72. 😕

Byrd N. Hand

James Vs Cinema and Cam & Zay have done "Magnolia," and OctoKrool and Shanelle Riccio have done "Punch-Drunk Love"... but, alas, that's pretty much it so far. 😕

Byrd N. Hand

'Magnolia' & 'Punch Drunk Love' are 2 movies I wish SOMEBODY...ANYBODY would do reactions to. They need to get more attention from the blindered Reactorverse generation.

LaserLamb

The theatrical version is currently available on Prime Video, available to rent on Apple TV, or is also included in the 4k disc release.

Shawn Goforth

yeah i got out of sync pretty quickly early on, ty

Chris

Well, crap. I own this on blu-ray but all I have is the extended version..... but I looked and saw that it's coming to Paramount+ on Jan 1st, so I can catch it then.

Joe Blankenship

In case anybody's wondering which version Addie watched, then it's the theatrical cut.

Alex Tan

I'm about the same age as Cameron Crowe and am/was very uncool, so I've always related to William here, and love this film. In many ways the early 70s marked the end of the counter-culture era, delineated here by Jimmy Fallon's meeting with the band and luring them away from their roots and into the realm of corporate rock (just as Lester Bangs' voice-over predicts). Penny's dance in the empty auditorium to Cat Stevens' The Wind is kind of a goodbye to the era. So the theme of the day is the loss of innocence, obviously for William, but also for a generation that at the time thought that they had slipped the bonds of commercial control over things. William manages to survive and remain hopeful (Crowe even marries Nancy Wilson of the band Heart), but commercialism and materialism have managed to re-assert themselves with a vengeance since then. The group singing along to Elton John's Tiny Dancer on the bus is a great moment and it gave a big boost to the popularity of the song. This is echoed in the overdose scene in the hotel room, as John's Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters plays in the background.

james repka

That makes sense! I honestly didn't think too much about it until after I finished the movie

On Penny's age: In this film, she is meant to represent a 17 year old, 2 years older than William. Cameron Crowe has stated that he deliberately did not mention her age in the film, so the issues that are already coming to mind could be down-played and not take over the conversation about his experience. His take was that in the early 70s, they were already seen as adults by that age, and behaved accordingly in many cases. Kate Hudson was 19 while filming, Patrick Fugit was 17, and Billy Crudup was around 30.

Shawn Goforth

I forgot Fairuza Balk was in this. Not sure how with those eyes. :D Great reaction! I always love how happy and energetic you are in your videos. Keep up the awesome work.

Here's what I would suggest if you aren't too familiar with the music in this movie: find the list of tracks on the soundtrack for this movie, then find the albums that those tracks originally appeared on. I'd also throw in "Sloppy Seconds" by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, which was referenced. That should give you a few weeks worth of amazing music.

Luis Fernandez

More Cameron Crowe: "Say Anything...," "Singles," and "Jerry Maguire;" also "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," which he only wrote and didn't direct More Patrick Fugit: "Gone Girl" More Billy Crudup: "Big Fish" More Philip Seymour Hoffman: "Boogie Nights," "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "Magnolia," "Punch-Drunk Love," "Capote," "Charlie Wilson's War," "The Master"

I'm so happy you enjoyed this one, Addie. I had a feeling it would be up your alley. This film highlights the importance of the editing process for me. It's been one of my favorites since it's release, and I've seen both the theatrical and extended "bootleg" cut many times. I highly prefer the theatrical cut of this film, more so than any other. This has long been my go-to feel good movie, and one of the best coming of age movies out there, probably because of the story being so heavily based in reality. Crowe actually toured as a young journalist with a few bands around this time and included pieces of several experiences, but the one that most heavily influenced the Stillwater tour was time spent with the Allman Brothers Band. The film includes an incredible ensemble, and I even geek out over the music being done by Nancy Wilson of the band Heart. She and Crowe were married from 1986-2010. In addition to the great principal cast, there are several cameos included from Peter Frampton, Jann Wenner, Rainn Wilson, Mitch Hedberg, Kyle Gass of Tenacious D, and Zack Ward as Red Dog (Ward was Scut Farkus in A Christmas Story). Can't wait to get started with this one. Happy New Year everyone!

Shawn Goforth

Speaking of Kate Hudson, I also suggest The Skeleton Key (2005), for Halloween. You'll get some karate chops and Addie screams from this one. #TheSkeletonKeyForAddieCounts https://youtu.be/W_tlS5nQMoI?feature=shared

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 This is a great movie to close out 2024 with as your last reaction of the year. Can't wait to see what your first reaction of 2025 will be. Anyway, this is a great movie with a great cast. It took me at least 10 or so views of this movie to figure out that the name of Kate Hudson's character, Penny Lane, is the name of a popular song by The Beatles. LOL! Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. For more Kate Hudson, I highly recommend the 2003 "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". Have a great day today, and a fun & safe New Year's Eve tomorrow! 😊

Another Cameron Crowe movie that I suggest is Jerry Maguire (1996) with Tom Cruise, Renée Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr. #JerryMaguireForAddieCounts https://youtu.be/3IUweBZ2RTs?feature=shared

Happy Monday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the theatrical cut of Almost Famous (2000), as your FINAL movie of 2024. This is one Cameron Crowe movie that I need to watch, but when I do, I'll watch the "Bootleg" Director's Cut.
