I hadn't considered Barbarians. There goes the one thing they could actually do with spell slots...

I *love* the variety and fun this brings to smite. I hope they even add a new option for smiting for each Paladin subclass. I still have a hard time stomaching the bonus action casting. I think I could get behind requiring a bonus action on the new smite spells if they left Divine Smite without requiring a BA - then it's like: "do you want to do something cool at the cost of a bonus action or save your bonus action and give up something cool?" In that case, though, I'd want to see the other smites keep pace with Divine Smite for damage. The main reason I'm annoyed that it's officially a spell now is because Barbarians. Counterspell it? Fine - probably a bad move for the one counterspelling it in most situations I think, and it's not like every combat encounter is chalk full of spell casters with counterspell. But, as much as I love seeing WotC taking strides to *encourage* sticking with a single class by making it more rewarding to do so, I hate to see them taking away multiclass viability at the same time.

Nice breakdown. I knew I liked the streamlining they were going for but I couldn't quite get past my feelings on divine smite being nerfed. This helped. Thanks!
