RAW in D&D

A lot of what is claimed as RAW just plain isn't.

TRDSIC is priceless.

That "The Rules Don't Say I Can't" as an acronym sounds like Turd-Sick is just a happy coincidence.

This is a really interesting philosophical discussion, and I do think you're right to focus on what is said rather than what is not said given that 5e bases its rules on exceptions. Not saying this would be suitable for your channel necessarily but it would be really cool to hear a scholar in the philosophy of language react to this. I was surprised that you barely mentioned RAI as a concept. Claiming something is RAW isn't necessarily in and of itself a claim about RAI, and inasmuch as we have a general standard it's RAI rather than RAW even if the former is a little nebulous. You're right that we can't know the designers' intent. It's our best guess rather than a certainty. I've always found the notion of RAI a helpful shorthand for rules discussions outside the context of a specific table, though. TRDSIC is a hilarious acronym. I definitely spent several seconds wondering what the heck you were talking about and whether you had thrown in a random term from German or something, or else were actually saying "turdsick" xD
