Gigabyte MO27Q28G Review

Gigabyte MO27Q28G Review

Comments

Yes the HyperNits feature is just a tweaked HDR mode for enhancing brightness. We’ve not had chance to test this yet beyond just the demos at CES which looked decent. Gigabyte told us it should be rolled out to some other recent screens via a FW update at some point and I’d sad the original model is a dead cert given it’s the same software as the R model. I’m not expecting any other differences between the matte and glossy versions beyond the costing and associated visual differences really, other than that added new HDR feature for now

TFTCentral

Hey, do you think that the Mo27q28g will get a firmware update that adds the hypernits Feature from the Mo27q28gr when it is released? Also do you think that the newer GR model will have other improvements despite being the same panel with different coating? I am still in the return window of my mo27q28g, and I fear that the GR model could be the better choice because of possible updates and the hypernits feature. (Btw is the hypernits feature just extra tonemapping?)

The HDR certification may only show in certain modes but I haven’t really looked in to it. I don’t put much stock in the strange behaviour of windows with HDR. it won’t matter in any real HDR content and usage anyway I’m sure Not sure why that OLED care setting has been greyed out, I think they changed that a while back but not sure why

TFTCentral

Do you have any info why the monitor is not reporting HDR information correctly to Windows 11? it just shows HDR Certification: Not found. Noticed as well with Firmware F06 Oled Care -> Static Control is greyed out, do you happen to have any info if Gigabyte is aware of this? I assume it's bug with firmware.

sorry for the slow reply over the Christmas period. The banding issue varies from sample to sample and it seems to perhaps be a bit more pronounced/common on the latest 4th Gen WOLED panels. Panel refreshes can help a bit, but won't eliminate it fully in some cases. It's not likely to be noticeable in a lot of content, but any darker games, or on some app dark themes (e.g. Chrome) may show it more

TFTCentral

I have a quick question regarding gray banding on this 4th Gen W-OLED monitors. Is gray banding considered a major issue in practice, or is it something that most OLED panels are affected by to some extent due to the technology itself? Additionally, are there any recommended measures to reduce or mitigate gray banding (e.g. panel refresh, break-in period, settings), or is it largely panel-dependent? Thank you in advance for your clarification. Best regards

Nil

I think you're describing the "black crush" and some loss of shadow detail which impacts some modes at the moment (Gigabyte investigating). You can improve things quite a bit in SDR mode by using either the sRGB or DCI-P3 emulation modes, depending on your preferences around colour saturation/vividness. Both offer better shadow detail than the native mode at the moment. You can also make some further tweaks using the Shadow Detail control which helps quite nicely too on this screen.

TFTCentral

Using this OLED now for 1 week. I thought one advantage of that of monitor is the great blacks. However, I recognize a lot of problems in darker games (e.g. tainted grail) where I see a lot of big color blocksin darker environmen t rather a smooth color gradient. It is really disturbing the game feeling. Some report this problem related to low source content (e.g. youtube), but I see less information from people having this issue in games. If I reduce color scale from 10 to 8 bpc it is getting better. But result would be less color in SDR content? Do you have any experience or tips for me? Is it normal? Any way to reduce this effect?

Marlus

It’s not possible to calibrate HDR mode in the same way unfortunately so the calibrated profile is only for SDR. Not sure what the manuf profiles are designed to do tbh, not very much would be my guess

TFTCentral

Hey, is the the ICC profile at our site for SDR only or could also be used for HDR profile? If I install monitor driver from gigabyte, there is also an ICC file included. Should I use this one? Thanks!

Marlus

go with 29 for closest match to 120 nits if that's your target, but you can really set brightness at whatever you find comfortable for your viewing conditions

TFTCentral

In the video, a brightness level of 29 is mentioned, while the database lists 31 for 120 nits. Which value is correct?

Nil

That's really odd, we've not had any other users report this issue. But to get around it, I've attached the ICC profile to this post as well for you :)

TFTCentral

Hey, I'm trying to download the ICC profile for this, but whenever I login with Patreon on the website, the entire website breaks and every page (even non-database) will give WordPress Error 500 - You do not have permission to preview snippets. This stays until I manually clear cookies. I tried different browsers and devices, same issue.

Shiloh

It should be listed in the welcome email you receive after joining, but just follow the steps here (step 3 specifically) https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc-profiles-and-monitor-calibration-settings-database

TFTCentral

where is the icc profile? i have a membership and i can't see icc profile for this monitor

Peter Molnar

What configuration are you using at the moment? Have you got windows HDR enabled or disabled? What APL stabilize setting are you using? Have you used the recommended settings from our best settings video guide? And does this test look the same on different browsers? I’m always a bit cautious about browser / web based tests for evaluating things like this as there’s a load of different variables that could be impacting the results I suppose most importantly, do you see any issues with this in your actual real world content and usage?

TFTCentral

I tried anything i could (including the TFT icc profile) and i can't get rid of white crush. Can anyone, with any settings, see all the squares in this test, starting from 0, which I can see on an ancient IPS Dell monitor: https://testufo.com/whitelevels

Andrei Răducanu

Does it help? If so then it could be ok, if it doesn’t make the image look bad in any other ways. Not something we’ve experimented with tbh

TFTCentral

Is turning gamma to off on native to help with black crush an alright thing to do?

William

you can set brightness in SDR to whatever you find comfortable and appropriate for your viewing environment and preferences. It won't impact any other aspect of the calibration/setup :)

TFTCentral

Thank you for providing ICC profile and recommended settings. I'll be using this screen predominantly in a dark environment. Is the brightness at 31 still necessary? Or is there lower value that I could set to?

kanade_

Hi, yes we received this firmware a few days ago and were told it is designed to fix the Peak 1500 mode, to make it behave the same as the Game mode. We've not had chance to test it yet, but will try to soon. They're still investigating our feedback around black crush and loss of shadow detail in certain SDR modes too

TFTCentral

Hi, Gigabyte released a new F06 firmware, if you have the time could you please try again the Peak1500 mode? They optimized the EOTF apparently.

Advanced Gaming

Hi Chris. It's probably best to follow our best settings guidance video here: https://youtu.be/ojGYClAHpZE If you're using the ICC profile we've provided then that will apply in SDR mode and should be used alongside the Custom > Native colour space option and the RGB adjustments we discuss in the video

TFTCentral

Hi! Could you post here the best settings for each mode and how do I use the Color Profile you guys have on your site? Thank you!

Chris James

I believe the Peak 1500 mode will report that higher figure to windows so you could use that if you need to use NVIDIA RTX HDR or Windows Auto HDR and the other modes are confusing things

TFTCentral

I'm a bit confused what to set the peak brightness to in HDR gaming. The monitor does 1500 nits but it only reports 550 nits to windows. 🤔

Advanced Gaming

Anti-flicker should be in that standard firmware....it was on ours. It's in the same menu as adaptive-sync, options on/off/anti-flicker....the updated FW addresses some issues with HDR performance and brightness in the APL stabilize high modes, and should be available in the near future.

TFTCentral

Hello! Where can I find the firmware? I received this monitor with F02 firmware, in which some functions are not available, for example, anti-flicker
