I completely agree with Chris about the soft language stuff except for the fact I've worked in disability care and I can say that the changing language in that area is much more to do with understanding more about these disabilities. Retarded means slow, they aren't slow. They genuinely do just have different needs. If the world was built for the differently abled like its built for us, we'd have colonised Mars by now. Specific Needs is also accurate. Still using the word retarded when talking about mental disabilities is ironically just confusing the point.
