Phoenix Hawk Feedback Please!

You think we're only working on Clan mechs over here? We haven't forgotten about those key classic redesigns. Something big is quickly coming together.

Now here I have a dilemma. The Phoenix Hawk has never been a mech I'm very invested in, other than its jump jet pods it kinda blends in with the rest of "that" family of mechs. I did give it a slightly departed look from the rest though. The others have a very mass production blocky look, while the Hawk gets a little more of a nimble look (at one point we considered going with curves).

Overall though I'm not that happy with this design, nor the sculpt, but I can't tell if it's because I don't enjoy the mech, or if I've done a bad job of it.

Please let me know what you all think of this version. I might run some tweaks on it if needed. Getting these right is a one-chance deal with how expensive production is.

I've always wanted a decent Pixiehawk - and this is the best so far - Not just a bigger valkyrie but still looks like a heavy recon mech. I love it. Actually don't mind the chunkiness - if it fits in with your mass calculations I'm all for it.

Would like to see a right hand holding that gun. And maybe slim down the waste. I want a fan of the head at first, but it’s grown on me. Thanks for sharing

Speaking of massive, any chance you'll go back to the unfinished Crusader design any time soon? It's one of the most common heavies since the Reunification War and it'd be awesome to see what you're doing with it.

Mitchell Berthelson

I agree with the others regarding the excess bulk in the render. It seems like we have a "camera adds 10 pounds" thing going on. Happened with the Ostscout sculpt too, where the legs were suddenly massive.

Mitchell Berthelson

As well as the Stinger, and Valkyrie models that were released, i feel like the render was squased a bit, making it feel wider than it should.

Raymond White

The only thing about the design is the lower legs in the render look out of place. They look too rounded compare to the rest of the mech. (and the lineart).

Heavyguard

Never been a big fan of it myself, just a uninteresting design I think. The only unique feature is the large jump jets on the back. The rest of it is pretty similar to other early medium designs, especially as unseens. The 3D render would probably look better with color and as a actual miniature, making the details standout.

Personally I love the big jet pack, it kinda makes sense, with internal volume at a premium in real life, you can put the thrusters, and all their associated systems together Otherwise, she's grand

The more I look at it the more I like it. The Head especially. The right arm, in my opinion, needs the most attention. The round barrel and 90 degree angle where the right hand should be just don't "flow" together. I feel like the barrel needs a (for lack of a better word) Forestock under it

Dexion (Shawn)

Perhaps the difference between your art and the sculpt is that it feels like the stomach area looks thinner than it does on the model.

I actually kind of like the PHawk model that is currently available from IWM. It's not as bad as the Hunchback but I think it is still hit with that anemic look. This might go to far in the opposite direction. I am not sure I like the hawk shaped head... But it definitely fits with the name of the mech better.

I don't think the chest needs to be so much smaller, but probably taller so that it overall doesn't feel as stocky. If the whole mechs gets taller including the legs, it'll look thinner.

Anthony Scroggins

I deliberately avoid orthographic angles because they don't convey a sense of proportions as you'll experience them in real life. So I prefer to show these types of angles where you "feel" it more. You are right about needing to lengthen the legs a bit.

Anthony Scroggins

It feels a bit to barrel-chested to me.

Thing is the lineart doesn't give any indication of depth at all. It starts to look a little weird if made too flat front to back. I think other proportion shifts can take the focus off that, like making it taller. Also it should be able to stand just fine on its feet. I little harder to balance on one foot, but we manage with human feet.

Anthony Scroggins

Brent Evans loves huge boosters lol. I tried for smaller at first.

Anthony Scroggins

I agree with what others are saying. Make the chest a tad smaller and make the arms and legs a bit thinner, more in line with the art.

I like this mech and it shows your style here. But I share your sentiment...the mech seems to me rather bulky in the torso and the legs. It reminds me of the unseen PHawk more than the reseen, which I really like. The reseen is more 'light' and seems more nimble. Something in this direction maybe?

Henning Boessler

Can we get a look at the sculpt straight on? It's hard to gauge proportions at an angle. Of those pictures, I think squaring off the upper legs and making them less round, and lengthening out the legs and slimming down the upper arms might help.

The chest is deeper in the 3d render than in the concept art causing a chain reaction and giving it an off-proportion look. I love the concept art proportions. Also, I feel you could do with a 3 toe approach (2 in the back and 1 in the front) cause I don't see how it could stay standing stationary. Sure, when it's running, it can use its acceleration to balance and 1 toe in the front means it can cut left and right quickly, but when its still, how does it balance its weight? Sure, I guess "technology magic" could be an excuse but if you can avoid that whenever possible, why not?

Maybe the jump boosters are too big

Andrew Bethards

Agreed, the art looks good, but the sculpt has too much bulk, makes the head look tiny

Andrew Bethards

I like the art but it could just be my eyes but the sculpt looks too bulky and the head looks too pointy but like I said crappy eyes on phone.

The shoulders look to big for the head, maybe it needs a bit more neck?
