It's not an invisible force tho. Usopp and Chopper saw Luffy's fist becoming black. Let's just say Oda came up with the idea after the timeskip and took advantage of the fact that no character used a huge armament haki attack before the timeskip. Before timeskip, we only saw small counterattacks against devil fruit users.

2025-10-08 14:39:34 +0000 UTCAfter the timeskip, Oda decided to "colorize" Armament Haki so that most of the time we can see when Luffy is using it and when he's not. You will regularly see characters with black limbs or weapons from now on. Also, there's something you didn't mention. Luffy didn't shrink after using Gear 3! He got rid of that side effect during his training.

Armament haki is given a black color going forward for the convenience of the audience so they know when Haki is being used in an attack. I assume this is because haki usage is going to be way more common going forward and it would be awkward for characters to announce each time to pump haki into an attack.
