AD-Free Episode 465 - Hypothetical Success and Concrete Failure

On this edition of the Arsenal Vision Post Match Podcast Elliot (@yankeegunner) is joined by Tim (@stillberto) and Paul (@poznaninmypants) to discuss Arsenal’s dismal failure in the second leg of the Europa League semifinal. The first section of the pod focuses more specifically on the game specifically, the individual performances, and the failures managerially. The second section after the break (45:00) is devoted entirely to assessing Arteta, whether there are remaining arguments for keeping him, making the case for moving on, and exploring why this seems to have failed. All that and more on this edition of the Arsenal Vision Post Match Podcast.

I do think the football is super boring and the very very deep passing is awful. Go get Potter??

Go to FBREF and look at xG difference p90 across the full league season. Top 4 is exactly what you would expect it to be. Then it's Brighton, then we are tied with Leicester. So we are exactly where we should be. Do I trust Arteta and Edu with the Summer? No.

I feel people Paul is overestimating how much we've improved since Christmas. We are still only sixth based on results since Boxing Day (35 points in 20 games) in a season where other teams have been hugely inconsistent. Isn't sixth the bottom we should be achieving with this squad? https://www.transfermarkt.com/premier-league/formtabelle/wettbewerb/GB1?saison_id=2020&min=15&max=35

Where to leave a review?

The current setup is the problem, not Arteta. If we think he has good understanding of footballing principles, then let him focus just on them. There was no need to make him a manager-it was a lazy way out of the situation by KSE. It is very likely that if he is sacked now, we will end up with one of Kia's clients as a manager. I would much rather keep Arteta and change the setup surrounding him. Hire someone, anyone, above Edu and make Edu do the managerial stuff. Keep Arteta on as a coach. Next year is unique because if Arteta has any semblance of a footballing philosophy, he will have a chance to instill it in the squad. We have already suffered through his learning curve, why fire him now when in the right circumstances, he can come good?

Are we going to talk about the elephant in the room or we are still gonna pretend and not back down from bad opinions? #BRINGBACKARSENEWENGER With the players we have, bring back Arsene Wenger and we would seriously challenge for the top 4. Sometimes I look at the teams Arsene took to the champions league and I think that man was probably the best manager in the world because it was a miracle he achieved the things he did with those teams

Taking social media as a barometer, Arteta has lost the fan base and the majority want him and Edu out of the club. In my opinion once you lose the fans, you quickly lose the players and they are dead men walking. He's finished so end it early and don't let him touch the rebuild.

La liga is not a good market for Arsenal, the big 3 rarely recruit from their leagues. We need to wise up, most of the La Liga recruitment has been unsuccessful in rating our talent floor. Theses loan players are not good enough we need to recruit players who can play in a flat 433. We need to learn that the attacking four has to take shots.

Please give me some good news.... Has Arteta been sacked yet? How can u blame the CBs for lack of creation when you have so many creative players ahead of them, they kept a clean sheet (job done) where were the goals?

Again with blame the centre backs. Honestly, it’s the tactics of Arteta that stunts our progression. As you said, when Pepe swapped wings, Mari found him. We have a fundamental problem with our attacking play and it’s down to the tactics, not holding and Mari, I do agree that luiz could have made a difference and that’s cos he does whatever HE wants. Great pod as usual boys

Sorry for not being with it but can you guys point me to the place to write a review? Cheers

Now, I'm not saying Elliot is a shit-awful attention-whoring hot-take-monger, but what would it look like if I were? 🤦‍♂️

Arteta is excellent at finding the problematic issues but has a hard time solving them. By the way, do you think that performance was indicative of Arteta losing the dressing room? Benching Auba seemed like a punishment in my opinion.

Taking off you best striker when you need a goal is just dumb. We need a change

I’ll take Arteta back in 10 to 15 years! But he has to go now.

How can Arteta understand football? The guy makes totally bone headed footballing decisions

Paul should take his "bits" somewhere else. The good bits were against shit competition.

The idiotic change from a double to a single pivot killed Arteta
