The other problem with Shinano is that she consumes more oil than any other carrier of the time. Not a feature for the IJN at the time. Small point, no way the Royal Navy would have used new Lion class ships off Normandy. Look at the ships they did use, for both navies these were ships that wouldn't be seriously missed if damaged or even lost. The only reason Torch had the USS Massachusetts was the presence of the French ships in port. USS Chesapeake is the classic case of a ship unprepared for action... and it didn't end well.

Q&A Can you discuss what is involved in a ship “working up”? For example, a battleship of some sort, like HMS Vanguard. Also, do most navies basically do the same thing regarding working up their vessels?
