They Don't Make Them Like They Used To

The late Andrew Sarris, film critic for the NY Village Voice, pointed out in a brilliant article in the late 1970's that with the mega-success of Star Wars, the focus audience for films had become the 14 year old boy, because if they liked a film they would go many times. This created a magnetic pull toward action rather than thought. He also pointed out that since Hollywood films made more money overseas rather than domestically that there was a trend to reduce dialog to a minimum. Sarris stated in his article "Can you imagine "The Philadelphia Story" translated into Egyptian?" - rather sums up the dilemma. Food for thought. Thank you.

I'm not anti-modern films, but there is an absence of just telling a story as simply as possible. It's more about atmosphere and mood or references and sound bites to promote on tiktok.
