Barbarian damage in 2024

Barbarian damage in 2024 Barbarian damage in 2024

Comments

Copy/paste from my Youtube comment because there are a lot of (small) issues in the calculations: For the berserker, the bonus action attack damage seems wrong on several occasions. On level 5: you keep a chance to happen of 0.10 (0.0975) when it should be 0.1855 (chance of at least one 20 on 4 dice). Also on level 17 and 18, you assume using Brutal Strike, but Brutal Strike damage is 44.3, and Frenzy + retaliation are +22.1, so total should be 66.4, not 63.7. And finally on level 20, you forget to drop the chance of Graze to 0.09 (for reckless attack, bonus action and retaliation) or 0.3 (for brutal strike).

I am curious to hopefully see a dual wield barbarian build or a dual wield strength build

Great video. Looking forward to seeing some alternative builds next. May I humbly suggest you also look at some Lance builds? I played a lance and shield Champion fighter mounted on an elephant with GWM and Duelling Fighting style and it worked really well. Was a level 14 one shot. Elephants are cheap and have a good health pool. I think it could also work with Barbarian where rage, D12 hit die, and mounted Combatant could let you tank a lot of damage for the elephant. Then hopefully you can get some temp hp for saving throw damage effects

Doesn’t rage damage apply to the graze damage? The copy says “when you make an attack using strength… and deal damage to a target…” aren’t you doing damage with the graze feature? So rage damage would apply? Hm. Now that I read the mastery, it says it can only be increased by increasing the ability score. Is this the specific rule overriding the general rule or vice versa?

I haven’t punched the math yet for the whole build but people keep talking about Giant Barbarian and if you had say 14 levels of Giant and had Nick and Duel Wielder with a 84% chance to hit making 4 attacks with 2d6 on each attack that would be 23.52 13 more damage than Frenzy at that level I haven’t done the math so can’t say for certain but you could grab a fighting style feat like Fighting Initiate for two weapon fighting because if we go 20 levels you definitely don’t want to give up the capstone I bet those numbers would be great I personally don’t want to use anything previously printed which means that Feat and Subclass I won’t touch but that is a fun subclass and looks like still the strongest even in the new rules especially with the extra control elements added on

It feels like the barbarian is skewed to too much damage at level 5-10 and too little improvement afterwards (especially for me as I have next to no interest in level 13+). The fighter has a much better designed curve.

I'm so happy the math is beating the allegations that some classes are massively undertuned. It'll be great once we get the other books and have some time with these ideas at the table The craziest part to me is that only one optimized build so far has done any mcing I about died cackling at the CME graph. Absolutely insane, and I bet it didn't even maximize potential like Magic Initiate Druid for Shillelagh, Magic Extra Attack True Strike, War Caster and Duel Wielder feat, and a dip of Fighter for Con saves/Two Weapon Fighting/Weapon Mastery. The funniest part would be if going Strength instead of Dexterity had a higher dps. I'm look forward to the true bard baseline eventually. Since you're likely to get to Paladin first though I should mention that Lances work with GWM, Polearm Master, and Duelist when they use find steed. I'm sure you could find a very funny optimization in there if you chose to allow the mount to affect the chart

You’d have to multiclass but it’s better.

I'd love to see how a two weapon fighting barbarian compares

I've been trying to calculate a war cleric with true strike from their background but this kind of math is making me go cross eyed 😵‍💫 glad to have you making videos we can all reference hahaha Also glad to see that these barbarians are absolute monsters! They should be!

62-bit Hero

Just a thought regarding a baseline. You are doing basic (race free, subclass free) builds for each class and plotting them across 20 levels hoping that one of them will look like a baseline. For real, the very best baseline would be taking the six or seven classes you're going to do and finding the average at each level and then just plotting that. The other thing you could do is take your "across 20 levels" average DPR for the seven classes, then put that point at level 10 and a half, and draw perfectly straight line from your average first level damage through that point, it would be a marvelous baseline and would truly be the most vanilla damage you do with the base weapon DPR class. Definitely these are options if no one class looks like it's the "baseline"

Yeah, that makes sense for me. Giant is just in a really weird place because if you look at giant compared to the 2024 subclasses, it is kind of obvious to me. The giant was designed with 2024 in mind and like I said it’s the last subclass to come out for 2014 so I know some people who haven’t even used it yet. To me, the giant barbarian is the one backwards compatible subclass that would be the easiest to slide into 2024

Eric McDaniel

I want to look at new options first. I may go back to giant barb at some point.

Treantmonk's Temple

This was out so much faster than the fighter! Who woulda guessed barb math would be simpler? 😜

Ben Potts

Hey Chris, I just saw the video. I know you don’t use 2014 subclasses that much but would you mind doing these calculations for the giant barbarian as the last subclass to come out for 2014, It didn’t get a lot of use and all features are backwards compatible even more so than some of the other old subclasses
