The Wizard and Subclasses The Wizard and Subclasses

Comments

Yeah i did my research. Its bard.

Vonz

Still wizards 😎

Nik the RAWful evil

The bonus action Minor Illusion I feel is going to cause DM’s some thought on how illusionary distractions work on enemies during combat. It’ll probably come up in almost every combat!

So now all the videos are out, I can finally reveal my thumbnail tier list. The product of literally minutes of exhaustive research, I've combed through all the class video thumbnails, and I'll be giving a mark out of 5 to each one, judging on appropriacy, detail and panache. Before we begin, I should let you know I'm pushing to hit 10 likes, so if you haven't already, hit that heart button. Let's get started… Warlocks: Cackling joy, crackling fire and cute little purple horn suits the tagline and the juicy new warlock to a T. A cracking start. 5/5 Sorcerer: I'm not in love with the wild magic sorcerer but Chris clearly is. I rolled the dice to get the score: potplant/5. Sorry, Chris. Barbarian: Raging and teleporting at the same time is a tricky concept to get across, but this is a solid attempt. 3.5/5 Fighter: Sun's out, guns out... But a bit close to the Barbarian so in this comparison I'm afraid the Barbarian comes out top. 3/5. Bard: The class canonically most likely to blow its own trumpet blows its own trumpet! 3.5/5 Monk: Given how much the monk has been improved, I was hoping for a comedy kung-fu pose. Just can't get behind the monk as a mobile cheese delivery platform for emanating spell casters. 2.5/5 Druid: Undoubtedly the koala will be the brown bear of the 2024 moon druid. I'd give it 6 out of 5 if I could. Hey, wait. I'm doing these scores, so I can. 6/5. Ranger: so this is probably incomprehensible if you haven't been following The Great Hunter's Mark Debate. If you have, it's anywhere between a 5 and a minus 1000, so let's call it 3.5/5 (requires concentration), just to annoy people. Cleric: I was going to dismiss this but then I thought about it. The pose is kind of obvious and a little bit boring but actually quite effective - much like the cleric. So for accuracy, 3/5 Paladin: What is this weapon wreathed in divine power? Why is Chris eyeing it so sceptically? Is it good? Is it bad? Gonna have to watch the video to find out! 4/5. Rogue: We all know where Chris stands on the martial/caster divide (about 40' back from the actual line, readying Hypnotic Pattern) but really. This is just cruel. Funny though, which is why it's not 1. 2/5. Wizard: Here we are on the other side of the divide in all its smug glory. And hypnotic pattern notwithstanding, into every wizard's life there comes a time when all you can do... is say it with fireball. 4/5 So that's my complete class Thumbnail rankings. Some absolute bangers in there, and even the rogue isn't that far behind. Overall, it's a pretty strong list, but you might want to talk to your group before you allow the koala at your table. Before I finish, I'd just like to reverse the normal order and thank the creator who made this possible - I'm sorry if I spell it wrong. Here goes: Thanks, Creeyaiess! So that's it. Now I'm gonna sit back, relax, and have some fun! Rating Chris's thumbnails is for everyone!

Ganabul

Chris, I know you love your maths so wondering how you rate Wizard as most powerful when it’s subclass ratings of 3+4+3+4.5=14.5 lags the Bard 3.5+4+3+4.5= 15 and the Sorcerer 3.5+3.5+3.5+5=15.5. Are you basing your class ranking on subclasses beyond the 4 (either historic or possible future)? PS: love the content, good luck for 100,000

Peter

Which class do you think are 2nd and 3rd ?

Vonz

Maybe disguise self, longstrider or silent image.

Treantmonk's Temple

I would say so

Treantmonk's Temple

For sure.

Keegan MBG

Now we have to wait to see how the Monster Manual handles monsters with spells- since Monsters of the Multiverse they had been giving creatures/NPCs features that function like spells but aren’t actually spells.

Finalplayer14

Chris I think you missed a step with the Abjurer. There’s actually a significant buff to the level 14 feature coming from the level 3rd feature in that your Ward is effectively doubled against spell damage due to it now counting your resistance.

Keegan MBG

In the playtest, the wizard's spell book held all spells the wizard knows, instead of all wizard spells in the 2014 handbook. It doesn't usually matter, but would open up some interesting options for the scribe wizard (my favorite subclass)

Daniel Renzi

Yes, Chris you don't answer your own question from the thumbnail!

Joshua Paddison

YES!

Theodore Sroka

The problem with background choice is that it's already a very difficult choice between stats and feats, unfortunately skills is the last thing you will look at

Teo

You could always pick up an int based skill from your background or play a human and choose one for your free skill.

Thomas LeBoeuf

I am glad you didn't take the obvious step of making this video available only at wizard level and above.

David Knott

Thanks again Chris! 😁

Cory Thurman

Oh absolutely. Biggest letdown of the new PHB for me.

vS1Ds_Legacy

If you don't have any int based prof in general

Teo

You don't actually get anything from Scholar if you start lv1 fighter, right?

Teo

So is the wizard still the most powerful ?

Vonz

Alas, the spell mastery nerf. I will miss the near permanent +5 AC and teleport. I might take Invisibility or maybe mirror image now. Not sure about level 1. What would you take, Chris?

Jason G. Rheins

I wish there were some guidance (new DMG ?) about spells a higher level wizard knows in a one-shot. When I would play, say, a level 14 order of scribes wizard in a one-shot and could only get the minimum number of spells known in my spell book, I really thought it was a problem.

Jason G. Rheins

Wizard time! I can already say I wish they kept a fixed version of Modify and Create spell
