Escapades of USN Railway Gun Crews - This reminds me of the stories about what the chiefs provided (magically) for Nimitz when he was sent to Pearl Harbor to build the submarine base there. This was from the E.B. Potter biography of Nimitz.

Here is a direct link to YT so it's the same either way :)

1:27 - Am I right in thinking based on this that it is better for you if I watch these on YouTube rather than here? I'm going to assume this is true and switch back to viewing the Drydock on YouTube.

Thank you sir for answering my question about my uncle and the USNC.

In a battleship main gun the shell is rammed into the chamber followed by the powder bags. If the order to cease fire is given before the gun is discharged, how is the gun unloaded? It seems the powder bags would not present a problem, but how is the shell removed and handled?

Q1 was interesting ... My family had a good friend who was the US Naval Attache in Moscow in the 1970's. He had some wonderful stories about his time in the USSR. Before then, he also was the CO of a diesel sub during the Vietnam war. My uncle served under him at that time (my uncle was the engineering officer then navigator). The sub had earlier been converted to carry Regulus missiles. After Polaris came out, the sub was kept and converted for more 'generic' uses. When my uncle was there - the sub was often used (in Vietnam) to land SEAL teams and other interesting people (quietly) in the north and come back sometime later after they had done whatever they had done ashore. The 'garage' that had housed the missiles was very handy for putting boats and other equipment in for use by the teams. The stories of his time in the sub were great, but the stories of when he was in Moscow were awesome - right out of a spy movie. Neither my uncle or his CO would provide any detail on what/who/when/why and such on their exploits with their 'Sub Taxi' runs off Vietnam.
