Background

Camel racing in Samarahd is not just a sport, but a cultural touchstone. The most successful riders and their camels are practically celebrities in the city and many retired racers have gone on to become prominent members of society when their careers have ended.

While the major races take part every few months, there are smaller races held twice weekly at the arena and anyone who can afford the entry fee can take part. There are a variety of types of race, but the most popular is the ‘Camelee’. An anything goes race where only the camels are protected, while the riders are fair game for anything they can throw at each other. The race can be brutal, but with medics on hand fatalities are rare, and the prize more than outweighs the risk.

Design Notes

Camel Racing Arena

• 01 – Clubhouse Entrance – The entrance to the grand clubhouse is flanked by two stone camel statues. Rumour says they can spit at anyone not welcome inside.
• 02 – Drinks Counter
• 03 – Food Counter
• 04 – Betting Counter – Gambling is allowed at the arena, but is carefully controlled. That doesn’t stop a lot of side bets happening in the crowds though.
• 05 – Trophy Gallery – Trophies and lists of past winners are displayed in glass cabinets along the walls
• 06 – Members Lounge – Private bar and lounge for club members
• 07 – Members Seats – Private grandstand for club members
• 08 – Stables – The camels are kept are inspected here before the races
• 09 – Starting Gates
• 10 – Track – The track is 600ft long. The bigger races take place over 10 or more laps, but the smaller open races and Camelee’s take place over a shorter sprint distance.
• 11 – Grandstands – Ticket holders can take a seat on the raised platforms, giving a better view over the track. The rest of the spectators crowd around the western end of the track, vying for a good spot.
• 12 – Storage Shed – General supplies and camel feed are kept here
• 13 – Trainers Camp – The Camel trainers live on site and are close at hand should one of the camels need assistance during or after the race.
• 14 – Holding Area – After the races, the camels are held here until they are returned to their pens at night.
• 15 – Grooms Camp – Those learning to become camel trainers start out as grooms and have the gruelling tasks of washing and feeding the camels and mucking out the stables.
• 16 – Oasis – Samarahd is famed for its emerald oases that are dotted around the city.
• 17 – Finish Line
• 18 – VIP Seats – The racing club owners and their guests get the prime position to see the camels and their riders cross the finish line.
