Update Roundup April 2025

New Lab Functionality: PWA and Offline Read-Only Mode

A new Goblin Lab update has made the notebook a Progressive Web App (PWA)! What does that mean? A couple of things…

Firstly, on supporting browsers* you can now install the notebook which lets you open it like an app, with a shortcut on your desktop, home screen, or app drawer and having it run in its own window outside the browser.

And secondly, the notebook, whether using a browser or installed app, now has a read-only mode when offline to allow you access to your campaign data.

If you know you need to view data when you won’t have a connection, or just want a local copy in case you lose connection, then you can enable this feature to keep a copy ready to view at all times.

Offline mode needs to be enabled per campaign and per browser, and is currently configured in the lab section of the campaign preferences.

* Different browsers have varying support for PWAs and their features. While all major browsers support the offline features, Firefox and Safari may not offer the option to install.

New Lab Functionality: Enhanced markdown editor

A new Goblin Lab update brings an improved notes editor which shows the markdown styling directly in the editor. It also highlights the custom goblin markdown like object references and rollbable() fields. Enable this in the lab settings per campaign to give it a go!

Index objects self-reference - {{.index}}

You can create an index list on the current object without needing to use the objectid by replacing it with the word "self" or omitting it entirely. This makes it a little easier to create indexes and allow it to be included in templates and snippets.

{{objectid.index?expand}} becomes {{self.index?expand}} or just {{.index?expand}}

Previously you needed to include the object id even if the index was for the current object. This simplifies that process for the most common use of this feature.

The Goblin is on the hunt for artwork!

A few months ago, I added the hexagon pattern you currently see behind the login panel. The plan is to replace this with a dynamically chosen image from a library of RPG-inspired artwork. I'm now looking for images to build that library.

If you're an artist or know someone who is, and have an image that might fit, I’d love to hear from you! I’m looking for artwork that you'd be happy to see showcased to notebook users, and I’m open to discussing terms on a per-image basis.

There's no strict theme for images, the main considerations are:

If desired, attribution will be given at the bottom of the page with your name and a link to your image, site, or portfolio. If you have something that might be a good fit, send me a message!

These examples show how images would appear but aren’t necessarily representative of what I’m looking for!

Install PWA -> Rename Shortcut... Makes it look renamed! But thanks for the support!

The Goblin

I’m really grateful for the consistent and significant updates to this tool. You do great work, please keep it up. I really like the Notebook and use it regularly, I don’t think there’s anything else like it out there. Now I just need a version of the app called Gonlin’s Notebook because of the blue goblins in my campaign called Gonlins

Alex Piklor

Thanks, it means a lot to hear comments like that!
