buckets, romance, honest booktok-ing, and horror movies

A chatty one in which I stubbornly pronounce “valet” the British way and “sommelier” the French-adjacent way. I also invoke something called Die Hard (Hans Gruber’s version).

I can't believe I missed this! I only got into romance in the last year and have struggled with finding a lot of them a bit twee. They can kind of give me the same feeling reading an in depth description of the traffic light system in fan fic does. Very important irl to establish consent but very unerotic to read. Verily Bitchie gets at it a lot in her critique of "good" lgbt representation and Heartstopper. I'll relate more to any queer coded villain than I will to wholesome queer role models. It's also why I can get much more hooked on romantic pairings in other genres than in romances themselves, there's more focus on writing real characters. I read the Captive Prince trilogy after listening to your video on it and really loved it. I think perfect characters falling for each other is very meaningless, it's much more romantic to find beauty in ugliness. It's funny you mention Christian because he revisited the very bad "book tok" take the other day. I just don't get it, it's such a mean spirited dismissive streak in an otherwise great channel. Babbity Kate is one of the best on Tik Tok, there's something so endearing about her depth of knowledge for what she loves. CJ the X has been one of my favourite new creators too, the Folgers video is one of YouTubes all time greats. Yhara just released a really interesting video on Blink Twice. The timing of the movie with the current trial in France all over tik tok is quite haunting but I'm not sure if the end would sour it for me.

As always, loved listening to this. I hollered when you mentioned severance adjacent to the work bucket because I too felt the adjacency but wasn’t sure how to verbalize it! Validating to know I was not alone. I really enjoyed the way you articulated “things happen and then there are consequences” because you are so right that it doesn’t feel like a big ask? And yet. Here we are where things don’t happen. This idea that enjoying fiction where a character acts in an imperfect, human way means that you are endorsing that IRL and not just enjoying witnessing people be in a situation that’s charged or complex or whatever seems to be making an impact on romance for sure, and in some other recent releases I’ve seen. Let characters be! Complicated! Okay lastly just want to validate that your work situation sounds really tough. It sounds so draining and stressful to deal with, and I hope that it gets better!

Also thank you as always for every single word ✌️

I’m seeing that moral anxiety relating to consent & behavior in the copious amounts of Heartstopper fanfic I’m reading & it is precious, it is sweet, a lot of what We like abt HS are those things but like, let these passionate boys be messy & grow from things PLEASE.

Jilly Panilly

I read HDM books as an adult & was completely energized by them but I have some mixed feelings & downright grief relating to the new trilogy.

Also wrt to fucked up relationships: has someone recommended the locked tomb to you today

A delight as always! I’m a horror movie person so I really enjoyed that section of this video. Bodies x3 has become one of my favorite movies. It does such a good job of capturing the EXACT vibe of when a party you’re at starts to go wrong, except here instead of like, someone’s ex showing up, someone dies

Bailey

I really enjoyed the vibe of the video (and excellent cowboy costume), and also really hope it’s allowing you a bit a chance for a breather! Your bit about virality vs cultivation was reassuring. In thinking about ever making content, the tension has always between wanting to go viral because that is what you’re supposed to want but also desperately not wanting that because absolutely fuck that yaknow. The slow work of audience cultivation sounds like a good goal

h

EXACTLY!!!! you understand my struggle, trying to ration them out! "Things are always happening!" Is that really so much to ask?! 😩

Mel Thomas

KJ Charles' back catalog has been my romance refuge this year and it's been delightful. things are always happening! no repetitive inner monologues, no minor inconveniences masquerading as conflict, and great attention to historical detail and context. it's gonna be bleak when i run out of books.

alliwag

I actually finished I'll have what he's having the other day and yeah it was kinda a slog😅😅 I think khorram is so interested in the interior thoughts and feelings of his characters that he forgets to actually put them in situations? So I found myself really liking david and farzan but then the novel was basically just them being stressed about work for 350 pages which is not exactly gripping

Rhys Tunley

I too love Arthurian Shit and would be very interested in a video from you in the future on some aspect of this that interests you. Retellings that work and don't? What parts of the myths are the most central? Why fantasy readers in the US fall for this extremely British story cycle and imprint on it (even when it's completely outside our realm of references)? or anything else really! I enjoyed this chatty vlog very much and shall now go investigate all of the youtubers you mentioned.

Maia Kobabe

big agree re: Sanj, every video I'm like: yeah I'll get weirdly and unexpectedly invested in that. man, also, was just thinking the other day about how crucial it is that characters suck. or at least majorly fuck up one or more times. this is why I love Austen! the growth, the missteps, the regret, the patching up! lot of intimacy in repair, turns out.

Claire

No you're TOTALLY right about character arcs. Almost like if a person isn't already their best self at the beginning of the story they don't deserve romantic love. Boo tomato tomato

Mel Thomas

I agree about the state of romance, i get the feeling it's related to the tendency of (especially tiktok commentary) to treat all art as if we're evluating how good any character is as a person, and not on how interesting they are as a character. i also get a feeling a lot of people don't understand what a character arc is anymore, but that's a separate rant of mine (or bucket, i suppose).

Evie

makes sense!

breigh

I did not! I wanted to, but I had to cut scope. (Also I've had a really hard time sitting though TV shows lately, even very good ones)

Mel Thomas

speaking of severance by ling ma, did you watch the (unrelated) severance tv show apple tv? it explores corporate work stuff in way that's pretty relevant to your youtube video!

breigh

"We used to be a proper country. We used to put Glenn Close in movies." yesssss!

scarr

I should have DNFed I’ll Have What He’s Having. I don’t love the mistaken identity trope, so I didn’t mind that but being wrapped up quickly (although I do think you’re right about it not being very interesting), but the rest of the novel was just so precious and insisted on holding my hand through everything that it felt like all the worst tendencies of YA and none of the stuff I often love about it.

Emmett Altsman

clowning is a rich art!

mall0rie666

SO relieved to not be alone in feeling this way, honestly

Mel Thomas

Please, take a well-deserved break! We love you, and we want you to relax.

KrustyFrank27

This x a million on the topic of sanitized romance. I was on an award committee for a bit that covered a bunch of genres and some members would try to nix anything in romance where the characters didn't behave perfectly all the time and therefore they only wanted to push forward the most boring books and it made me CRAZY. (It was also only for romance, which was so baffling to me and maybe reflected their own feelings about self-insertion in romance vs other genres.)

Stephanie H

thanks buddy, this is definitely a chattier one! i am tired 😅

Mel Thomas

I learned from Downton Abbey!

Mel Thomas

Damn dude, an 80-minute video AND a Patreon exclusive in the same week? You’re way too kind to us!

KrustyFrank27

I've never heard someone say valet that way I have to say (from the UK ha ha ha) but pronunciation is more about confidence than correctness anyway I'm fairly sure
