And second, thank you all for recommending we watch this! It was super intense, but also so well made. We both fricken looooove Sci-fi, so if you have more suggestions for sci-fi movies, we're all ears ❤️❤️❤️

Not necessarily low budget, but just primitive compared to more "traditional" CGI that people enjoyed for the prior two decades or so. The models on screen looked like they lacked weight or true presence in some scenes because of how they were animated and comp'd in. Think of the outstanding fully modeled t-1000 scenes in T2 versus the last act scene where Arnie's character is catapulted off the truck into the refinery in full jank glory. Or in Reloaded where Neo fights the Smiths for the first time and looks like a bad video game adaptation (which also looked terrible first run in theater). Or the entire Black Panther flick where his CGI shots never felt grounded due to how they setup shots/angles (among other poorly thought out plot decisions to do with vibranium efficacy), but this was likely due to the man being quite ill at the time of production unfortunately.
Just wasn't quite ready for primetime in the foreground, but you could also point to the great mothership comp'ing where they hid/sold it effectively in every single shot. Especially in the low fidelity news reel scenes, great budget savings and it sold the effects.

You know, it hurts when people say '90s movies are old but it really stings when people say 2009 movies are older, even though technically they are older than say last year for instance 😂

They thought it looked low budget? I thought it looked frickin' real! I remember when I saw it for the first time how amazed I was at the ship and aliens, everything.

At the time when this movie came out, it was definitely a quirky low budget flick that people described pejoratively as looking like it was a video game (and rendered with one). It's interesting to see how that's come full circle with people watching these movies now after becoming used to cinema toolchains being heavily entrenched in using those exact tools (Unreal engine is used by outfits big and small these days for various things). Just one of those things, I guess.
As far as recommendations similar to this one, Blomkamp's next flick called Elysium was basically the next iteration of this (which in itself was an adaptation of a lower budget Alive in Joburg before Peter Jackson decided to produce District 9) and a movie that is in some ways a spiritual predecessor to this called Alien Nation. But for scifi flicks that have great effects in general? There's a pretty recent one called Fried Barry that was set/shot/made in South Africa that's worth your time and something I really think would be up your alley would be Pitch Black and the followup Chronicles of Riddick.

I always enjoy it when y'all reach the "Well, this not what I expected" point of all these older movies that people want you to see. There's a reason they're loved, and it isn't because they just bring the same old crap. 😀

Also some context: This movie was released ONLY 15 years after South Africa ended racial segregation.

I subscribe to a few other reactors and I have lists of movies I need to eventually catch up with them on. No list for you guys because every movie you do I have to IMMEDIATELY watch your reaction!

Without delving into politics and social issues, the movie makes a statement from its South African director, along with keeping us entertained with Wikus' story. At this point in time it looks like his "District 10" has been put on hold indefinitely.
A short time after "District 9" became a hit, Sharlto Copley starred in a short skit as his character Wikus, trying to connect with fellow South African Charlize Theron in Hollywood.

District 9 is possibly my favorite alien film of all time. I love how gritty and true to life and dark it is. For once, aliens are the victims, not the attackers.

Well I'll always rally for the Alien prequels, Prometheus and Alien Covenant. Aside from those: Oblivion, Looper, The Island, Brightburn, Snowpiercer, and 12 Monkeys along with the Riddick series: Pitch Black, Dark Fury, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Riddick.
And if you really want to not sleep because your mind will not stop thinking about it, Donnie Darko.
And giving some love to my eternal crush Noomi Rapace, What Happened to Monday is a good one too.
I'll also go on record as saying Snowpiercer and 12 Monkeys also have TV shows that are, in my opinion, superior to the movies.
