Hey guys!
I have some updates that I want to relay to you from Patreon's creator support.
Apple is requiring that Patreon switch to their iOS in-app purchase system starting this November, or risk being removed from the App Store.
If you are using an iPhone, starting in November, new subscriptions made through the iOS app will be subject to a 30% increase in accordance with Apple's App Store fees. My prices here in the iOS app will go up as well to be able to pay for the fee without eating into my income.
I'd suggest you to subscribe through the official Patreon website in your browser instead, as it will be 30% cheaper for you!
All existing subscriptions will NOT be subject to this change, this will only be for NEW subscriptions made through the official iOS app, using Apple's in-app purchase system. Android is not affected as they aren't forcing purchases in the Android app to go through Google, for now. But this may change in the future, and I will post another update here if they will.
Apple's App Store only supports subscription billing, where you pay on the same day that you subscribed every month. (For example, if you subscribed on the 5th of July 2024, your next payment will be on the 5th of the month every month moving forward.)
This sucks a bit for creators, as the first-of-the-month billing provided a steady and consistent income and a payday every month. But this change will begin in November 2024 and all creators must switch to this new billing method by November of 2025.
I am not sure when I will switch, I am leaning toward sticking to it as long as possible, but that would make my profile less visible for discovery and new subscriptions in the iOS app. I will inform you when this change will occur at a later date once I go through all my options.
You can read more about this change here
TL;DR New subscribers who subscribe through the iPhone app will be paying 30% more than people who subscribe through the website. The 30% goes to Apple and not to little me. And billing will change from first-of-the-month, to subscription billing on the same day as your first payment, every month.
Thanks for reading, and hope you have a great day!
