“You know, I’ve never met a Sa’a.”
Aysel glanced over her shoulder, though all she really saw was the top of Kinri’s head. She sat sidesaddle behind Aysel on Sonnak’s back, her arms wrapped tightly about Aysel’s torso. Her skin was cold against Aysel’s and had caused goosebumps to break out across her arms when they first touched. Aysel found herself somewhat fascinated with the contrast of Kinri’s pale skin and hair against her own deep red color.
“You know what I am?” Aysel asked, turning her eyes back to the road ahead.
She felt Kinri nod against her back. “Though I’ve never seen one of you. Some of my people have, and you fit their description perfectly.”
Aysel felt cool hands slip through some of her hair, sending a shiver down her neck. She glanced over, spotting Kinri playing with the strands that had fallen loose from her braid.
“Red skin, and red hair. The Sa’a are red all over,” Kinri said, clearly quoting what she’d heard from others. Her silvery-lavender eyes looked up, meeting Aysel’s gaze. “All but their eyes. Gold like the metal hidden beneath the sands.”
Aysel cleared her throat roughly, turning away from Kinri as her heart suddenly started beating much faster. “Sa’a are not all red. Many tribes have brown skin instead. And our eyes are not all golden.”
“Is that so?” Kinri murmured, leaning forward and pressing a cool cheek between Aysel’s shoulder blades. “Is their hair still red?”
“Yes,” Aysel said. “Their hair is still red.”
