Recovering an Antique Lampshade - From the Mind of Christine McConnell

Comments

Love it, I'm gonna try this on ceiling light shades, I hate this modern stuff, they're annoying.

Kerry Shepherd-Bolt

I'm wondering also!

Amanda Shyman

I wonder where she found her blouse... It's so cute and vintage looking.

Cassandra Toscano

Christine, how do you keep things like litter boxes and food bowls worked into the look of the house?

Courtney - Crow Fire

I loved watching this video, so relaxing and beautiful work. Plus I loved seeing all of your fur babies

Sarah Neely

I'm on the lowest tier but I don't think she includes this in her videos. Maybe for the higher tiers?

N

Is there any instructional content for this? Materials used, etc?

Annie Kendig

Beautiful!! If you do another lamp shade video in the future, you should show how to make the frame!!

Lizz Lange

How do I update my address ๐Ÿค” I cannot find anywhere to do it.

Tricia hedglin

This came out so incredibly stunning.

Diane Chattaway

She messaged me back in April and said it is supposed to be shipped in May

Desiree Coon

Have been waiting a hot minute for this episode and it is amazing! Thanks for all the wonderful tips, especially around dyeing fringe & fabrics. I finished my lampshade using scraps of antique fabric & metal lace I'd been hoarding for a few years. It was so satisfying to finally finish it, but my hands were totally wrecked with all the hand-sewing! It's one of my favorite things I've ever made.

Lisa Donohue

I would love to see a video for a headboard. My bed is far too large for any pretty ones you can buy, so I have to make my own.

Rebecca Hatch

Absolutely adore your shade. I have painted, macramรฉs and played with vintage shades for years, but you are inspiring me to take it to a different level. Thank you!

Diane

Hi Christine, I just want to thank you for uploading your videos to YouTube, because, although I don't understand English, thanks to this platform I can activate the subtitles in Spanish. I love your videos and this is my only way to understand them. (By the way this text is thanks to the magic of Google Translate)

Eva Marรญa Hidalgo

CHRISTINE! I just dreamed about you, so I have to write it down immediately. I was visiting you in your magnificent home; impossible, since I'm in Australia. Another random part of the dream, was that I had made myself sick on blueberry chocolate cake on the way to school (I don't go to school ๐Ÿ˜‚) I had this fluffy black cat with a tiny white sliver of a beard; a girl. She's from my Real-Life, but I could *not* remember her name. I was shy to talk to you, but my cat-friend really wanted to meet you, and be introduced, so I sauntered into the lounge, and introduced my cat, and you said: "Yes; that's my little (it sounded like pikachu cross with a sneeze)." YOU had a name for her, so it didn't matter that I forgot her name; she chose to be known by your name. There was another fun, short-hair silver tabby that you introduced me to (named after Silverchair, the band, but not the band-name) to which I said "Yes! We used to live together in a sharehouse. We're friends." You also had a human-friend in there, who was very Lovely, she mentioned she got anxious at night, when the Sun went down, so I guessed she had a Pisces Moon, and explained Astrology to the both of you: what happens at Sunset. I also guessed she was a Capricorn, because she was kind of a dyed-black hair glamour-goth. Natural, though. THEN, I had a fun idea for one of your videos, that would also help your friend. Because it was a Dream, I am going to say it exactly as I dreamed it, which involved a promotion of my own work - but it's just a dream! If I didn't dream it, I would never say it, but I'm just going to be true to the dream. So, on my website if a free book for How To Make Your Own Medicine; I told you about it, and thought it would make a fun episode if *you* showed everyone how to make their own medicine, so they didn't get anxious at night, or whatever personal issues someone had. You might say: "This idea comes from one of my Patreons" and your video showed my website, and the Medicine Book, and then you launched into the How To Make it part! First you showed everyone how to collect their own Plants or Flowers by going for a walk, and finding one Plant/Flower that represents The Universal Mother, or their own, and then (usually a Tree) that represents The Universal Father - or their own. (Also self-flora) Even in dreams I am very sensible and cautious, so I also mentioned the importance of being careful about toxic plants; if you are not sure if a plant is toxic, do not put it directly in the water, just put it in a clear glass jar, in the middle of the water, so the sun can still activate the water with the plant magic. โœจ So, once you gather all the plant material, then your next idea was to somehow paint or stencil your flora collection onto a glass bottle, and set it in the oven? I don't know how to do this - it was just in the dream. Your idea. So you decorate the bottle your personal Medicine is going in. Then add embellishments, like gold-leaf pollen after the firing. You also made a very cute "Origami Book" to go with the Medicine Bottle. It had (same?) Flora stencils around the book cover, so it matched the bottle. It was Tea-Stained and Aged. Inside, you wrote down information about the Flora; for example, the name of the flower, with a picture (or even a pressed version of the flower?) and three words that described it, like "Bright"... or even a small paragraph of why you chose that flower. All in Lovely handwriting, of course. Anyway, as usual, your creations were gorgeous; a hand-decorated Bottle of your Own Nature Medicine, with a Matching Booklet. There was also a vague "ET phone home" moment upstairs, but the dream is fading! Somehow, your Mansion was actually in my city of Melbourne, and it was actually an Estate, that took up Blocks! There was a Spotlight/Searchlight on an aerial map, trying to find the boundary of your Estate. ...and I just remembered the name of the fluffy black in real life; it was *so* nice to see her, again... I think Souls of Cats must choose to be with Christine McConnell for all eternity. She really wanted to be introduced! ๐Ÿพ I'm also not editing out any grammar-errors, because it's Mercury Retrograde, and if I press something wrong, my entire message might go *poof!*, so I am copy/pasting the whole time, too! (And it did, and I am SO Lucky to be able to just paste! Hate losing everything I just wrote!) BTW... the short-hair silver-tabby is also Dearly Departed. She was a girl from my Life, too; I honestly think these are likely the most forgotten feline-friends having had some unsentimental humans to depend on. How Sweet that at least in Dreams you will probably welcome them in; since you Love the otherside! ๐Ÿพ

Mardi Shakti

Recovering antique lampshades is a craft I want to learn! I was going to recommend Ace of Shades on Instagram but I see that you are already following her!

Lynnetta

Love this!!!! And you've got such a beautiful new logo. I'd love to see that be used in the videos. It's truly gorgeous and such a stunning design. <3

Amanda Williams

Yay, this was SUCH a fun episode! I loved the spider and flower embellishments SO much, as well as the colours you chose โœจ๐Ÿ˜Š I have an old lamp that I'm thinking needs a bit of a makeover now ๐Ÿ˜‰

Samantha DeJong

inge hakim

FINALLY found the time to watch this one and I love it! Iโ€™m obsessed!

Hope M

I have watched this episode 3 times already. I Love it. Its make me want to make a lampshade. I just need to decide where it will go when its done. Thanks for some of the lampshade frame links in the comments. Christine where do you find your lovely nail polish colours? They give me total Nanna vibes which I mean as a complement. Xxx

Gregg Clark

It was everything I was imagining. You are a great artist. Thank you so much.

Vicky

Your work is absolutely jaw-dropping. I am so glad you make it a goal to show what you can do because it gives me life, it gives me hope!

Cesar

Have you seen this sketch on YouTube? โ€œWhat If the Golden Girls Were Latinaโ€. It was cute. https://youtu.be/eflTEJwPlVU

WaterNai

I finally subscribed! I feel like I've been watching you for years and I finally just couldn't resist the urge to see more of your amazing videos. You're such a talent, and this lamp shale is beeaaauuutiful! So excited to see what's next <3

Siri Boyd

What did you use to wrap the actual frame? Was it bias tape?

Renee Anderson

Wow, that is amazing, I loved seeing this come together!

Suzanne Robinson

Stunning! Iโ€™ve actually found quite a bit of sites that sell lamp shade reproduction frames. Of course they arenโ€™t old and antique. However they are exact replicas, and they are not terribly expensive. Iโ€™ve been making them for a while now. Because I loved your lamps so much I wanted to make them for myself. You are honestly so talented in everything that you do.

Cora Kathlea

It's an older episode, from March of 2 (or 3?) years ago. you can look on the list of episode links, or just scroll all the way down. Just FYI all the episodes should be available to you/all patreon subs. The top teirs are the people who get mailed X-mas cards, extra goodies, and have access to pattern downloads etc.

June Yorke

https://youtu.be/LfdNLYqQ6LQ Here ya go!

Leslie Langenegger

Became a Patreon because Iโ€™m dying to see how to transfer the makeup. But canโ€™t find it. Is it only for higher tiers?

Franchely

It reminds me of lingerie, very elegant and beautiful, she needs to do a line with Dita Von Teese.

RieRie Girl

homemakingheaven.co.uk has some good ones

Malaika

I found some on Etsy by searching "1920s lampshade." A shop on there called MaryMaxwellDesigns seems to have quite a few that are just the frames, but they are pretty expensive.

Gabryel Sohlรฉ

Does anyone know any good search terms for these types of frames? I'm struggling to find them here in the UK.

Rebecca Hatch

Stunning

Erin Street

That last bit is oh-so-important, because without specification... hoo-boy!

Nora Dallaire

I love this- I mean, wow! My favourite is the rusching- no wait, it's the diamond cut out- no wait it's the diamond netting- no wait it's the way the diamond netting behind the spider is almost invisible with the light off, but vaguely reminiscent of a spider-web when it's on- No wait my favourite is the pets. :D When I was little I used to say I wanted to grow up to be a spinster. "That's... not a job, Nora" my sister would say. I do have kids now, but one day they'll be gone, and then- then it's Animal Time! I currently have a dog and two rats, and oh gosh, the rats chase all the embroidery floss and crochet cotton all over. They're like kittens with a ball of yarn.

Nora Dallaire

OH MY GOODNESS!!! You REALLY gave that lamp shade a WHOLE NEW LIFE!!! STUNNING!!!!

Allyson Galpin-Hernandez

What a beautiful dress! It reminds me a little of a Vera Wang gown worn to a Met ball, the pattern/colors, anyway.

miz vitko

That lampshade looks like a French negligee, in the best possible way. Lovely!

Amy Mullen

Such an inspiration to re do , and make it your own

Page Galloway

โค Now I'm looking for Victorian Lamp Shade bones...

Magdalena Mojica

That iridescent blue spider and lace details against the dusky pink is just ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Coco Macabre

Gothically gorgeous as always. Great work, Christine!

Gabryel Sohlรฉ

I think all her work is museum quality, so we agree! Also, can't you imagine her as a conservator, fixing paintings and fabric items like clothing and antique furniture, so precisely and perfectly?

miz vitko

I'm sorry, not the last video, but I think she mentioned it in this one: Easter Egg Craft Along!! 3:00 PM EST

Wendy Litteral

I don't know if this is super helpful, but I believe in the last video she said there were some hold ups, stuff wasn't made right or something and had to be redone. I beeeelieve she said they were going out soon? I'm sure if you skim the last video you'll find it.

Wendy Litteral

Sara Cunningham

I assume an algorithm-based choice was made to refer to the trim as "piping" but if anyone is looking for the braid she uses, it's called "gimp." Add "upholstery" or "braid" to make sure your search results stay on track!

Ulla Umlaut

I watched it all but how? It's museum quality!

Trudy Simas

Oh my gosh you are so right! It is not a small project. I guess I just mean in terms of it being something that I feel like I could tackle a portion of. Designing wallpaper and redoing entire rooms is beyond my scope. ๐Ÿ˜€

amber putsey

I love lamp! Heh

Spin

Oops, no more crummy lampshades at my house!

Welikemeatloaf

Jennifer Edwards

Wow! Iโ€™m so in love with this lampshade that i would marry it if i could. So blown away. Also quick question, when sewing the fabric panels on did you sew around the wire with your needle or just onto the binding tape? Thanks and keep well!

Rebecca Kettle

Obsessed! xo

Bryce

This lamp was stunning ๐Ÿ’•

Amanda Smith

She makes it look like a smaller project, but I don't think it really is, unless you're referring to size! I can't believe her hand isn't in a splint!

miz vitko

Love this lampshade so much !! Perfect start to my morning

Leah Davies

Love love love your estetic and skillset. So impressive. Although I do appreciate the minimalistic Scandinavian retro style, as the Swede that I am, it lives a little Victorian Gothic historical girl inside. Thank you for sharing all your talent. Best wishes from Sweden.

Malin Gustafsson

I love the way it turned out, planning my next project.

Wanda Jones

Always always so lovely. Plus the rain and the copious amounts of kitty and puppy love?? Just sends my haunted little soul to a good place. And I โ€˜Ooooo!!โ€™d out loud when you first held up the wedding lace to shade.

If you can't find antique lampshade frame (which seems to be impossible at least in Holland), you can buy lampshade frames from this Etsy story in France: https://www.etsy.com/nl/shop/ABATJOURVICTORIA?ref=usf_2020 If anyone has other places in the EU, please feel free to comment!

Malaika

They sell really great victorian lampshade frames in the US. I think it's Arowire or something

Malaika

If we want to create our own lamp shade frame. First, is that possible? Second, what could we use to create it? Some kind of sturdy metal that's bendable?

Danielle Gutierrez

Deborah Wiltshire Whaley

Ahhhh Iโ€™ve been waiting for this one!!! I immediately turned off the Depp trail to watch it ๐Ÿคฉ

Spectacular is the only word that comes to mind! I want to live in that fringe ๐Ÿคฃ. Sending everyone hugs, love & prayers for a wonderful & blessed weekend ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป!

Rebecca Ude

Wow, these lampshades look so so beautiful!! Another important note about choosing to do something and dying it afterwards: always use the matching thread, i.e. silk thread for silk fabric. That's the highest chance to make them not pop out after dying. Most of the time, even if you have a cotton dress the thread will be polyester usually so keep that in mind to prevent major dyeing drama

Alice

Your dress is absolutely gorgeous in this one!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’œ

Danielle Gutierrez

Perfect day today! 2 episodes! And it's a cloudy rainy day๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฆ‡

Danielle Gutierrez
