What I love so deeply about Joyce and Walky's dynamic is just like, how steeped they both are in their respective first impressions of one another, those impressions being as they are so intensely colored by each of their feelings about Dorothy. Like, Joyce cannot find grace in her heart for Walky to save her life, and it seems increasingly clear that this comes from her own passionate feelings about Dorothy affecting how "she's way too good for him". Meanwhile, Walky has always felt stung by this, and can see – consciously or not – how effortlessly devoted Dorothy is to Joyce. That she has also demonstrated devotion to him has shaken him, over and over, because he just doesn't feel like he could possibly deserve it. He thus has to keep Joyce in this surface level box understanding of her, so that his delusion that Dorothy is obsessed with lost causes can be preserved. This is kind of why I think him and Amber are kinda maybe perfect for each other, since they both hold themselves in such low regard and hold the other much higher. I think for them each to heal, they need to have a space where they can be garbage together: a rotten heap from which their newer better selves, seen only by the other, may bloom 🌼
