Interesting to consider it in terms of the environment. But I see it as a mistake of ignorance on the part of manufacturers to apply the sRGB curve when using sRGB primaries. That's not how monitors have traditionally behaved and it just makes the image look washed out. I very much doubt they are doing this to combat black crush, but just because they see they both say "sRGB" and think it's correct, sensible behavior. I would rather deal with some small expected level of black crush caused by ambient conditions than the washed out sRGB curve.
Of course my rant is largely a tangent to the article but in effect: lifted blacks are also bad. Hard to look at anything in isolation.
