As an early edition player myself, this was definitely a fun video down memory lane. I was definitely part of the group that played 2E until only about 5 years ago when we switched to 5E so that comment made me laugh. Oh... and grappling is definitely too weak now. ;)

In 1E I liked that paladins were rare
In 3.5 I like the feat trees and prestige classes because it feels like you've earned it.
IMO I wish the paladin ranger and warlock classes were like prestige classes, or a title, or a feat you selected. Honest.
I could see a wizard gaining the paladin title after defending the realm and with it come some powers
I could see a barbarian becoming a ranger after defending his realm from a scourge of wolves or giant spiders
I could see a fighter seeking power and succumbing to the promises of a patron
Yes you do this with multiclassing obviously
