Premier League Roundup - Refereeing Edition

Elliot, Tim and Clive cover the ins and outs of the PL including Spurs being terrible, City being good, and who will make the top 6. Then there's a long debate over referees, VAR and personal responsibility for the bad behavior of others.

That’s brilliant- thanks

Totally agree

Great listen this pod! In the Netherlands you have refs directly after games taking in shows about how they came to decisions, explaining the rules to fans and admitting when they went wrong. As we notice how awful they feel themselves when they mess up, it creates massive respect for the work they are putting in, as we are starting to look at them like human beings who love football. So yes we should not focus to much on refs while analysing games but PL should bring officiating out of the shadows and make it part of the culture. Which may hurt at first but will create a much healthier situation long-term.

Perhaps the wording “clear and obvious error” is causing the var issue as it’s still open to interpretation.

You guys in the US - Am I right about Fox taking out news shows for more commentators that provide opinions not facts

Really good point about outspoken comment. That led into my fox and cnn comment. Reason I said that is I heard Fox for example have fired some factual news journalists to add more hot take comment shows. I think that tells you what both audiences want. Comment that’s hot and so one sided it doesn’t allow you to think about anything that could challenge your thinking

Terrific podcast. As someone who works in the media I’m totally with you on the over emphasis on the punditry of refereeing and decision making by the media. It’s a total bore and does nothing to promote the game. It also mirrors the societal shift towards outspoken comment in the name of click bait. That said i don’t agree with Clive’s analogy between Fox News and CNN at the end. They are as bad as each other but please let’s not go there!

Huw Bevan

I was thinking the same thing. Man that faceplant..

Clive, "Sanchez is literally Mustafi". And today, Sanchez with a spectacular Mustafi Carabao Cup Impression. AMAZING stuff Clive, spot on!

Thanks Nigel!

😂 love it

If this was a Spurs pod, you'd release a dvd of this podcast. Fantastic stuff.

I know - my bad 🤦‍♂️ 😂

Lady footballer! Love you Clive

Fantastic pod, brilliantly explained opinions by all, especially the last part about the refs & VAR. I've pledged to change my attitude towards them also, and view them as humans, doing a difficult job under trying conditions. Except for Mike Reilly that is ! Like clive i cannot get over that 50th game. And will never forgive him for that performance. 🤬 it was and will always be inexcusable.... Keep up the great work though, second to none. IMO.

Too kind! And agreed. Way too much content out there!

Love the discussion, learned that a while ago, that why you are one of the few podcast I listen, among Sea of arsenal podcasts, and while I only use Twitter, too much information scrambles my brain

Thanks Shay! All the nonmembers who snuck into the comments better sign up 😂

This podcast is always top standard but today the boys surpassed themselves!! 10/10 amazing chat! If you’ve not signed up then do it now!! Not that you can read this if you aren’t a member 😂

So true. And so hard to explain

Few minutes and and can’t agree with Clive more - the press for them are ridiculous, especially on NBC. Every time I open the NBC app to watch a game I see 4 sports pictures - 3 guys holding actual trophies, and then Kane just celebrating a goal. It irks me.
