Chapter 246: The Mirror Spirit
Added 2025-02-05 14:06:01 +0000 UTCPreviously, Charlot Mecklenburg had made the mistake of notifying everyone he knew simultaneously. This time, he wouldn't repeat such a folly. On the first day, he only informed Annie Bretagne, allowing them to enjoy a warm afternoon together on the terrace of 58 Elysée Avenue. They sipped coffee, played with clever cat kittens, and admired the scenery along the Lukavaro River.
Across the Lukavaro River was Charlot's jurisdiction. He was not only the Chief Overseer of the Lukavaro District patrol guards but also the director of the Administrative Bureau for the district, as well as the owner of both No. 1 and No. 2 Falcon Street.
However, the third-floor terrace of 58 Elysée Avenue was not tall enough to offer a view of No. 1 Falcon Street.
Although the two young people did nothing but chat idly, sharing heartfelt stories about their time apart, Charlot still felt contentment and joy.
Spending time with the girl he cherished, on his own terrace, with a scenic view and three adorable clever cat kittens frolicking about, indeed brought a subtle sense of happiness that lingered in the air.
After all, isn’t this fleeting moment of leisure what many people toil so hard to achieve?
If such carefree tranquility could be enjoyed all the time, without the burdens of life, there would be no need to struggle so much.
Yet, this world demands beasts of burden far more than it needs people capable of perceiving happiness.
Thus, some continually push the world towards chaos.
Charlot had never imagined that he, a mere mathematics teacher, would transmigrate to another world. Nor had he thought that, as a civil servant, he would lead troops. Yet in less than a year, he had been forged by the battlefield into a seasoned "veteran."
...
After sending Annie Bretagne off, Charlot continued his daily routine of practicing Blood Glory. Once he completed his training, he sought out a mirror.
When he infused the nine swirling vortices of Blood Glory into his eyes and gazed into a mirror in the hall, a "Charlot" appeared in the reflection. Though this mirror version of himself mimicked his posture, an indescribable sinister smile played on its face.
Charlot smiled faintly and murmured, "So, this is the Mirror Spirit?"
The Infinite Mirror World of the Van Gogh Clan was an exceedingly eerie supernatural ability.
Anyone from the Van Gogh Clan who trained in the Infinite Mirror World was forbidden from looking into mirrors in their daily lives. The reason was simple: the moment they gazed into a mirror, a Mirror Spirit would be born.
The Mirror Spirit could only exist within the mirror, but within that world, it possessed all the abilities of its original. To control a mirror, the clan member had to kill the Mirror Spirit.
The more Mirror Spirits killed, the more mirrors they could control, strengthening the Infinite Mirror World until it eventually evolved into a fully-fledged mirrored world.
...
Charlot raised an eyebrow; the Mirror Spirit mirrored the action.
Charlot picked his nose; the Mirror Spirit followed suit.
Charlot struck a seductive pose; the Mirror Spirit mimicked it precisely.
Finally, Charlot reached for a Knight’s Lance, and the Mirror Spirit also grabbed one.
Charlot then discarded the ordinary Knight’s Lance and replaced it with the Berserker Blade.
The Mirror Spirit's expression shifted drastically.
Mirror Spirits could replicate their original’s abilities since those powers were derived directly from the original. However, they could not replicate artifacts, not even ordinary enchanted replicas.
Charlot burst into laughter and strode into the mirror world with the Berserker Blade in hand.
The mirrored world was exceedingly small, limited to a part of 58 Elysée Avenue, as the mirror could only reflect portions of the residence.
With his Knight’s Lance pointed forward, Charlot advanced. The Mirror Spirit mirrored the movement, assuming the exact same posture and unleashing a charge with Heaven’s Wing Spear Technique.
When the two Knight’s Lances clashed, the Berserker Blade emitted a faint blood-red aura, shattering the Mirror Spirit’s lance.
The anti-magic property of the Berserker Blade came into play. Being a malevolent entity, the Mirror Spirit's lance, conjured from corrupt energy, was countered and destroyed.
With a swift thrust, Charlot skewered the Mirror Spirit onto his lance. Grasping its head with his free hand, he casually twisted it.
The Mirror Spirit dissolved into wisps of black smoke and vanished.
Standing still for a moment, Charlot sensed that he had taken control of this small mirrored world.
Charlot lingered briefly in the mirrored world before laughing and remarking, "Interesting!"
"Though it’s too much trouble."
Exiting the mirrored world, he began pacing around the house with the mirror in hand.
Mrs. Nancy and Madam Umeboshi, along with the clever cat kittens, watched their master curiously but refrained from disturbing him. Both women were well-trained housekeepers who knew better than to interfere with their master's eccentricities.
Charlot held the mirror high, reflecting the entirety of 58 Elysée Avenue, the nearby streets, the river, and the scenery from the terrace.
When he returned the mirror to its original position and re-entered the mirrored world, it had grown considerably larger. It now encompassed most of Elysée Avenue, a section of the Lukavaro River, numerous buildings, Mrs. Nancy, Madam Umeboshi, the kittens, and even distant passersby.
However, the mirrored buildings were inaccessible; the mirror could only capture their exteriors, not their interiors. The Lukavaro River was also shallow, appearing broad but not deep enough to submerge an ankle.
The mirrored figures were simplistic, performing only a few repetitive motions.
Initially amused, Charlot soon found the mirrored world dull.
Leaving the mirrored world, he mused, "This house only has one mirror. A world built on a single mirror is too fragile. I’ll need to gather more mirrors. But it’s late now, and the shops on Elysée Avenue have already closed. I’ll go tomorrow."
...
The next morning, Charlot had yet to ask Mrs. Nancy to notify Venie Arsenault, Sylvie Martin, or any of his other friends, nor had he gone out to purchase more mirrors, when a visitor arrived.
While enjoying breakfast prepared by Madam Umeboshi, he heard a knock at the door. He instructed Mrs. Nancy to answer it, and in walked a middle-aged gentleman he didn’t recognize.
The man was plainly dressed, with a stern visage, devoid of any ornamentation. Beside him stood someone Charlot did recognize—Sophia Gallanord.
It was then Charlot recalled that he had forgotten to ask Dolores Soumet about the Gallanord family’s situation.
