Atlas Concept Sketch

Ok I've held out on you long enough, here's a mostly completed Atlas concept. Lower legs and feet being the least retouched (since I started from an old piece done for The B33F).

There's so much art for the Atlas out there, and almost every one of them has something great about it, and also something derpy about it. There are many versions of specific areas like the cockpit that look great, so it's tough picking what is the best option at times.
I've also got to content with the fact that this mech feels really good retro and really cool modern, yet those two styles conflict heavily on a humanoid like this. I like the MWO version, and I also like the classic version.

What do you think?

What variant is this reflecting? Opinions on it: lower legs a bit bigger, and legs a bit closer together

Taylor Shead

Looks really nice overall. The feet feel just a little bit... stubby, I guess. Like the "toes" could extend just a *tiiiny* bit more out.

Well I don’t know where my previous comment went... but here goes again... it looks to me like this rendition of the Atlas is “a person made to look like a war machine” as opposed to “a war machine made to look like a person” - while I think the proportions similar to old-school TROs are super cool... it feels a little out of place with the rest of the mechs... I think it looks great, don’t get me wrong... it just doesn’t really feel like the embodiment of death, armor, and gunpowder... great work though! (the best thing about your work is that all of it is super easy to buy in to. “Yeah, that totally looks like a real piece of fighting technology that was designed by engineers and stuff”. You have hands down, my favorite renditions of almost every single chassis you have done - with very few exceptions)

I like what you have done with it excepting maybe the feet - maybe if they were just a touch larger or something...

Can't post pictures here, but Atlas from the introductory boxed set would be perfect. It fits your style and is really impressive https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91f-UnxAxCL._SX425_.jpg

I love it, but I think the legs need a bit more length. My big hate with the MWO atlas is the stubby feel it has to it. It feels squished down. This is better, but needs to feel taller.

Looks great, aside from some proportion issues

Joshua Bressel

The main thing that I don't care for is the hollow cavities around the eyes. Too big, or too prominent towards the bottom of the eye. Makes the Atlas look like it's just tired.

spot on. Reminds me of the old scaly atlas, still my favorite version. Looks like its proportions will make it stand out on the tabletop too.

David

This one is just excellent. Emphasizes all the wonderful stuff about the previous Atlas concept art while fixing some of the weird proportions of previous versions, *and* not leaning into the hunchback-type stuff of the games.

Robert Schuster

Love it . And I don't think the head is over sized it may not be sunken into the chest enough compared to its old art . Maybe a fat marauder 2 to go along with it ? And thank you for all you are doing , cant get enough of the new art for BattleTech .

Charles granger

Love it. Maybe if the lower legs were a skosh bigger, but even without, it's a great modernization of he original without overstylizing like he MWO version, etc. Even better no odd rotary barreled LB-10s, etc... ;)

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

That was exactly what I was going to say

The head feels mildly oversized, but I still love it!

Raymond White

Best one yet!

This monster of death is beautiful. Infinitely times better than the MWO'd Atlas. You are about to make CGL a boatload of money.

Andrew McKenna

Are we mecha, or are we dancers.

Anthony Scroggins

The feet will definitely change :)

Anthony Scroggins

Alex/FD and I both take a similar direction in modernizing the designs.

Anthony Scroggins

If forced to make the LRM show all 20 tubes I'd swap them, but as they are it matches the canon classic look

Anthony Scroggins

I feel like that's a big part of the atlas though. I like the MWO head too, but I can't copy it and going a similar route I think is a disservice to trying to make the old round skull work.

Anthony Scroggins

"Who you calling a big head?!"

Anthony Scroggins

That comes from the idea of designing these to look good as miniatures too without having to deviate from the art a lot. If the teeth are kept more flush, it'll vanish as the teeth details themselves are too small to cast well.

Anthony Scroggins

Do you mean the 5tube LRM, or how so many depictions split the LRM20 between both torsos? It's silly that the latter caught on with no canon loadout doing that. Hopefully no one above me will force a full 20 tubes.

Anthony Scroggins

Like the look of it so far. Weapons match the TRO description and the coolant port is nice and visible. The only issue I have is that the feet seem too small. Small feet make it look less like a brawler and more like a dancer.

In the original tech readout text, the designers could only fit 5 tubes, so they made a rapid loading system that could shoot an LRM 20 amount of ammo in roughly the same time

Looks great! Maybe make the 80’s shoulder pads a tad smaller and make the feet a bit larger to help support that big fella. Great work as always.

Richard Jensen

Where is LRM 20 launcher? I think torso is too low.

Michal Bernkopf

Everything you put out is well thought design. If I may, I'd suggest getting rid of the "hoove" toes, and make them as flat platform, like you've done on Awesome. This only detail bothers me. Maybe the head is too big, but only if we compare to MWO version. Can't wait for rendering)

Superb rendition of my all time favorite mech. You’ve done a wonderful job in fusing elements from the different designs. Maybe my only two comments of critique would be directed at the mouth and eyes. In my humble opinion the “teeth” of the MWO style Atlas was superb, emphasizing the skull head look. Also, I keep getting a sense that this Atlas wears glasses. I don’t know whether that makes sense though. In any case: GIMME!

Jakob Fredensborg

Retro but modern is a great way to put it. Generally not a fan of the dish beside the face usually, but on this I think it fits nicely.

Paul Mabbott

This Atlas looks superb!!! Such excellent sculpting...

Danny

The Godzilla of battlemechs! Well done sir. I especially like how you thickened it out and clearly and would I be correct in assuming you took a little inspiration from the MWO Atlas?

Tyler Erickson

I think the lore actually says it can and has picked up lighter mechs and smashed them around like rag dolls.

Tyler Erickson

I think it's my favorite Atlas rendition yet.

Damn. That’s a chonky boy! Also like that the missiles match the original TRO description:)

Absolutely stunning!

Steven Cross

That is amazing! My only issue is that the missile layout. I am not a fan of the 6 pack that high up on the chest and the LRM that low. Other than that it looks like the best Atlas yet!

Joseph Muniz Jr

Gimme gimme gimme ... I'm not too keen on the detail in the face. I know it should present a "skull-like" appearance, but I think this is not quite subtle enough. That said ... Gimme gimme gimme.

Joe M Emmert

Looks great! It seems a little squat, I feel like the legs need just a touch more length. Awesome looking though!

I like it - except the head - The MWO Atlas was on the money in the head department - I always thought the classic atlas heads looked derpy.

Stewart Spencer

I think you are on the right track, I love this! I think you really captured some of the main features that has made the Atlas one of the most feared mechs on the field, namely that big bore AC on the right and the iconic "Death's Head." My only critique is that it feels like the head is just slightly too big, maybe by 5%, it is almost going towards the old stand-by "Fat-las" from back in the early days of the miniature. This is a fantastic sketch though, well done! I'm so excited for the kickstarter coming up too!!!!

Tenouttaten.

That looks like a mech that and pick up a locust and smash another one with it. Solid on all fronts. That's an Atlas.

Jordan G Roberts

Overall awesome as usual, but I don't care for the mouth. The Atlas always had this classic skull face, but the recessed teeth on this one looks like it has lips.

capnbishop

I know we talked about it before a few months back, but thank fucking god you got the missiles right. That isn't a crack against you or that you were ever wrong since you knew what was up from the start. But three decades of it being wrong gets to you, you know? I dig the proportions. It isn't ridiculously tall, but has girth with the broad shoulders. EDIT: Only thing that doesn't work for me is the "X" in the armor panel on the right leg.
