The Dress Form : Episode 1 - From the Mind of Christine McConnell
Added 2021-06-25 14:57:43 +0000 UTC
Hello!
If you tackle this project before the next episode, hold on to your shavings :D I have the most fun idea of how I'm finishing this, but it's going to take me some time, so the next episode should be coming in late July
Hope you love this and I'll see you soon!
-Christine
This is so cool, it's like a a craving in sandstone but also has the texture of a wasp nest

Anyone tackling this project might want to add in a traced profile silhouette on flat cardboard in addition to the main tracing. Keep that taped on the wall, check your dress form shaping against the side profile as you go. Doesn't replace actual measurements towards the end, but could help in those early stages as you try to get the overall shape how you want. Especially the more 3D areas.

wouldn’t it be fun to do a spooky stained glass project! Fun recipe segment could be Victorian milk punch to serve at your holiday parties. Victorian hair art…

Hello Christine, I know your wrist gives you a lot of problems. Maybe invest in a good wrist support and utilize it when doing these very repetitive movements. Hoping it can help. Catching up on your videos in anticipation of the coming holidays! Thank you for all you do!

You should get an electric carving knife! It makes a world of a difference for cutting cardboard. Especially for curves and corners.
I was killing my hand with scissors for the longest time, and using a the electric carving knife cuts down the cutting time significantly .

I wear those sizes as well. I wondered if in our cases if it would be beneficial to enlist help to do a mold of our own bodies, and then use a spray foam of some sort so it wouldnt be extremely heavy, but sturdy. Then from there add a protective layer of some sort.

Wowzers AMAZEBALLS! This looks complicated but I think probably with a dremel tool all things are possible. I wonder how many RPM's was your dremel/router tool? I would hate to burn out a dremel. LOL I can't wait to see the following episodes. The most complicated bits might be getting the Silhouette done if you are Sola Chola or just prefer working without relying on others?

A quick suggestion for people doing this on the cheap- I know Ottawa has a "Tool Library" where you can rent tools, power and otherwise, and it's phenomenal. You can borrow such specific tools for just a weekend, a week, whatever. I'm sure the same kind of programs must exist in other big cities, right? It could be cool to look into in people's area!

I actually think the "in steps" aspect of this project makes it a lot more manageable and practical than other DIY dress form methods I've seen. Not that those aren't great too but it seems easier to get something more anatomically accurate to take it slowly and build up/carve away rather than rely on a perfect mold and pour or duct tape from getting wonky. I also like that I can cut the pieces out then have them sitting there as motivation to finally buy a Dremel tool X'D

Oh my God - why did I think this was going to be a simplified silhouette for the dress form -- it is Christine! haha I love it!!! I do not feel so confident about my hand/sand sculpting abilities...Surely I am not the only designer here - does a rhino 3d model made into contour or waffle structure seem less full of deformities for those of us with less skill or...confidence? lol
I am so excited to see this finished -- BRAVO!

Would standing with legs slightly apart affect it dramatically, I'd like to be able to use it for pants and dresses/ skirts. Maybe I can add some sort of hinge to open and close legs. Look at me over here complicating it lol.

The form looks absolutely incredible so far. I'm really curious to know how easily you can pin into it with all those layers of glue and cardboard. I've made dress forms out of other things before, but this one really does seem like it would last forever!
Can't wait to see how you finish it!

This is so incredible! I don't sew (though it's on my ever growing list of things I want to learn), and watching you carve that cardboard had my brain thinking of all the things that could be sculpted from this cheap and abundant (except in the UK according to another patron comment) material!

Call it "Dismembered Christine"! It's a cardboard masterpiece! I was also really excited to see your grandfather clock after the Clock Goblin fixed it! (And what kind of faux candles are those in the candelabra? They are beautiful.)

WOW absolutely amazing!
I don't think I'll be tackling this project 😂😂😂 I wear a size 18/20 with a very generous posterior(major booty) my hips are 55inches I don't think there is enough cardboard in the world LOL jk but no. Awesome how it all comes together.💜

Welllllll that's a good way of doing it. Cheap and time consuming... Definitely 😂
Looks so good, i lie the cardboard waves and grain but ooo very much excite to see I finished and spooky
Will I do it myself? I'm not sure of any time soon but it seems doable! And would be totally exact.... Id deffos make it bigger coz I'm forever going up and down half a stone so I'd make it bigger.
Also fun fact... The uk has a cardboard shortage! How mad is that!
