If one of the goals of the new edition is to make the game more friendly to beginners, the designers need to decouple thematic choice from mechanical. Removing ASIs from the base races/lineages does that. Adding the ASIs to backgrounds would be a step in the wrong direction. We’ve already seen a change with how lineages/races and ASIs work with Tasha’s and newer races like the Harengon: you can choose to add +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 regardless of lineage. I would expect to see that carried forward. Otherwise, the designers would have added an unnecessary additional layer of complexity to their recent publications if they knew they would go a different direction soon.
If backgrounds are going to change, again if they are looking to decouple thematic and mechanical choice, I would look for the designers to remove the default selections of skill proficiencies and the 1 language + 1 tool / 2 languages / 2 tools as currently assigned to backgrounds. Leaving these open-ended is already an optional rule today and will greatly reduce the analysis paralysis of background selection.

I enjoyed this video a lot. I know it's early, but hype for a 5.5 version hits me every time I think of it. If you're shy on video ideas, a hybrid "what I predict/what I want" series of videos for each of the classes would be an entertaining watch.
