2025-10-26 17:30:57 +0000 UTCOne more thing to just take note of- the hair pin that Maomao saw Jinshi wearing after she tasted the poison- she assumed that someone gave it to him, but we found out that it was his, and indicative of his “true status,” and can only be worn by “special individuals” according to Gaoshun- who we’ve learned has apparently watched over Jinshi his whole life

2025-10-26 10:59:07 +0000 UTCDespite, or probably because of where she grew up- in the pleasure district where “love” seems rare or nonexistent, and everything is “transactional,”Maomao is oblivious to “romance,” especially in regards to anything directed at her lol- so she has no idea about that meaning to the hairpins. There are multiple purposes, like recruiting- Lihua’s gift of a pin to her could just be gratitude for the way she took care of her, but it could also be viewed as Lihua trying to steal her away from Gyokuyou. Another meaning could be protection- like Gyokuyou’s gifts to her ladies to help present that they’re under her- and Jinshi’s pin could have this interpretation as well, she had just told him how she wears freckles to protect herself and was kidnapped despite that, so her wearing his pin could be a sign of her being under his protection as well. Of course, there can be romantic connotations to them as well- when she used Lihaku to go home, all of the other ladies were happy for her, congratulating her, asking how she met him, etc, because they assumed she was essentially leaving on a “date” with him- of course Gyokuyou and Hyongniang knew that Maomao was clueless. And at the end of episode 8, that wasn’t politics, it was that Gyokuyou now has a new favorite source of entertainment- witnessing Maomao and Jinshi misunderstandings/antics/etc (remember she took great joy in being the one to tell him that Maomao left with Lihaku, “I can’t wait to see the look on his face when I tell him” lol)
