Does the Ranger do better with a Longbow?

Does the Ranger do better with a Longbow? Does the Ranger do better with a Longbow?

Hunter feels like the damage subclass to compare to Assassin. Colossus slayer doesn't compete with Hunter's mark. But maybe that changes in tier 3 when BM gets a boost?

I don't really get the methodology on these. Every round you're attacking and giving the beast your bonus action, but somehow you're placing Hunter's Mark half the time? That woud seem to assume you get to place it pre combat and that target survivies to your 2nd turn on average. Then starting at L17 you're still taking advange even when you have to move on to a target with no HM. I re-did the calcs assuming you have to give up half the bonus actions to place HM and it knocks it down by 2-3 points.

I'm considering turning druidic fighting style into the gish fighting style similar to eldritch knight, same for paladins fighting style. Let them replace an attack for a cantrip when they take the attack action. That should help them considerable and it starts to actually look like a fighting style.

thanks for these videos.

ranger for sure needs a little help.

I do agree damage is not everything, though I do find its helpful to build for max damage so that you can pair back for utility with the least loss. Of course some classes have a ton of utility even if They build pure dmg .

And don't forget the once per turn reroll of a damage die. But does that feat affect some builds more than others to any major degree? After all, every archer build can benefit from it and gets one reroll per turn. It would have a different effect on melee builds that might not be able to use that feat with what might otherwise be the best weapon(s). However, i think I would take that feat ahead of Sharpshooter in the games where I am a player.

Given how poorly the warlock baseline has performed compared to the builds of the new classes, I would not be surprised if the actual warlock class smashes that baseline. One omission in particular I have noticed is that the baseline lacks an epic boon at 19th level, but every class build gets one that greatly increases damage output. I wonder what other boosts are missing?

David Knott

I'm concerned warlock is going to crush every class. Hail of thorns 1d10 is similar to 2d8 divine smite.

I have seen similar issues with all my ranged builds and you may be forced to take the piercer feat just to increase crit damage instead of sharpshooter

DOUGLAS REYNOLDS

Buff relentless hunter to include the current capstone. This adds scaling in T3 Then make a new capstone. Maybe HM no longer takes a BA to move?

A correction to the above: Obviously the shortbow ranger falls apart in tier 4 if you are taking advantage of the core tier 4 ranger abilities. But maybe we would get better numbers in tier 3 if we are able to postpone taking Great Weapon Master until 16th level in preparation for switching to the longbow at 17th level?

David Knott

I wonder whether a shortbow ranger might be more effective than a longbow ranger under the new rules. The shortbow has the Vex property, which would increase the accuracy of at least some of the attacks, and because you would not be taking the Great Weapon Master feat, you would not be paying the opportunity cost of increasing Str for that feat (and thus have a better Dex). Also -- How does the Swift Quiver spell compare in damage with using the 17th and 20th level features that boost Hunter's Mark? If the comparison is favorable, it could be used in one combat per 5th level slot that you can cast.

David Knott

It looks like we won’t see a shillelagh line for a while.

Daniel Lingeman

Does the Beast Master build use the ability that lets the Beast take the Help action as a bonus action (when commanded with BA)? That could give advantage on one Longbow attack

Marius Smit

I have a player who is an 2024 ranger hunter bowman. Any solid suggestions how to improve this? Here are some ideas but not sure which would work: - allow unlimited uses instead of proficiency bonus per day then spell slots to free up first level spell - upcast HM to do a 1d8, 1d10 extra damage etc as they level up. - remove the concentration requirement so they can be freed up to cast other AOE spells

Nik Magnus

Not likely as they could only attack once per round if they did. That's why it works for Rogue because they don't get extra attack.

Thomas LeBoeuf

would a true strike build potentially solve this similar to rogue? all in on wisdom?

Luke Parker

Ranger is ahead with 2 dual welder. But yes tier 3 actually level 9 it still drops off alot be cuase the lack of spells that boost damage. Really rely on subclass to boost single target damage. They are forced into feats to boost at level 8 and 12 and using 16 to boost wisdom.
