I can add that if something is bad then u can fix it or do nothing and just complain about it. Garp chose to make it better.

2025-07-15 19:25:20 +0000 UTCThis was my analysis of Garp on my notes up to this point in the series. I have already finished the manga, but this was my perspective when I first read up to this point: Here’s my analysis of Garp, the liberal cage. Garp is such a great written character. One of the most uniquely written in modern fiction. An hidden idealist. He’s an embodiment of Oda’s true message behind one piece, to live in the moment freely. He’s the matured version of luffy. An wise man that lives the ideal way of a man. Smiling, teaching, loving and enjoying everyday. Luffy embodies freedom through adventure. Garp embodies freedom through acceptance. Because true freedom isn’t defined by what you can do. It’s the acceptance of what you can’t. He’s caged by the suppression of the marines, but learned to fly within the cage. That’s true freedom. A bird who’s fixated with pursuit for a bigger cage, will never find comfort in the one he becomes stuck with. He’s mature, yet desguised in childish behaviour. He understands what’s right and inevitably necessary for global order. He’s not selfish in fulfilling his own external liberation because he knows that there is more to save; people’s future. He walked into the cage of justice willingly, then learned to live liberally within it. Because the concept of marines is inherently in the right. However, the governor of the system is rooted in evil. And he knows that. But he refuses to abandon righteousness, therefore he stays. That’s also why he let the marineford incident happen. Fundamentally, It wasnt his decistion to make, it was Ace's. Ace chose to live as a pirate. And Garp, a man that views freedom as the way of life, respected his way of living. Whether that was the right or wrong choice does not matter. Garp let Ace live the way he wanted, providing freedom to Ace's previously fragmented ideology. Yes, the path Ace chose led to an conflicting and harmful career. But it allowed Ace to resolve his own convictions and ties to the privilege of living. Garp preached the way of marines to protect his grandsons. Not to deviate them from self-discovery. Now he can comfortably watch his birds fly from within a cage that ironically liberates his deciples.
